You have a picture of someone playing the cello standing (presumably the spike is adjustable for length.) Do some people prefer to play that way when they're not in ensemble in an orchestra? It's just that I saw someone play like that in a video once and I'd never seen it before. Hope you don't mind me asking a question that's off post.

Not at all! Some people like playing that way because it looks great on stage. It gives you mobility you normally don’t have when you play sitting. That way you could play on the street or just move freely around the stage.
You can often see that with electric cellos, almost all of them come with a guitarlike strap, but it’s not uncommon with acoustic instruments either. Mike Block, a great cellist, invented (and, I think, even patented) a cello strap for acoustic instruments. He also plays folk music, if you don’t know him I’d highly recommend checking him out.
But sometimes people would just adjust the endpin height on an acoustic instrument and play standing. Apocalyptica used to play like that in the beginning. It is less comfortable, since the instrument moves a lot from side to side, but some people are very good at that.

Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive reply. It was good to hear you talk, by the way - makes the connection between you and us that much stronger. And may I compliment your English. I assume it isn't your native language, but it's impeccable and commendably lucid.@@ElenaKoptevaCello
