    My favorite gymnast! This floor exercise routine is excellent! Wish today's artistic gymnasts had more presence, grace, and incorporated dance into their choreography.

    I'm with Beth.
    When I think gymnastics, I think of Podkopayeva.

    honestly she was kindve Robbed of her AA glory, because she deserved a lot more attention than what the US crowd gave her.

      No she wasn't. She was applauded appropriately at the end of the competition and during the medal ceremony. The competition was still going and they didn't seed the top gymnasts in the same rotation by ranking the way they do now. Svetlana Khorkina (one of the other favorites) was also competing on bars (and had a major fall) at the same time Podkopayeva was on floor (hence the gasp in the middle of her routine). You also had 3 Americans in the competition during all of this (back when the rules allowed for that), so there were a lot of distractions going on all at the same time. In this competition, it was Lilia Podkopayeva, Svetlana Khorkina, Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes, Lavinia Milosevic, Simona Amanar, and Gina Gogean who were all the co-favorites to win. You also had dark horses like Dominique Moceanu, Dina Kotchetkova, and Roza Galieva. People were guessing the entire time and eyes were everywhere because nobody knew who was going to win. This was a very competitive era where you had 6 or 7 gymnasts all vying for a gold medal, unlike today where you pretty much know it's going to be Simone Biles and all eyes are on her.

    She's the only girl I've ever seen that did a front handspring to a front flip flop to a skill!! All the girls I've seen do a front handspring right to the skill of a front whipover to the ending skill

    Lilia is my all time favorite gymnast, she's even more incredible as a human being so much so that I would feel completely unworthy in her presence , a must watch is a video called "Tatyana Ramus- interview with Olympic Champion Lilia Podkopayeva" (Russian w/ English subtitles)

    Dina Kochetkova, Shannon Miller, and the rest of them who were doing well in the circuits just failed in the Olympics. Lilia just picked up. Her and Onodi.

      @shushunovafan4301 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Eh Liukin is a prime example of someone who gets a free pass for artistry because of her lovely lines. A case could be made on beam, but on floor her dance isn't really dance, just posing.

    How is Podkopayeva her idol and has wayyyyyyyyyy different type of gymnastics? The artistry level doesn't come close...

    • @choustonlv
      @choustonlv 10 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Darling, you're missing the point - it's about inspiring people! You don't have to be a cookie cutter version of your idol to dream.

    • @kittysha5003
      @kittysha5003 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know she doesn't have to be the exact copy but I still find this mind baffling LOL
      But achieving this level of artistry wouldn't make her "cookie cutter version" either.
