  • Houseplants add instant comfort to any home. I love ferns indoors because they don’t need full sun!

Staghorn ferns are a unique fern. They like lower or medium light and moderate moisture. In their natural habitat, they're epiphytic, meaning they grow in trees. To mimic this way of growing, they can be mounted and hung up!
    What you'll need:
    - 4” or 6” potted staghorn fern
    - mounting board
    - 8 stainless steel nails
    - 12 lb gauge fishing line
    - potting soil
    - sheet moss
    Here's the process:
    - Soak the moss in water and set aside.
    - On the mounting board, trace a circle two inches larger than the staghorn pot. Evenly hammer the nails around the circle.
    - Remove the staghorn from the container and place it in the center of the circle. Break up the root ball so the plant sits against the mounting board easily. Add or remove soil to make sure all the roots are covered around the edges.
    - Squeeze excess water from the moss and lay over the soil to completely cover.
    - Knot the fishing line around one nail. Make crisscross patterns with the fishing line until the moss and fern feel secure. Knot off the exposed end of the fishing line.
    Other notes:
    - If you're hanging the fern outside, place in a shaded location out of direct wind.
    - The fern wants moderate moisture, but allow to dry out slightly between waterings.
    - Fertilize once a month with all-purpose fertilizer!

I have a massive Stag Horn Fern growing on a Liquid Amber tree. It started out a little bigger than yours.
Has no soil. I used to feed it chopped up banana skins when it was a baby.
These ferns really do get huge!

Staghorn and elk horn grow everywhere in the wild on the island I live on in Queensland, but I’m going to try mounting a couple to a wall of my house. Thanks for the video.
PS. They don’t grow in moss here

Dirt is what you get under your fingernails. Soil is what nurtures plants. Love the wall mounted fern!

I have a very large stag horn and was wondering if you could do a video on splitting it up. I would love to make small ones like you did but don’t want to kill the mother. Thanks!

Here in Florida we just throw it up in a branch and wrap Spanish moss around it, like we do our orchids.

The plant you’re mounting is not a Staghorn, it’s an Elkhorn.
