Is there not a top and bottom to the plant according to how it grows? What about adding organic matter or slow release fertilizer to feed the plant over time?
So the fern has to have the proper orientation on the board to grow correctly. Pretty sure you actually have more than 1 fern mounted on your board. You want the plant shield fronds to be with the newest shield growing in at the top. So look for the newest frond and that needs to be at 12 o'clock. It's best to cut a round circle out of the board about 3" round in the middle of the board where your root ball will be. You then cover it with mesh. This gives the fern air circulation. Secure that with staples. Moss goes on the bottom so the roots have something to take in moisture. Otherwise the wood will pull all the water out of the fern roots. So it goes mesh, sphagnum moss, then a bark mix ( orchid mix), then take an empty bag for loose leaf tea bag and fill it with a slow release fertilizer like Osmocote . Lay that on the orchid bark. Then more sphagnum moss then set the fern on and cover with sphagnum moss. It's best to use clear fish line so it won't rot or show. You don't want your fern to come crashing down off the wood as it gets heavier .💚🌿🪴🍀🌵🌱🍃
Love your aesthetic. Watched your ikea cabinet build about 40 times before I built mine. Thank you for sharin your awesome design eye with us strangers :)
I've been wanting to replace my staghorn fern. It has 1 leaf lol & was kept in the bathroom, but I forgot about it. I literally looked at one today. So definitely going back to get it👍🏾
This has been my favorite staghirn mount! Love the fact that it already has a hanger and it looks perfect....I really am going to try the polished board!
Beautiful! I’m trying this 🥹😍 just ordered my Stag, my question is how did you hang it? I have dry wall so I think if I only used a nail it’ll plop right off 😅
What other type of plant would you recommend mounting like this? I would love to create a display of different ones. Thanks for the tutorial. Looks so easy!
I’ve been reading a lot that staghorns shouldn’t have direct sunlight on their leaves or they’ll burn. However, I am desperately wanting to make one of these and place it on a wall in my kitchen with an East window next to it (no shades/blinds). What is your experience with this? Do you think it’ll be okay with some morning sunlight touching the leaves? Thanks!

So glad you enjoyed it! Can’t wait for you to try!
I heard the fern has a top side and this is the part that should be facing toward the ceiling when mounted. I could never figure it out
Interesting! I hadn’t heard that, I’ll need to look into it!

I would say Orchids as they also grow mounted on trees in nature
A Rabbit's foot fern would be great as well!
