oh man I am enjoying this exercise SO MUCH! I also LOVE the fact you sit through it and narrate it wisely. You are onto something here, man. I have been doing this exercise for a week, every day, starting the double with my WEAKER hand and tapping my weaker foot (left, in my case) The difference is noticeable in matter of minutes, y'all! Can't wait to see what happens in a few months! Woo-hoo!! :) Cheers, Rob, keep 'em coming! Matt, Montenegro

Yeah, I switch between starting hands every 5 minutes.
Another variation is to play the double starting on the upbeat, so that the second stroke lands on the down beat. Starting with both hands. Maybe for the second 10 minutes.

Great video (already addicted to this channel), after many decades of practising on sofas, I am 3000 year old mummy from Egypt, I took part in Mr. Magou movie with Leslie Nielsen and after that episode in National Museum, i put night porter unconscieouss and got him wrapped in toilet paper instead of me in sarcophag and now am wondering in Grinnich Willage in the search for last New Wave band. This exercises are more than I need for basic punkrock. I feel adequate as Vincent Price in CBGB club.

So, I’m an old self taught drummer who recently decided to get back into it. Beat Down Brown’s simple way of breaking down the essentials that I’ve never been taught has been a huge value to me. He is by far my favorite channel on drumming. I have made tremendous progress so far, and I can’t wait to see where this goes. Beat Down, you have inspired me to dust off the old kit and get at it. Thank you sir!!!

  • @jgillott

    Rob,
I must tell you that this was one of the most effective exercises for me. I have struggled with my long rolls (doubles) for a long time. Although I practice a lot, the struggle persisted. (I practice more for physical and mental therapy, I am closer to 80 than 70, and have rare occasion to perform. Most of my drumming over the last 60+ years has been with fife & drum corps. But, when I can, I love to work on my set-drumming). My variation of your exercise is that I do it at 120 bpm for about 10 - 15 minutes with a pair of Cooperman Parley rosewood sticks (100 grams + each). Then another 10 minutes or so with a pair hickory 3S style sticks at the 120 bpm. Staying with these sticks, and for about ten minutes each tempo change, increase up to 140 bpm then 150 bpm. I sometimes end the practice session doing about ten minutes with a pair of set-drumming sticks, maybe 5B’s?
Thank you for your videos - I believe they are great. Also, I received your ‘Traditional’ T-shirt, which I had ordered before you change back to matched grip! Probably a good decision on your part. But you really looked cool playing traditional.
    -Joe

This exercise has been great for my doubles but recently I've been applying the same twenty minute workout to other rudiments such as single stroke roll and single paradiddle, changing the dynamics when you call for it. REALLY noticed a difference bringing that single paradiddle down to level two. HOT DAMN!!

I already hated my doubles, & this video PROVED how much they suck! haha! But, I've found a new way to practice (I'm gonna have to go slower than 120bpm, though) & I'd imagine as another commenter here mentioned, it would work just as great with singles, & paradiddles (the OTHER 2 "must do" exercises, you recently posted on Drumeo). Not gonna front, it took me MONTHS & MANY attempts to get used to you, but...I bow to the master! Keep it up, & now I'm on a digging expedition of your old(er) lessons!

Thank you, Rob! I’m getting more and more into these kind of videos : practise together with someone better than you, watch them, watch yourself, and loads of repetitions. This works way better than just getting advice, I find: plus you actually log minutes of playing, not more minutes of just watching videos.

Rob, thanks again for this. I came back to it a few weeks ago after laying off for a few months and have been practicing it every day: once with singles, once with doubles, and once with paradiddles, for a total of an hour. It's fantastic what a tune-up this drill is for rusty hands! And the patter never gets old, even if I've now got to the point where I can repeat it along with you verbatim...

Brother Rob - GREAT JOB. I'm a frustrated drummer who is in the fitness world. I train MMA fighters and have been doing special training to keep them alert, aware, and on target in the presence of fatigue and pressure. IT IS THE "DISCIPLINE" YOU SPEAK OF. I'm now doing research on this "discipline" and scientists have given is a VERY COOL NAME . . . . . Psychomotor Vigilance. This is a "thing" and it can be trained - from fighters to pilots, and from musicians to videogamers. We are now studying and measuring it. I just wanted to share with you and your fans that this is SOMETHING that is TANGIBLE, it can be developed, and its VERY important. Thank you for your wonderful contribution to the drumming and music community!

Rob your instruction style is AWESOME. I am returning to drums after a long absence. I’ve been doing this excersize for a week now plus the two 5 minute singles and it’s amazing how fast my hands are coming back. The first night my left wrist was screaming at me but I knew it meant progress. Love the way you take rudiments and apply them to the kit. First rate! Please keep making these. So many of us are benefitting.

Total beginner but I lasted the entire time. Can't say I didn't have plenty of mess ups and resets but I made it. Learning traditional grip too so that was a big sticking point during this (pun intended). Thanks for the great videos!!

I've found through the years, dancers will request a song like "Alley Cat" or "Kansas City", it's not necessarily the song they want, it's more likely the relaxed easy 120 BPM swing that is comfortable to dance to they are asking for.

I just gave this a go. I've been playing drums for 25 years. My rudiments SUCK! But I stuck it out, and by the end my doubles started feeling good. Thanks Rob. I love your channel.

Hi Rob. You have no idea how much this has helped. I also use this workout with paradiddles. Can’t tell you how much that has improved my weak hand. You really are some teacher.

Thanks Rob. 45 years playing, started in Scottish pipe and drums and did this sort of thing then. Forgot how important this was. Great lesson and my lockdown challenge! Stay safe everyone. 👍🏻

I started following you about 5 months ago, and have found you most helpful to my everyday routine. Your easy going approach which seems to appeal to drummers at all skill levels is very effective. Also, you seem to have captured the power of online classes far before many of your peers. Bravo to you from a 73 year young drummer!! Cheers!

    Great exercise Rob.
TIP: If you get used to this tempo and want to speed up, click the three dots in the upper right corner of the screen and choose ‘playback speed’.
You have a choice of four speeds slower and four faster.

I could do the full thing with matched (with occasional mistakes) but I switched to traditional since our highschool is making the transition to traditional for Drumline. 2 minutes in on the switch to traditional and I have to tap out but I have already seen improvements. Simple but great exercise for learning control, glad my private instructor showed me this 👍

This is one of my favorite exercises from "The Beat down", I also like to add a 6 stroke roll, 5 stroke roll, and double paradiddle turn around. 5 minutes of any rudiments that I choose. Thank you R.Beezey
