Just remember guys, you do NOT have to exclusively listen to goth music to be goth! You can listen to anything else, the entire “alternative” community is welcoming and anyone who says otherwise and judges you for your taste is not a true one.
being goth is more than just listening to music though. being goth is also a political statement, just like being punk. "punk" was literally a homophobic slur that punks took back and turned into a genre. Goth embodies that same value set of respecting queer people. Not being racist, and more than that, being anti racist, anti fascist and anti homophobic and anti transphobic. You cant be a goth without being a leftist. PERIOD.
Some facts you may also find intersting - Cybergoths are closer to ravers than goths, hence their other name "graver" (gothic-raver). They mostly (although not always exclusively) listened to genres like EBM, industrial, gabber, & harsh noise. There's some elements of goth in their fashion but their appearance was mostly inspired by cyberpunk. On-lookers see anything out of the 'norm' and darkly inclined and it gets lumped under the goth umbrella, although it's a genre of it's own and their music is very different from gothic-rock. 'Vampire' and 'romantic' goth derived from gothic literature. I think it was Voltaire that claimed "vampire goths are essentially romantic goths with fangs". Perhaps a controversial opinion, but goth really doesn't need all the sub-categories. It is in itself a music based sub-culture so the fashion doesn't any less diminish a person's identity. I can appreciate the labels purely from a research point of view e.g. people searching the internet for a particular items of clothing may find the terms useful. But goth itself doesn't need to be broken down into categories as this could lead to people feeling limited or like they need to fit into a particular sub-genre of goth. I do find that the labels are getting out of hand when goth gets fused with literally any other genre or fashion e.g. hippy-goth. If we did this for everything then the categories could go on endlessly. I've took elements from all sorts of fashion over the years but always simply classed myself as goth. Further to this point, you can listen to gothic-rock but also appreciate and listen to other genres of music. You don't have to limit your tastes just to feel part of the subculture. As long as people are happy with being given the goth label and have an appreciation for the music then they are welcomed in the scene regardless of what they are wearing. 🖤
You're so right! I don't even have a gothic profile picture on TH-cam and I don't even wear heavy makeup. I only use mascara and a dark lipstick and I'm good to go. I enjoy different music genres and later this year my boyfriend and his dad will be taking me to the mall to get some chokers and a pyramid studded belt from hot topic. I've always found those things cool
I'm wayyy more of a metalhead, but I also love gothic rock and dark wave, and I've loved goth fashion since I was kid. I don't dress goth, but I'm very interested in it, so thanks for making this video!
That's all cool and great but I do believe you forgot to mention, that goth people ( especially adults) do not wear these fashionable looks everyday. 95% of time we wear the same clothes as normies ( well, maybe a bit darker if you know what I mean) and only 5% - the LOOKS are on us (parties/festivals etc etc). I can't imagine myself in the customers office wearing platforms and heavy makeup - security team would not allow me to pass the reception even with personal card :| p.s You don't have to wear all this clothes to be goth tho. Listening music is the key, not which fashion style your clothes belong to.
This video is particularly only about fashion styles that goths can wear, not overall about goth subculture and music! In my next video I will cover the basics of goth subculture which is exactly what you described!
Thank you for mentioning the androgyny, gender bending aspects of the styles and looks, and also for being clear about Mana being a "him". Goth used to totally embrace gender non conformity, and androgyny without assuming a person sexual orientation. I am one that gravitated to the scene for the acceptance of us not so "MANLY" men that love dresses and such. It seems to have toned down a bit, which is a shame really.
Isn't it dependant on the type of goth style chosen? I guess victorian era style was not at all androgenous, so if it serves as inspiration, then end result shouldn't be surprising And when and how did the ,,scene" became less accepting? I'm not a goth, so I would be glad to know if it is an objective change or just your personal opinion
things getting popular always has its ups and downs. On one hand it becomes more accepted and easier to access goth music and clothing and there is more of it. On the other hand the stuff that made it original and unique gets watered down.
Goth and grunge fashion are the two types of fashion that really can have different kinda shi for different ppl like for example like thr shi Kurt wore was a different kinda grunge then like what ppl "classify" with grunge now , same with goth as well ig😅
not sure if it counts as a goth sub-style, but there's a sub-style in gyaru that is called "goshikku" which basically resembles trad goth but with a gyaru twist in it! pretty similar to how goth lolita works ig.
the different styles are just labels and overall belong to goth! They make it easier to find specific clothes etc. but it doesnt matter what style of goth u are! If you wanna mix up the labels, go ahead :D
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've always appreciated music and the entire goth subculture but I didn't feel confident in actually declaring myself as a goth person (mainly because I still don't know specifically which type I feel most comfortable with). I loved your video, it helped me a lot.
lisaaqq thank u to explain more about this style. i have always listen to post punk and goth music in general actually and i want to dress like one and stop caring about what people will think of me. i love your style, you inspired me. you got a new follower and i loved your accent too. make more content like this and goth blesss you 🧛♀
06:51 I would call this "original lolita" (because it was the first lolita style that emerged. Gothic lolita arrived later) instead of classic lolita to avoid any confusion because classic lolita is also the name of a lolita substyle.
@kuroyamaevisekai that wouldn't exactly be accurate. The pink outfit in the picture is sweet lolita, no doubt about that. But when referring to original lolita (what was there before gothic lolita did) there were some outfits that were sweet, and some that were more classic. Although when I say that you shouldn't imagine the classic lolita of today. Imagine muted floral dresses and loose fitting tabliers (a certain type of apron) with almost no lace or ribbons. It wasn't elegant, it was quite frumpy (which I do appreciate personally). Classic brands like Innocent World have done things like that in the 2000s but by then it was already more polished and more embellished.
I have to be a corporate goth because of work, i've tried to make it my own by pretending i'm an office worker in the underworld. Or a villans front desk. So it's not just modern clothes but in black, i am dressed very differently to my coworkers. So I at least get to keep a bit of my personality.
I kind of felt partially called out for the soft goth😭 I’m not really great at doing goth makeup so I just do a bit of black eyeshadow under my eyes with mascara, wear my rosary beads or other jewelry , a goth band t shirt, and some random jeans every day😭 I swear I’m not lazy I just can’t afford stuff

The way I want to dress, I wouldn't consider it to exactly be goth. Which is why I'm nervous about dressing in dark frilly yet simple skirts, tops, and dresses because I don't want to be considered a "poser." There is so much history behind the gothic style and culture, I don't want to take away from that. I only have a few goth songs in my Playlist, I'm more into rock. Point is, I want to dress more pretty and feminine but dark, so I don't know if that's insulting at all.
