    Happy Halloween season everyone!
    I know gothic clothes are not costumes reserved only for spooky times. But I know that many of you may dress a bit more gothic for this special occasion.
    I wish all of you a good time! Even if you are not partying or wearing gothic clothes or Halloween costumes (like me, actually).

      By the way we cybers like R-rx, nolongerhuman, Incubite, life cryed and preemptive strike 0.1...or at least this one dose and other good bands? I tend to weave out the cleaner songs from the not so clean. I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints so clean is our thing 😊

    Goth is not only music, culture and fashion but also a comunity. When i moved interstate i found a comunity of like minded people though our love for the darker things, such as music, books, fashion, etc. Its truly magical. I wear what i feel comftable in which just happens to be under the unbrella of goth.

      Seriously. Late Gen-X tradgoth here. You want to find a community that will scoop you up in a new city? Find out who and where's the local screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. There's very likely to be someone you'll hit it off with, and get involved in the community. We're a thick, black river running through the heart of every moderate+ size city. Damn near any rural community has at least one goth, however nascent. As long as you're not a fascist, we'll likely embrace you.

      White Goths are also called Elf Goths, because Elves, in mythologies across Europe, tend to appear dressed in white, sometimes being called ”brides”. Also, there is the Dark Elf typology în folklore (Dark not as cromatic, bur as manifestation or intention) that would fit very well with the White Goth. The Brides of Dracula from the novel of Bram Stoker were inspired, mostly, from the local Romanian version of the Dark Elves, the Iele.

    There is also Gothabilly. It's like Rockabilly but more dark. 50's classic style with dark tones. Some people stay in one genre and others have closets full of multiple. I myself have victorian, romantic, traditional, gothabilly and corporate. It's nice to understand the differences, but I hate having to be filtered down into a specific title. I just throw myself under the 'goth' umbrella and dress how I feel comfortable for the day or occasion.

    In terms of what I wish I could wear, it'd probably be Victorian Goth, or a steampunk plague doctor look, but at the same time, I could neither afford it nor bother actually getting dressed if clothes are too complicated/warm. So I'd have to say Corporate Goth for practical reasons, lol.
    It's interesting to know about some of the different styles though. I knew most of them, but I didn't realize there was so much difference between Victorian and Romantic Goth! Neat.

    Love the vid! I wear Gothic Lolita (alongside Sweet Lolita and other substyles). I would describe our style's colour palette as "monochromatic and jewel tones" , as colours like sapphire, ruby, and even emerald appear rather often in what's supposed to be a black-and-white fashion 😂

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      As an old school lolita I see more black x white pieces in old school sweet than I do in gothic lolita pieces. But because way in the olden days (lol) "gothic lolita" was used as an umbrella term for all the sub styles, and the black x white colorway was one of the most popular colorways in sweet lolita back then (plus the boundaries between the substyles were rather vague at times) it became linked to gothic lolita even though back then and now the black x black colorway and the use of jewel tones have been more prevalent in gothic lolita (substyle) like you said.
      Mentioning the term "gothic lolita" to someone who wore the fashion at the end of the 90s or the early 2000s might involuntarily conjure up an image of something that looks like a black x white dress by btssb instead of modern moitie or atepie pieces. I'm glad we stopped using gothic lolita as an umbrella term, it was confusing at times.

    • @totalsaikou4520
      @totalsaikou4520 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@andymccoy8370 Um, what? Lolita developed separately from Goth fashion, it originated in the 70's as street fashion movement for women who wanted to dress in a modest yet loud fashion (a contradiction, since most modest wear is stuff like Niqab, Nun Habits, etc. are the opposite of attention-grabbing). Sweet and Gothic Lolita both branched off from Old School Lolita of the 90's/80s, which also developed from the Proto Lolita of the 70's. The fashion style has literally nothing to do with the Goth music subculture at all. Even Gothic Lolita is influenced by Gothic aesthetics alone and has no connections to western Goth music, as seen in this video.

      i would describe how i used to dress as " urban "goth
      ...meaning my style would be:
      all black clothes with dark elements such as designs in the clothing like spider web in the stitching , also diy patches, composed of other old NIN shirts ,, or SLAYER bits ,, not always stitched , on either ...my friend would make a design out of a swatch off a metal shirt and your new piece of clothing ,and about 30 safety pins ,lol
      mostly however , my style was and urban/metal style which had to maintain both the dark theme.... and not get thrown out of mainstream dance clubs ..lol as i had many friends and ran in different cultural circles
      this way i could go to the type o negative show at the palladium , then later with my homies at the after party ..that was beltin' out wu-tang til 5 am ..lol
      im old now so i don't really go off hunting for fashions any more ... i look like gandalf these days lol ...i give off more of the the Christopher lee /saruman /dooku vibe now lool

    This video made me realise something.
    Since I was a little I really admired goth fashion, I always liked goth characters from tv shows or cartoons, I had a huge collection of monster high dolls and I was obsessed with vampires. When I was growing up I wasn’t sure what my fashion style was. So my clothes were the most basic ones. Even though I was always drown to goth subculture, I didn’t want to stand out from others by dressing as I want. My fear of being judged by people was strong enough for me to never really express myself. After watching this video and delving deeper into the topic I came to conclusion that I should finally start working on my dreams and I should not care what other people will think about my style, life is short and we should enjoy being ourselves for as long as we can! (Also I found out what gothic styles I am into, so it’s great for a beginner like me to know in which category of clothing I need to search to buy something cool. I will start dressing up as something between traditional and romantic goth and maybe I will diversify my outfits with some elements from the lolita goth style🖤🖤🖤)

Many of the men in this substyle have long hair and wear frilly shirts, women can wear more flowwy dresses, and can also resemble lolita in the use of petticoats, and a lot of lace! I’m younger would like to add that the culture is rooted in the music. The music is the soul not just an the esthetic. I don’t discourage people finding themselves and exploring goth, that’s amazing! Just know it is about the music. The heart, then the outside to reflect that. There are so many alternative subcultures with other music to l express that darker esthetic without claiming something that isn’t aligned with goth music and culture.

    I listen to a lot of hard rock and metal music and I've found (thru research) that a good number of the bands I listen to are goth or incorporate gothic musical elements into their songs
    I like the goth aesthetic, especially romantic goth. But I don't dress goth
    I read predominantly dark romance and dark erotica.
    I don't like horror movies since I'm a huge scaredy cat, but I do love Mike Flanagan's work(even though I always lose a month of sleep whenever I watch his more spooky stuff) since they deal with a lot of real world and relatable dark themes.
    I watch anime and I tend to gravitate towards animes that have darker themes(not necessarily horror but sometimes I'll watch a horror anime if it's not too gratuitous with the gore) and explore deep philosophical ideas, especially ideas relating to morality, suffering, justice, etc.
    I'm not sure if I would be considered goth, but I have been interested in this subculture for the past 13 years.

    People that do this type of various goth fashion videos always forget about the Flapper goth style, that was extremely popular when I was a teen, around 1988 to 1993 ( The best example of that is Siouxsie in the Peek-A-Boo video or Johnette Napolitano in the Happy Birthday video ).

    A perspective from someone older. Before Bahaus we called any dark sludgey blues based music Goth. Velvet Underground, Doors, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper. As far as fashion; the Victorian/ Edwardian style we called Annie after Anne Rice, the more European minimalist style such as Black pants and black turtleneck we called Gloom-bopper. I don't recall hearing those styles called Goth until about 1988. I do remember also that if you called an Annie a Wanda they would get really pissed. Wanda was shorthand for Madonna Wanna be. To non scene people it was tough to tell them apart. I don't recall the Annies having a particular taste in music but the Gloom boppers tended toward The Smiths, The Cure and Morrissey. Though we would frequently see them at punk shows acting too cool to have fun.

Corporate that can switch up to often a rivethead look in 5-15 minutes depending on how fast I can get away from coworkers trying to obligate me to my job past my scheduled time (even though I left nothing undone) and get to a bathroom or unoccupied office space to change. Usually the pants worn ti work remain the same but tucked in boots that appear as shoes when covered with the pant legs and a black tee over the collared shirt with my iron cross out and exposed. Then I literally pull a hat out of the bag and voila! …or go hatless and let the hawk fly.

  • @Ajz092
    @Ajz092 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I used to dress Goth. Not a particular style as one shown here, but my own kind of flare. Today, I don't dress like that anymore because #1 I'm too fat to squeeze into all that old stuff I own, and #2: These clothing items are very expensive, and I don't want to ruin them with the various jobs I do. Nowadays, I dress in camo pants/shorts, boots, and a plain black or gray shirt. Not exactly "goth", but the mindset is still very much there. Also, since I now live in the mid-west, I'd stick out even more so than I did when I lived in Florida. I got tired of the dirty looks, tbh so I started dressing "normal", or as normal as I can be without feeling violated. Now people generally ignore me.

    I would say definitely say I'm a cross between Cyber & Nu Goth. I think I went with that kind of aesthetic because of my witchy ways, comfort and my obsession with techwear. When I did work a traditional 9-5, I did try corporate goth but not intentionally, I just gravitate towards darker colors naturally. In this new chapter of my life, I'm thinking about going either Trad or Western Goth. But tbh I often just jokingly refer to myself as a "budget goth" because I wear black clothes with band t-shirts... For cybergoth/industrial bands, I'd recommend Nine Inch Nails; Skinny Puppy; Front Line Assembly; Ministry; Cabaret Voltaire; etc.

As for the Ostrogoths, they wiped out what remained of the Western Roman Empire. Let's just say they stabbed the beating heart of the old Roman Empire leaving the East to become the Byzantine Empire.

    Unfortunately, today, a great deal of people under 25 who call themselves “goth” have no idea that there is even such a genre as goth music. It seems like it’s solely an aesthetic to many young people. It really bothers me a lot. I wish it didn’t. 😔
    I’m so grateful to have grown up in a small, artsy town outside of NYC that had a goth and industrial record store and clothing store (Montclair, NJ). I used to skip school in middle school to hang out there and learn about music. Thankfully, the owner wasn’t a creep. He taught me everything I know about goth music and culture. Montclair also had plenty of thrift stores, antique shops, art galleries, and a theater that showed the rocky horror picture show every Saturday night at midnight. It was a great place to grow up, and I owe many aspects of who I am to living in such a offbeat, yet charming and accepting place.

    I would argue that there IS a music style associated with Gothic Lolita.
    Mana from Malice Mizer (later Moi Dix Mois) has been refereed to as the one who started that fashion style (I don't know if it's true or not, but so the rumor goes) on account of the store he owns that may have been the first to sell clothing in that style.
    Which would make Malice Mizer to some degree, and perhaps Moi Dix Mois to an even larger degree, the type of music that belongs to Gothic Lolita fashion.
    (Although the darker, more romantic Visual K or JRock, like Raphael and some other bands I can no longer recall the name of, might also fit that basic genera.)

    Hello. I am an old lady now, but back in the seventies I sewed my own long dresses, listened to Cream, Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, and EL&P. I wore only black in the early 80's when I lived in the Village in NYC. I call myself a "Baby Goth" since back then the term "Goth" only meant gothic alluding mostly to architecture, e.g. Notre Dame in Paris, or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. My friends and family used to criticize my wearing black everyday. I couldn't help myself then; most cool New Yorkers back then wore only black as they still do.

    Cybergoth
    Any fashion from any version of Cyberpunk (2020, RED or 2077) by Mike Pondsmith are an excellent visual guide. Their iconic visual representative would be NIN (by Trent Reznor and frequent collaborator Atticus Ross) but nearly any Industrial fan will do! They mix the Trad canon styles of punk with post apoc and pre-cybertech (that ironically turned into perfectly viable tech between 1998 to 2023.)
    Micro computer decks may be of actual lined to action walking pcs/ accounting machines. Plenty of old converted tech and use of Linux are common! Some may have weapon facsimiles but that has become more rare since 2002.

However, they're very hard to actually wear or put together in real life if you're low maintanence and lazy and lack any way to have access to a good corset like me. I usually just prefer to wear a simple all black look (black tshirts, velvety black sweatpants or navy jeans, black sneakers) with a sprinkle of colors like orange, light green, red. I also don't wear makeup or do my hair in ways that typically sells the goth look because skin is senstive. I dunno, I suppose I am the muggle of the goths lol
