EdBwoy, thank you for making this video, very good insight. I do wish that my current issues were as simple as a messy pour lol. I do have a bit of a story that I want to share with you and would love to get your feedback. I have a 2005 FX45 with the VK45DE motor. In October of 2020 I paid for a motor to replace my OEM one because "something dislodged from the cylinder wall and got jammed into the spark plug" and left it unusable. After taking possession of my car again it felt solid, responsive, and strong. However on the 25th of December the car lost all power on the highway and the engine seized while I was pulling over. Upon taking it back the shop that worked on it, they said the engine had spun a bearing. They convinced me that the reason that happened was because they had reused my old valve covers from my OEM motor and the seals on them had let oil into the spark plug tubes. This statement didn't sit right with me because I was convinced the motor would have come as a complete package and not without valve covers. On January 7th they called an explained they sourced a different motor fromthe same retailer since the motor was covered under a warranty. On that call the manager mentioned that I should really consider replacing my valve covers on the new motor because they were still the set from my OEM motor and they are getting old and they are not serviceable. Naturally I told him I wasn't ready to pay for anything additional (New valve cover installation quoted at $1,020) as I had just spent 9.4k on the installation of the last motor. He said that was fine, but he felt the need to tell me, as he wouldn't want to see me return for any additional issues. on January 9th I went to pick up the car from the garage. When I arrived to the garage I asked to speak with the manager that I typically deal with, but of course he was not there that day and instead I spoke to the mechanic. My intention was to find out what had been done to the seals to prevent any future leakage, and he said that nothing was really done because they are not serviceable and would require either OEM replacements or aftermarket serviceable valve covers. Similar to what the manager that called me had said. Instead he recommended I come back in half the time of a regular oil change (1500 miles) to check on the seals. He even said which cylinders specifically were the ones to worry about. Meaning the supposed valve covers with leaking seals were still installed on my motor. (Assuming any leaking seals actually exist) On the 11th I returned the car to the shop after driving it for less than 80 miles. During those 80 miles I experienced some jerking while slowing down at a light (the rpm gauge was jumping between 3k and 6k while decelerating to a stop light.), a rattle coming from under the car at 5100k to 6100k rpms in every gear, and some annoying mechanical fan noise, and there was some lag with the throttle too. All issues that didn't exist on the OEM or the Second motor configuration. I inspected the motor a bit more before taking it back and came to the conclusion that they lied to me about reusing my old valve covers. (Which never made sense to me to begin with.) The motor that is currently installed has markings that resemble inventory numbers from the retailer that the motor was purchased from. I realized that the entire motor had the same blue paint markings all around, meaning the valve covers that were installed had to have come with that motor as a complete package. To support that idea I consulted my dash camera, and not to my surprise, I noticed the motor they had just taken out sitting with a set of valve covers installed as well. That validated the idea that there were multiple sets of valve covers. Valve cover sets that rightfully should be mine as I purchased a complete working motor, and seemingly twice if you consider the motor that was sourced to replace the one that spun the bearing. Upon returning the car I requested a receipt of the motor that I purchased, and they claim that they never share receipts like that. When in reality I just wanted something concrete that ties my purchase of the engine to the retailer in case anything may come of these issues with the shop. I brought up how ridiculous it was that the covers were reused and how it was the cause of the second motor's spun bearing. This is where the manager I typically deal with contradicted the case and said that it wasn't the cause of the spun bearing. But to my knowledge loss of oil pressure is exactly how that happens. Especially since there was no leak, and no oil spill from underneath the car. I left the car at the shop with the intention of having those issues I noted resolved and new valve covers installed on their dime as they had recommended that I replace them, only after they had supposedly been used on two motors. He said that they would look into getting new valve covers. (This is a request I made knowing that the valve covers that are currently equipped match the warrantied motor.) Why would they say that they are reusing my old valve covers, when I am in fact not? How do they expect me to believe I've had 3 different motors in the car but I'm still using my original valve covers. Perhaps the manager that warned me about the leaking spark plug tube seals was trying to sell me those to offset the money they weren't making while my car was having warranty work done in their bay. But it's very clear there is some miscommunication or deception going on. So far it's been a week since I returned the car with my little list of issues and I have not heard from them. They are unaware that I know the valve covers currently equipped belong to that engine and that I am not still using my OEM valve covers with the leaking spark plug tube seals as they claim. I am both excited and nervous to see what's to come when they call me back to pick up the car. What is your take on this?
In summary, the shop is either incompetent or at worst, they are pushing dishonest practices. Valve covers don't have a direct line to killing engines. Rod bearings are usually affected by neglecting oil maintenance. Thats why on every engine I buy (warranties or not), I woukd start by inspecting the bottom end. I've had a string of bad engines from a particular vendor in the past, so you might have just been suffering bad luck. On valve covers, I don't understand their fascination with replacing them. I have checked some VCs with almost 200k on them, and their tube seals were fine. There's a video I made last year on that, but basically I reuse them based on condition regardless of mileage. However, you should be careful not to damage the seals during re-installation of the rocker covers after replacing the VC gasket. In almost always replace that gasket when replacing an engine because access to them with the engine installed is tough. Is it possible that they actually caused damage and are pointing it out to you in an indirect way - the kind of damage that would be fixed by you buying new valve covers?
@@EdBwoy I suppose it's possible they're trying to get me to cover something they may have damaged. But personally I don't know what type of damage could be done to warrant replacement VC's. At least from the outside the valve covers look perfectly fine.
@@LuminantDubstep it baffles me too. I would have guessed the tube seals getting damaged, but then again it doesn't seem like there was any sign of an attempt to replace them, right? Check the bolts and see if any of them seem exceptionally clean.
Great stuff. I just had my '97 f250 misfire and loose power because I spilled oil on the coil adjacent to the oil fill neck . I'm searching for the best method to clean the area when I ran across your video. Thank you
Still going strong. I'm doing a little maintenance to get it back on the road ready for the next 100,000 miles. Oil consumption has been steady at half a quart per 5,000 miles.
Owners manual, depends on how hard U ride Transmission flush trabsfer case dif flush radiator flush change ur spark plugs oil change n filter etc etc bleed ur brakes
Yup! Just like get money says, repetitive routine maintenance on the fluids. And then I address things as they fail. This month, I'm doing the spark plugs, brakes and suspension. I might do an oil change in the spring. Some of these are things I do regularly at different times, not just waiting for a certain mileage to do it.

Maybe it's just about time to address it. Thankfully, the OEM ones have shown that they can last for a pretty long time.

Was it easy to change the spark plugs and coils?
Coil packs are quite easily accessible, but the rear spark plugs can get a little tricky as you need to use various extensions to get in the space.
Only issue I have is a little blue smoke on startup

Start with the PCV valves for the startup smoke. I recommend OEM replacement.
