I stayed in Arlington St. And in 1967 my friend sold his plastic ruby ball to the Yankee sailors clients whom we ran errands for .This Ball was used to play the first game of American football in Glasgow namely in Kelvingrove park right next to the river kelvin a few hundred yards from the Eldon St entrance .These sailors set up camp in and around our area when they were on shore leave from Dunoon naval base .I was thinking of writing a book about my young live and times lighting the morning coal fire and running errands for these Yankees and being paid in dollars that were worth 7/6 pence in those days

    Great video.
Where you saw the tunnel portal at around the 3:35 mark, in 1994 (I think), the river Kelvin burst it's banks and flowed into the tunnel. The water went all the way via Anderston and flooded the low level platforms at Central Station to a depth reaching the windows of a train. As you came under the road there, you might have noticed a large hump in the path - that's part of the flood defence now.
I also know where 'thd entrance which should never be spoken of' is located. But, I am old and would probably break if I tried to get in. 😁

Just moved to the west end of Glasgow after 40 years away. Don't really know the area so have been exploring the area and kinda figured out the Kelvinbridge to Kirklees bit. Little did I know that the Tesco I use was the railway terminus! Great video my friend

Enjoyable video buddy, before Tesco was built there was an agreement in place that the railway line could be reinstated, if ever required. But I don't think that applies anymore, Maryhill Central was big as The Wyndford estate, loved your pronunciation, was originally a large army barracks.

The most ideal situation would be having the Tesco and the railway together haha!

Fun fact, you can actually get into Mary hill station from the Tesco. Network rail comes by every so often to inspect it.

As so much of the line ran underground, it was notorious for smoke entering carriages and signals being difficult for drivers to read. Once alternative trams and buses duplicated the route, it fell from favour. The subterranean Widened Lines in London had a similar reputation and local services were withdrawn early in the twentieth century, but its strategic importance, especially in wartime, saw it survive into the 1970s.

I could imagine the smoke would have been a nightmare!

Do they still have river trips on The Clyde ?
I remember with great fondness, taking a trip to Rothesay as a child (in the 70's) stopping at Greenock, Gourock and Dunoon on the way.

That Tesco in Maryhill is on stilts so the line can still be re-opened up to it in future.

Where St Enoch Square and Shopping Centre is now, was the site of the old railway. There are tunnels heading east that are not in use. When there was talk of extending the Glasgow Underground to serve the east of the city, they planned to re use the tunnels but the financial crash put a stop to the project. Sadly the other big project to run a 20 min service from Glasgow Airport to Edinburgh via a magnetic levitation train or maglev was also scrapped.

As was the Bennie Railplane. It never made it past the experimental track built at Mingavie. I believe the assembly building is still there, but the overhead tracks and all have gone. It would have been a sight to behold - a carriage with a huge blender on each end!
