      I agree. I know the other composers did their best, and maybe I just need to listen to their music more, but I feel that, with an occasional exception, none of the music from the later movies is as memorable or distinctive as when Williams did the scoring. It's almost as though, as the movies got darker, less whimsical, and less colorful, so did the music.

      @MaxtothePower actually harry did have a theme. You can hear it in this video at 17:22. I don't know if that's what you referred to as the "family theme" but it is most definitely Harry's theme.

  • @ScoreHeroMusic
    @ScoreHeroMusic 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

    What makes his musical tapestry so fierce and forboding is how it interludes in a variety of ways,
    There's the "He Who Must Not Be Named Theme" that is the bouncier figure played on low horns @16:00 (it shows up when he is only spoken of)
    The "Voldemort's Evil Deeds" which is a dark fanfare with horns trombones playing @16:12 (This one shows up less but is used more as a punctuating mark or climax for darker scenes)
    The Full "Voldemort Theme" @16:34 is the all-encompassing theme of the villain
    The "Sorcerer's Stone" theme 16:50 while less related to the villain personally does in fact work as a counterpoint, played along with the Voldemort theme
    John Williams is a genius and such a storyteller of music

    • @AlbertoGarcia-wd7sc
      @AlbertoGarcia-wd7sc 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Regarding Columbus I'm not so sure. The first two movies set the tone but, specially with The Chamber of Secrets, it suffers fron certain "blandness".
      Not that David Yates was any better, mind you. In fact he was probably worse.

  • @Marcelo_DBZ_Music
    @Marcelo_DBZ_Music ปีที่แล้ว +32

    There's a bit of a merging of two themes here.
    There's Voldemort's Theme
    And then there's what I would call the Sorcerer's Stone Theme, since it always played when they see or talk about it or Nicholas Flamel in the first one. It's that 3-note chord progression designed to be mysterious and dramatic.
    It's used side by side with Voldemort's Theme when he confronts him by the Mirror of Erised. Additionally, it's used in the 2nd one when they open the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets. So it's easy to see why the two would be lumped together.

    • @movieman6456
      @movieman6456 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’d say the Sorcerer’s Stone theme was recontextualized in Chamber of Secrets as an “Immortality Theme” which is closely related to Voldemort.
      On a first viewing, hearing the Sorcerer’s Stone leitmotif in the sequel could be brushed off as just a reuse of themes, but when Tom Riddle is revealed to be Voldemort, and associated with the theme, I think it’s appropriate to see it as a broader thematic piece than just relating it to the Stone.
      Who knows what Williams could have done down the line.
      Perhaps the Stone theme could evolve into the Horcrux theme.

    • @LukasLindner
      @LukasLindner 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes thats correct. Voldemorts Theme consists of two parts, one can be heard at 5:49 and the other one at 6:12. The Philosopher's Stone (or Sorcerer's Stone) motif (also called Three-Note-Motif) got reused in HP2. Because John Williams was totally busy at that time, he contacted William Ross to help him with the score and adapt the HP1 score to the second film as instructed, so that Williams could focus on composing the new themes introduced such as the Chamber of Secrets theme, dobby, spiders, lockhart or most famously Fawkes the Phoenix.
      I would describe the sorcerers stone motif in the second film more of a general motif for "intrigues" and mystery.
      (currently writing my bachelor thesis about the continuity in the film music so I'm currently kind of in a rabbit hole, lol) :P

    Out of all the Harry Potter themes, this one is by far what I loved most. There are a few other themes that liked like: no argument about Hedwig’s Theme because that’s the one that started it all. But I liked Yule ball waltz theme by Patrick Doyle in the Goblet of Fire, Nicholas Hooper’s irrational Umbridge theme in Order of the Phoenix, Hagrid’s medieval theme in Prisoner of Azkaban, as well as A Window to the Past. I didn’t like how other composers created new themes for Voldemort because none of them matches to Williams’ menacing and ruthless approach that describes his character. I liked this theme more than any other theme, and I agree with some of the comments that this 3-note motif closely resembles the 3-note motif in Darth Sideous’ theme in Star Wars. That’s quite a comparison between the both villains in two different franchises.

    "-You're the weak one, and you'll never know love or friendship.-
    Those words made the dark heart of Voldemort break.
    Many years ago, when he was a boy, he loved and was loved, like Harry loved and was loved by his friends.
    With those words, horrible and beautiful memories got back in his mind. Scent of cookies, cloves, sea, the sound of wind and waves. A castle on the sea. A boy who resembled him, dead in his arms. The only person the cruel and heartless Voldemort ever opened his heart and and the only person whom he had shed his tears. The only person he saw as a friend, a brother, not as a minion. The only person who really shared his ideas, not for fear but because he really believed those."
    (the incipit of a story I have in mind, with young Tom Riddle as the main character, describing a little period of light in his life; but both him and his "friend", an OC I created, although main characters, are not on the good side; they're both evil, but not so much; a darker shade of grey, let's say...)

    The problem with the music in this saga has been the same problem as with the directors. Or more specifically one director, the one that would go on to direct most of the movies: David Yates.
    For the Order of Phoenix and Half Blood Prince he brought a guy called Nicholas Hopper. His soundtracks aren't bad, obviously, but they are also not particularly memorable.
    Patrick Doyle and Alexandre Desplat on the other hand did a very good job. Doyle specially created several extraordinary themes.

      You're right, there's an undeniable similarity. Elmer Bernstein seems to be credited with it, I took a look and both he and John Williams (the composer of Voldemort's themes) are associated with the Royal Philharmonic.
      I looked at Bernstein's Wikipedia page and John Williams is among the names mentioned among "those who consider Bernstein a legacy on their careers...". Whatever that means.
      So there's a definite connection between the two and it seems clear the piece you mentioned influenced Williams.
