  • What exactly is goth? Is it a tribe? Music? Art style? Novel genre?
    There are visigoths, gothic architecture, neo-gothic, gothic horror, goth rock, gothic lolita, and so many more.
    Ah! There are so many things that are labelled as “goth”. But are there links between any of those? Let’s find out together!

    Hi! Long time no see. Here’s the question for today. When was the first time you heard the word goth? Which goth is your favourite?
    As mentioned, I first learnt the word “goth” as a fashion style. To be more specific, I learnt about Gothic Lolita first. Then the more I explore, the more I love things that are categorised as “goth”. Now I love reading classic gothic novels. So, if you have any recommendations or you just want to type down your favourites, feel free to do so.

      I can't remember if I leared about the music, fashion, or literature first. But I do know that as a teen, I was obsessed with gothic lolita and I wanted so badly to look like Mana lol. (Currently, I wear a sweetish-classic style of lolita!)
      I also listened to Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Switchblade Symphony, Cranes, etc.
      And literature wise, I loved The Castle of Otronto, anything by Edgar Allen Poe, The Phantom of the Opera, and Frankenstein!

      The first time I saw that word was on a cultural magazine that came with a newspaper when I was a young teenager, I think. The article was about the goth subculture, where young people were described as allowing themselves to feel and enjoy the darker side of life and thus more free, and also the clothing and music were mentioned. I was in love with them and I love the culture, music and style, even though I don't listen often to the bands, and don't dress on a gothic style.
      In Spanish the goths as in historical people and goths as cultural movement are described with two different (but somewhat similar) words, the first being "godos" and the second "góticos". So I only stumbled upon the confusion until I learned enough English.

    Back in the middle 00's, i was fascinated by the metal scene but i was an avid reader of Anne Rice and anything dark and tense, i loved those things, but being broke as i was i could never dress "goth" enough.
    Fast forward some 15 years, i am in a stable job, and thinking i am too old for this, until i snap. That was stupid thinking of me, and then i followed my dreams to be the weird goth i always wanted to be. And now, i am eager to know more of the story of it all. Thanks for the video!

    I think the first time i learned about goths was from the cartoons that I watched. I like classical gothic architecture best best i think it presents the best through line for all renditions of Goth. On the outside it's intimidating, huge, and unabashed about itself and then when you go inside you see the resplendence of the style from the way light enters through the stained glass windows. A Feature that from the outside might have seemed strange but is finally understood once entered inside the church. The old germanic Goths from my readings sacked Rome because they felt like their needs weren't being heard by the distant roman states and they appreciation of the greek cultures was never realized.

    I had the advantage(?????) of learning about Gothic literature (Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights) and then the Goth Tribe first due to being a fairly avid reader as a kid, so whenever someone got arguementative over what "real " goth is, which by them was a musical thing, I would simply ask do you know where the word "Goth" comes from? and that would render a surprising number of them speehcless. It was a petty move, I am very aware, but at least I could enjoy my all black look with a dash of colors and flowers in peace after that.

      I agree i think the “ITS A MUSIC BASED SUBCULTURE” people are biased. Thats objectively the least interesting part of goth subculture. The music is also pretty shit for the most part… 😂 the fashion, the liberal political ideologies, the love for dark themes and messages, those are all more important than what music you listen to which literally affects no one but yourself. You cant make a political statement by listening to music in your own headphones, you make a political statement by standing out, rejecting norms, etc. to me the way goths dress up, partake in macabre hobbies, loudly and obviously displaying political messages of rebellion and individuality and anti-capitalism…. those are all more impactful than what songs you add to your private playlist. Not sure what current goths think they are accomplishing by listening to goth music or why they love to gatekeep the subculture so much, like sorry but the goths who dress up but dont listen to the music are STILL more goth than people who only listen to the music, because they are actively pushing against society’s boundaries and expectations, you are not if all u do is listen to a certain music genre.

    This is exactly what I was hoping to find after becoming curious about the subject and then some! Thank you so much for this video. I hadn't realised or even guessed at the broad nature of being goth. Did the goth rock scene actually take their name as inspiration from older gothic movements, do you know? I might've missed something, admittedly. Either way, fantastic work on this. Love it!

    • @kjrasa
      @kjrasa  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, many goth bands took inspiration from gothic literature. For example, the name Bela Lugosi in Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Death" is the name of the actor in Dracula (1931 film). Many other goth music explored the dark, haunting, love and loss theme similar the theme in the gothic literature. Glad you like the video, btw.
