      I tried to troubleshoot my PC when drunk once.
      The pins fell out of a molex connector, i put them back but got the 5V and 12V lines crossed...
      Impressively loud bang that shot the CD drive tray open and literally exploded the CDROM controller chip on the drive. (luckily no damage to the rest of the PC)
      Ever since i don't recommend PC troubleshooting + alcohol ;)

      Also unplug the power cord, leave it unplugged for a minute or two, then plug it back in and try again. I've found that worked when the PC has been dead after a power outage.
      It's always worth trying the simple, easy to do, things first.

    Actually, removing any peripherals beyond the essential is a must. On my first build, I had mistaken a Floppy drive plug for a fan one. Somehow it must have shorted something, and wouldn't even turn on. When I unpluged the fan, everything booted up fine. So unplug everything that's on ur mobo, except cpu power, mobo power and gpu.

      Ben C this depends entirely on the cpu. If you’ve got an iGPU (integrated gpu) in the cpu, you can use the DisplayPorts/HDMI-ports/vga whatever you have on your mobo to post and even boot. However if that works then most likely the gpu is at fault. Could also be the pcie lane

    I'll share a PC troubleshooting nightmare story. Long story short, motherboard w/ bad socket fried the CPU. Shortly after installing Windows, random BSODs would happen with different error codes. Swapped the motherboard not knowing that the CPU was already fried from the first one. Had to take it to a professional who diagnosed the bad socket on mobo #1 and that the CPU was now dead. It was a friends build that I helped put together and troubleshoot the issue. He ended up eating the cost of the diagnosis and dead CPU, BECAUSE HE THREW AWAY THE BOX RIGHT AFTER HE GOT THE THING! NEVER DO THIS! KEEP THAT SHIET FOR AT LEAST 30 DAYS! That's the moral :)

    I once had a PC (Back in the pentium 4 days) it wouldn't post as long as 1 specific USB port was in use...
    if i used other USB ports (or none) it was fine.. This meant, coz i used a USB mouse and not a PS/2, the troubleshooter in the store spend 3 weeks fixing it, coz he didn't use usb peripherals...
    eventually it the issue was found and i got a new mobo.
    Learning by failing, i guess. Just leaving that "tip" here. test things without having usb and other peripherals plugged in. then you can always plug them in, if it posts and see how/if that works

      To expand on your advice, I'd say it's a good idea to see test your PC with everything removed that can be removed. Remove Fans, graphics cards, all pcie cards, sata connectors, use one USB port at a time, use one ramstick at a time (test your 1 ramstick in a different computer that is working). See if it POSTS.
      Then start re-adding each component one at a time.

      Robin Clarijs you mean 7700k?

    • @brechtthebest
      @brechtthebest 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robin Clarijs Well, if you have the intel laying around and it has better performance than the r7 1800X (like the i7 7820X does outperform it, and the previous 10 core intel CPU's probably did too), than why not use the best CPU you have at your disposal instead of the CPU that is currently popular in the community? That is like having a gtx 1080 or 1080Ti having around and than use the rx 580 (which performs between a gtx1060 6gb and a gtx1070) just for the sake of pleasing the nvidia- bashers...

    • @fruitcaketech934
      @fruitcaketech934 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brecht Schatteman the cpu is not popular, did you not see his video on why he is using it? It's so he does what he preaches, if he's gonna praise the 1700 for it's value and that everyone should buy it, why doesn't he use it, of course Intel offers better but at a much higher price, and while he might be able to afford it, the majority that watch his channel can't.

    • @brechtthebest
      @brechtthebest 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      FruitCakeTech And because most people are watching his channel can't afford a intel X-series CPU, he has to use the r7 1700? I bet even most people can't effort that, so maybe he should stick to the 1600 which is preached as the best bang for your buck available now. The 'do as you preach thing' has more to do with belief than with scenario's like this, I would link such a saying more to fanboyism than a real tech channel. Why? A tech channel does not only have to think about what the viewers would use in their case of content creation. A tech channel would also look at what gives the best performance for the use case that they have available. I am not saying that he has to go buy a 7820X or 7900X, but look at what they have available. I don't know if R7 does outperform the 6th gen 10 core CPU, but if it doesn't and you have that 10 core CPU laying around, why not use that instead of go out and buy a R7 for content creation. Of course he can still preach that the ryzen lineup for the moment is the best bang for your buck available, it doesn't make him have to use it. How many car guys preach about BMW superior handling but still don't use a BMW as their daily driver? I for the moment am pro android but I have an iPhone 6 which does work just fine, but because I am advising people to go buy a new android if they ask me what they should buy, that doesn't make me have to buy an android. Of course it could prove my point and I could try to get TH-cam views with titles like "why I switched to android and why iPhone sucks" but that is all not necessary to prove my point. I don't know this channel enough to know what he used before the R7, if that setup needed a replacement or the R7 is a big upgrade than it definitely is a great way to show 'do as you preach'. But if the R7 only performs on par or worse than his previous setup, than it is not showing 'do as you preach' but more showing either enough money to throw out of the window or a certain degree of fanboyism. I know this channel enough to know that he would try to avoid fanboyism though, their are other channels that don't try to avoid a bias. The reason I started following this channel a month ago was because he tries to be unbiased and can admit it when he is wrong.

      Brecht Schatteman your right, but it basically does on par with those cpus with a little overclock, and watch one of his videos, I forgot which one it was, he explains why he's doing it. So even if it's not the smartest thing, I applaud him for making a bold move.

    So a couple things. First, you can grab a power supply tester off of Amazon for less than 20$ with a digital display that is very easy to use to make sure your power supply is working properly. No need to buy a whole new PSU just to troubleshoot a POST issue(if it were turning off under load that would be a different story). Second, a faulty hard drive controller or other ICs on the drive (BIOS chip for example) can absolutely prevent a PC from POSTing, It's happened to me more than once with shit seagate drives. There have even been recalls and class actions over this for drives with especially high failure rates.
    Most of this was pretty good, generally speaking, you want to start with the quickest and easiest eliminations with troubleshooting and work your way to the more time consuming procedures. One thing I would add is to check any AIO cooler or open loop pumps and ensure they are working still, high temp states on that initial power surge can trip protection features that can also prevent POST. Also, start with unplugging any non-essential USB devices.

    Unplug the PC from the mains power. Unplug all external peripherals (Keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc). Then press the CPU power button for 30s or more to drain the CPU of the rogue current. Then try booting it.

    Also just make sure if you have a Kaby Lake Cpu you aren't putting it into a Sky Lake Mobo without having already updated the bios. If you don't have a Skylake Cpu (unless the mobo has some sort of quick flash) your only option is to just buy a cheap Skylake CPU, use it to update the bios, and then return it.

      This can also be a mobo problem tho, depends on other symptoms
      If debug LED's are off and you get no display, well, after you double-check everything, it's probably the mobo
      If the CPU debug light is on, your BIOS supports the CPU, and your 4/8 pin is plugged in, you can be fairly sure it's the CPU
      Note that CPUs generally not break, bent pins can happen though

    Unplug PSU from wall, turn the PSU switch off and then press the power on button on your case/mobo and hold it for 1+ min and voila it got fixed.

    So I turn my PC on, no signal to monitor, no lights for usb devices. Worked fine the day before. Unplug the power cord, drained the power, restarted PC, works. Weird. 5 minutes later no signal on monitor, usb devices have no lights. Restart pc. Nothing. Tried draining the power, nothing. Take PC apart. Try RAM in different slots, one at a time. Nothing. Tried no GPU, nothing. Took the CMOS battery out, let it sit for several hours. No bueno. Best I get is fans working, motherboard lights on, but usb devices and monitor get no power. Ok. I have a second PC I built from old parts, I turn that on, works fine. Swap the PSU's. My second PC still works fine, so not a PSU problem. Fk. So it must be a motherboard problem. Luckily I had wanted to get a new cpu, which meant a new motherboard anyway... but I was in no rush...

    One more tip: If you are using an SSD and it occasionally decides to die and come back to life after unplugging and plugging back in, it's actually the PSU that's bad and a fluctuation on the 5V rail puts the SSD in power surge protection. I know this because I changed an SSD and a motherboard just because of this weird symptom.

    After a night of gaming and my pc working for 2 and a half years this morning I was using it for less then 5 mins when bang my PC just shut off like a power out, little did I know it was not a power out. Basically it turns of for 0.5 of a second fans start up and everything but with no display showing and it turning straight back off again. First I thought it was dust inside the case/psu so but have since cleaned all that up. Then I went to the nearest IT store and they told me it was a shortage in one of the components of the PC so I have pulled everything out from drives to gpus and ram. None of that worked. Can someone please tell me if it’s either the psu or mother board because I have deffinitly narrowed it down to just that thanks.

    One quick thing to try: pull out all RAM and expansion cards and re-insert. Sometimes oxidization on the copper pins causes problems and the heating/cooling/heating/cooling of a PC over time cause things to become un-seated. Re-inserting cards and RAM can 'scrub' oxidization off the copper and forces a re-seat.

    So one time, I had to go somewhere and I put my PC to sleep for like more than 2 hours when I was gone. And when I come back and tried to turn on my PC, it wouldn't post. I have Corsair RGB stuff so when I turn off my PC, I hit the space bar and the RGB lights were on, my mouse wasn't on, no display on the monitor. So I trouble shoot the thing. I did research on what happened, I talked to my dad to see what he think is the problem. He told me to reset the CMOS, which I did but didn't do anything. I reinstalled the ram and it still didn't work. I took out my GPU to see if it's the GPU, but it wasn't. So it leads me to the 2 choices, The Mobo or the PSU. I tested the PSU first with a Paper Clip and hook it up to the 2 black wires. turn it on and the fan was spinning. So it's the Mobo. I RMAed it. It kinda took me a while despite that I lost the CPU Socket cover and I heard that if you RMA the Mobo without the Cover, the warranty will be voided. Good thing I found those things on eBay as well for a package for my CPU. Took me like 5 days, then after that. I packaged up the Motherboard and send it off to them. Took me a couple of weeks and checking back to the website that it was a Bios error or replacing chips. So when it was done and I got it back, I bought the Cryorig M9 CPU Cooler to upgrade my stock CPU Cooler and it is running quietly. So after I done all those rebuilding and I kinda snapped a pin on the USB 3.0, it was fixed. I booted it up and I was happy. I got straight to light gaming to see that it's getting low frames or frames drops. I realized that my Drivers wasn't working so I reinstalled it. Did that and it was complete, but Nvidia shadowplay wasn't working. It was a big deal but will be when a new game comes out and I want to record it when it was launched and maybe gets some views on it. Anyways, that's kinda my story how I troubleshoot and fixed my PC
    The Motherboard was gigabyte and my PC was in the 400-500, but what can I expect?

    Intel Core i3 6100

    i suspected that the case power button is faulty , but even the MB power button does not work .
    The only way i can switch the PC on (and this only work from time to time) is pressing CMOS button multiple times until it powers on by itself .
    I have noticed that, after clearing CMOS -to bring the PC on- my Bios clock is couple of minutes off the correct time , does CMOS stops bios clock ? does fault/dead MB battery affect POST ? MB debug screen does not show any unusual code .
    Now my PC is on 24/7 because of this , afraid that it won't be back on again .
    Any suggestions/advice ?

    Yo, I have an MSI mobo, which when powered on, show the top red led meaning that there is a fault with the cpu, then proceeds to turn off. I have now ordered a new cpu so let's hope that works!

    12:04 I did that exact same thing one time. I was looking for the problem for about 3 hours and got so frustrated with myself until my brother came over and pressed the reset button which turned on the PC and I felt stupid. At least I will never make that mistake again

    Had one that would shut off half way into Windows boot. Opened up the PC to see if there was something going on in there and sure enough.... There's the CPU cooler hanging half way off the socket. Stupid AM3 retention brackets. That happened twice to the same Gateway computer. About every 2 to 3 years. I guess the plastic would dry out and it caused the little part the metal latch hooks on to snap off.

      Yeah, only machine I've experienced the issue with. I've used the clamp style for a long time. This is the only machine ever to have the thing break. After the last time and ordering the same kind as before - I saved the good half so I didn't need to buy a whole new retention module next time. lol

    I recently had some issues with my PC. It would bsod randomly while gaming or while at the desktop, and the bsods were always kernel security check failure. After days investigating it turns out my CPU just needed more voltage........ And I didn't even overclock it.

    I used to work at a PC parts/repair shop and this is some sound advice. Almost exactly what we did in the back when a system wouldn't POST.
