  • Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer have a long history of competing against each other in professional golf. However, their respective styles of play don't necessarily match, as noted by NBC.

    • @It__From__Bit
      @It__From__Bit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@swisstrader It's because only a tiny fraction of people in the "west" even understand the concept of training you mind. Probably the best example I've seen of a golfer with a trained mind it Patrick Cantlay. He says he goes into a kind of zone at the beginning of each round and doesn't come out of it until the end of the round. I don't know if this is something he has trained himself to do via meditation or he naturally has this kind of "tune-out switch" in his mind that allows him to block everything out but the task at hand.
      Remember his round with Bryson Dechambeau? He didn't care in the slightest that Bryson "snapped" at him because he was walking during Bryson's shot., although it seemed to get most everyone else all riled up. And they weren't even the ones being "yelled" at. And Bryson is a notoriously slow player. But if you watched Patrick on the greens while Bryson was taking a long time to line up each putt during the whole round, you could tell that it didn't disrupt his "zone" in the slighted. He just stood there in a kind of meditative state, patiently waiting until it was his turn to putt. Now that's a trained mind, which is a massive advantage in a sport like golf. Having a trained mind allows the player to remain focused on their task without letting ANYTHING on the outside disrupt that focus. Cheers.

      KingSadim ... a halfway agree. But, definitely some freedom to make sure every shot is the best. Don't forget, Langer is one of the best in the world, even in his younger days.... Montgomery has always been known for his speedier tempo. But there ARE other players who take forever, and still screw up the shot. For me being a weekend warrior, if I don't have the shot in my head in 30 seconds, I never will... so I just enjoy the errant shot. And I always try gentlemanly actions on the course, so if my group is slower, then we stop and let others play thru. But then, in suck so bad... gentlemanly is all I've got.

This would make it a 4 1/2 hour round. So every time you were at a tee box it should be the same tee time. Langer is an analytical golfer, almost never shows emotion on the course. Nicklaus was like that in his early years. He could actually stand over a putt for 45 seconds before drawing the putter back. Very cerebral player, absolutely never rushed any shot his entire career, even in a practice round, amazing. I remember Johnny Miller being amazed playing with Jack in a practice round before the 1966 US Open at Olympic that his pre shot routine. was the same as it was in competition.

      What Jack did do though was to walk fast between shots which helped cut down, to some degree, his overall time between shots. But when he got settled in over a shot his mind was able to block out everything. His level of concentration was greater than anyone who ever played the game, before or since, according to Arnold Palmer.

When a slow player in a group is being watched, he will noticeably pick up the pace. When a fast player is being observed, and during a moment of indecision (ie the wind changes). The faster player will be hit with a slow play penalty. This happen to Morgan Pressel, when she was in a match play tournament against Munoz.

    One day I witnessed a group at my local course, that all 4 of them were slow and deliberate on the greens. Never saw anything like it, before, or since then. Literally 10-20 minutes on each green, plum bobbing, looking from all angles multiple times, marking, remarking.....they all acted on each putt like it was a putt to win the Masters. It took them like 4 hours for 9 holes.

      Our group of four were waiting ton the 1st tee to hit our tee shots and it literally took 20 minutes after our tee time was called. I called the pro on my phone to complain, he comes out on our approach shots and we stood there for a good 15 more minutes. She said, just tee off on 10 and I'll have a talk with them.

      Was once in between a fast group and a slow group and it was one of the funniest things I’ve seen on a golf course, albeit not conducive to a relaxing round. We let the fast group play through while we were waiting for the group ahead AGAIN and the fast group hit their drives straight into them. One of the slow guys shouted at them and one of the guys in the fast group shouted “GET THE F$&@ OF THE FAIRWAY!!!” and there was an altercation. Terrible behaviour all round but very funny nonetheless.

    Every golf game has a rhythm of it's own, you have to find the rhythm and fit in. Monte in this case needs to slow his play down, take his time and enjoy his round. I like Monte, and hate slow play, but getting upset about it will not help his game.

  • @toothspic2

    Funny the majority of the people that are accused of slow play lead the fields in all aspects of scoring. For example in this case, Langer lead the field in greens hit and strokes gained putting. Colin...53rd greens hit....71st strokes gained putting. People only complain about slow play when they are playing bad and a group member is playing good. It's an ego thing.

    Gary Koch commenting that Monty should know what to expect when playing with Langer. It's as if it's Monty's fault and he should just learn to deal with it, rather than expect Langer to pick up the pace. I HATE slow play, both watching and playing.
