i really appreciate that you keep the "foot cam" on at all times. SO many people on here only put it up at certain times and not usually at the "right" time. keep up the amazing work!
You really glued me in on the 5 beat on the double pedal. I've played those with my hands alone and they are highly difficult. Your really good at breaking down songs and actually making them sound more interesting once giving a beyond understandable explanation of them.
Dude, I love seeing a drummer who can write things out and explain them on paper. It seems like there are tons of players that lack that these days. There are some great players who can't read music, but it's a good skill to have!
That was an absolutely fantastic explanation and breakdown of what was going on - particularly the quintuplet example. Thanks very much for taking the time to explain it all so clearly!
yeah mate on the transcript i have written i have transcribed that part as close to the actual song as possible. at 0:16 as stated i play the wasy i've seen matt play it live
Very good indeed! Very talented and also really nice to know that you have the skills to transcribe it and understand musically what they are playing. Very impressive.
The displacement of the snare which you pointed out in your pre-cover lesson reminds me of that bit in Buttersnips when the guitar riff goes out of sync with the drums. It's like my favourite Periphery moment ever.
Man your a gun! Nailed it! And I really appreciate how youve also made this an instructional video aswell as a cover.. I love that part in the chorus, but could never really figure it out. Thank you so much!
I really admire you doing this all from sheet music. Im a music major and I know its hard as fuck to stay in place with this difficult of a song. You're awesome dude.
@@voltototo yeah, it's sextuplet. yeah, septuplets should eat a meat. And I was stupid enough to think about writing a piano melody, where the left hand does a triplet then normal, meanwhile righthand plays a septuplet, and it turned out to sound awesome. And i couldn't be much further from having the ability to ever play that. Me and my f-swear ideas.
@formyfor yes becaause you would be using an extra note, the beat would end on the 6th hit instead of the 5th hit so you pretty much would have an extra note and the feeling of the grove would be different
@jerrydilger if you cant read seet music then listen to the song and remember it that way. for me with more difficult and busy drum parts i have to right them out first
There are some times when I want to become a drummer. Then I watch stuff like this, and am completely turned off. I would love to be instantly awesome at poly-rhythms. Keep up the awesome grooves man.
@Ileikdrumzz I write these charts up so i can read and learn the song myself then offer them to others to learn themselves. Ghost notes should occur naturally (generally in between the hats) and to write them in with a bracket around them - () it becomes too messy to read
Even though I'm no fan of Periphery, the drumming is ridiculous! Thanks for the time spent doing the lesson and the transcription and an awesome cover!
you are a scholar and a Djentleman. i didnt think anyone could groove this song like Orbin, but you proved me wrong. fuck yeah for heavy, groovy aussie drummers.
Ohhhh man, that was epic. Loving this channel. I'm loving that you write all the drums out and are planning on posting them! I suck at learning songs by ear so much, more of a visual learner and iv been planning on trying to work out that chorus section for a while but never could be bothered. The lessons included in your vids are soooo helpful too. Few questions: How long have you been playing? Does the hi hat foot pulse come natural? Do you write the music youself? Do you work out? Thanks!
@minibus2010 yeah man, i might not get to an actual cover just now but may transcribe a few and have them on my website. whats songs you thinking mate?
I am glad that someone on here can actually play the difficult songs and isn't just about fast beats and blast beats haha I am going to start putting cover videos up, and you helped me be inspired enough to do so! please grow a beard though :P it would look 100 times more metal!!
so chuffed can now play the icarus lives chorus....the 8th hi hats are the killer i think, but then really helps you learn to split your mind and control each limb! Thanks for doing this! After hours of playing can now play it ! Anyone struggling to play this, keep going, play the simple version first slow, then gradually fast, then add the ghost and slow then fast etc! After a while its so much easier!!
@LukeHollandDrums mate stumbled across your Animals cover! I said to myself 'hang on a minute, isn't this the guy i saw do the like a G6 cover?' haha playing well man. Looking forward to more from you!!!
I love these explanations, can you please please PLEASE do one for Insomnia by Periphery? I've been trying to figure it out for months and am sure a lot of other drummers would appreciate it as much as me.
@rezOnanceUK Great man thanks! Playing for 15 yrs. Yes (there are exercises you can do to help) - in my book (not finished yet). Yes i write all my music in Sibelius. haha
For the part at 6:12 ish, the chorus, I feel like it's easier to think about in 7/8-9/8. You'd learn a rythm in 7/8, then repeat it and add 2/8 extention. What periphery writes is in 4/4, but it seems better to think of it as multimeters that stack up to 4/4, since phrasing is based on those sub meters. Anyway, that's how i think of it.
Another way to think of the second rhythm is that he's placing the groove on top on different parts of the sixteenth notes. First beat, its on "1'. Second beat, it's on "e". Third beat, its on "and". Fourth beat, it's on "uh". Just placing the next accent on the next sixteenth note. In the second measure, the first beat doesn't have an accent then the pattern starts over on the second beat.
You are a phenomenal talent dude! I have no doubt you will be a well respected name in the drum community in the very near future!
this comment aged well.
guess what after ten years he plays for one of the best modern bands periphery predicted the future folks
i really appreciate that you keep the "foot cam" on at all times.
The fluidity with which you drum is so satisfying to watch I'm here at 12:00 at night despite being a bass player. Awesome job, subbed

Mate, you are now the proud owner of the best drum channel on TH-cam.
Dude, you totally NAILED that RLRLR chorus/solo section. Amazing job, however big of an understatement that may be! That was fantastic!
the weird lighting in the thumbmail makes it look as if he's wearing some kind of cucumber mask while plaing, lol =)
MALKton lol
MALKton Yeah, I thought it was shaving foam or something hahah.
Honestly why I clicked on the video lol
I literally thought the same thing lol
Dude what I admire the most is your courage and confidence of putting your iPhone over the drums, fearless of a missed beat over there :D
yeah mate on the transcript i have written i have transcribed that part as close to the actual song as possible. at 0:16 as stated i play the wasy i've seen matt play it live
man, you are so good! truly a pleasure seeing this positivity, this kind of talent and instruction for FREE on the internet!
Very good indeed! Very talented and also really nice to know that you have the skills to transcribe it and understand musically what they are playing. Very impressive.
@Delduked didn't change the song mate. i used the version from icarus ep. there's some more harmonies on that version :P
I really do not like this kind of music, but Matt Halpern is an inspiration. And you sir, are now an inspiration as well. Absolutely incredible.
Its just feels more natural. I find in most grooves or feel my left foot automatically swings on 8ths
The displacement of the snare which you pointed out in your pre-cover lesson reminds me of that bit in Buttersnips when the guitar riff goes out of sync with the drums. It's like my favourite Periphery moment ever.
just bought 3 of your transcriptions,
incredibly accurate, recommended you to my drumming friends.
keep up the good work man!
Man your a gun! Nailed it!
And I really appreciate how youve also made this an instructional video aswell as a cover.. I love that part in the chorus, but could never really figure it out. Thank you so much!
very cool, love the explanations, transcriptions, etc. Excellent work man!
I love how you made your set up into one more like Matt's just for this video
I really admire you doing this all from sheet music. Im a music major and I know its hard as fuck to stay in place with this difficult of a song. You're awesome dude.
@raiotinfamigold all remo: clear emperors on toms (top) ambassadors (bottoms) coasted emperor on snare and a powerstroke 3 on the kick
I can't believe this quintuplet business. How you got it is truly a wander through time and space. Great job.
It's just like triplets but with 5 notes per beat instead of 3. Some people play them rlrll but for double bass alternate each stroke. Rlrlr lrlrl
+Michael Mischko I agree. They sound/look a lot harder than they really are.
@@voltototo yeah, it's sextuplet. yeah, septuplets should eat a meat. if matt can't play anymore for any reasons.... YOU ARE THE MAN!
Your playing is so tight yet so relaxed, so glad I'm subscribed.
They're actually set up somewhere in the middle mate. All the setting are listed at the gear page of my website wrightdrums
this video makes me cry on how talented this guy is.
Hey man! Your an amazing drummer! All of the videos I have watched so far (by you) are amazing!!!
@alex164 its a 16" stagg. 19" sabian paragon is the other one. thanks
Thanks for checking it out man!
5a's in this video mate. I use 757's now (like a 5b but thicker head) all that info is on my gear page
@formyfor yes becaause you would be using an extra note, the beat would end on the 6th hit instead of the 5th hit so you pretty much would have an extra note and the feeling of the grove would be different
You have sheet music for this stuff is the sole reason I can learn them. Thank you so much.
THIS NEEDS A BILLION VIEWS!
Decided to plug in guitar... and play over this.
GREAT backing, gets more of a live feeling.
Man, your ghost notes are awesome !
nice was struggling with that chorus a bit but got it now just needed to see someone doing it
You're an incredible teacher. Keep up the good work.
@jerrydilger if you cant read seet music then listen to the song and remember it that way. for me with more difficult and busy drum parts i have to right them out first
@Spacecowboyy i write it myself. will be available from my website soon. cheers mate
There are some times when I want to become a drummer. Then I watch stuff like this, and am completely turned off. I would love to be instantly awesome at poly-rhythms. Keep up the awesome grooves man.
@FakeMessiah94 yeah mate some of the site is getting rebuilt. like the facebook page in the description and ill announce when its back online. Cheers
@Ileikdrumzz I write these charts up so i can read and learn the song myself then offer them to others to learn themselves. Ghost notes should occur naturally (generally in between the hats) and to write them in with a bracket around them - () it becomes too messy to read
DUDE! your such a good drummer and teahcer please do more videos ! they help so much!
beautiful song and really awesome cover!!!! great job!
Awesome video! I sort of wish the sound of your drums were the ones tracked for the original track. They sound great man!
Once you get limb separation down, the constant 8th notes help tremendously with the timing of the odd timed accents.
Dude this is so helpful!!! Thank you so much for uploading - the score is super useful too. Spot on man!
A very nice lesson dude. Troy Wright - You are right !
You should seriously consider doing Erised!!! The drums before the Petrucci solo are awesome!
Ohhhh man, that was epic. Loving this channel. I'm loving that you write all the drums out and are planning on posting them! Thanks alot from that 1st Beat Breakdown notes! It helped me a lot to practice this song!
@minibus2010 yeah man, i might not get to an actual cover just now but may transcribe a few and have them on my website. whats songs you thinking mate?
You are truly awesome. I wish you were in the states and you could be my drum instructor. Thanks for all the awesome videos.
I am glad that someone on here can actually play the difficult songs and isn't just about fast beats and blast beats haha I am going to start putting cover videos up, and you helped me be inspired enough to do so! please grow a beard though :P it would look 100 times more metal!!
sick man, definitely added to subscriptions. I have much to learn from you.

Same for me, it's good to watch a lot of cover videos!
I'm guitarist but I also play drums, even if I don't have a kit!!
Subbed, great job on this one, looking forward to more awesome covers!

Great Job Dude, Good Technique! How cold they even dislike this???
would love to see you cover volumes. anything they do frankly!
that reference snare sure is a beauty
@lyosiris wow what an amazing player! he used to play with periphery right?
@BenStormonthMusic Hey Ben, im using Westone UM2's here. I use sensaphonics now.. Check out 1964 ears man way cheaper
you're insane mate, extremely talented.
id like to see a Tesseract cover/lesson. that would be really cool.
flawless dude! very impressive
I have to say, I'm really looking forward to the sheet music for this piece.
So tight and clean, You're amazing!
Thanks Troy this is awesome! Time to Practice!
Geezus, you explain everything so clearly.
I just can't get those ghost notes down >.<
I love these explanations, can you please please PLEASE do one for Insomnia by Periphery? I've been trying to figure it out for months and am sure a lot of other drummers would appreciate it as much as me.
OMG Another epic song you have done!
@belsebub19 haha yeah my house mate begged me to leave it in. we were in tears lol
@rezOnanceUK Great man thanks! Playing for 15 yrs. Yes (there are exercises you can do to help) - in my book (not finished yet). Yes i write all my music in Sibelius. haha
Good guy Troy, using the EP version 😄
LOVE THAT SNARE!
it's incredibly hard to get quintuplets even (especially double bass); syncronized, and sounding natural. you fucking pull it off gorgeously.
For the part at 6:12 ish, the chorus, I feel like it's easier to think about in 7/8-9/8. You'd learn a rythm in 7/8, then repeat it and add 2/8 extention. @PentucketXC05 Haha well said mate. I do agree! Cobus is becoming a better and more mature player by the day! He is the creator of his success!
Amazing drummerrrr :D..good job troy :D
Could you do buggle call by buddy rich?
Great cover mate : ) might want to up the compression on the snare to bring those tasty ghost notes out.
kinda felt the snare is mixed too soft, but this is the best drum video I've ever watched! subbed!
Great video man! really helped me understand this song!! :D
