Trying to FIX a Water Damaged Nintendo Switch Joy-Con

  • Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to repair a faulty Nintendo Switch Joy-Con which has water damage.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

I love your videos as always, I'm a driver where I have to use my car daily. I know very little about cars, but I learn by doing. When it breaks and learn by doing. I watch your you tube videos, and you have helped me massively with electronics when it comes to my son's gaming consoles. I have the confidence that you exude, I'm gonna fix it, if I brake it I've tried and a professional will take over. But so far I've saved a lot of money. Your passion, confidence that you have instilled me makes me spend more money on my boys at Christmas than unnecessary repairs.

You know Vince, I've got multiple sclerosis and my hands became pretty much useless for anything requiring precision (and I was not the sharpest tool in the shed before the sickness for that matter). You can't imagine the amount of envy I felt when I watched you soldering on that damn tiny ribbon cable :D Great work man! It is rather sad that you didn't make much money on it this time. But the most important thing is that it won't end up in the garbage and for that I thank you!

I have actually done JoyCon repair, managed to break the battery connector on mine when trying to apply the foam fix, since I assumed the battery connector pulled out, not up, thinking it just attached directly to pins on the board and not realizing it was actually in two parts, and I didn't have a parts tray so I managed to knock some screws onto the floor that were forever lost. Turned out getting replacement parts for JoyCons wasn't easy, so I scoured eBay for a faulty left JoyCon for months until I found one that was reasonably priced, paid about as much as you and the only thing wrong with it was a faulty stick click, got a good deal on that I think. I did eventually get the foam fix done and did a shell swap as well and now I know not to assume anything when disassembling electronics I'm not familiar with. That was only my third time disassembling something, but I think I learned a lot from it and I feel more comfortable disassembling things now, plus I have much better tools now.

The reason one button has to be pressed hard is there's corrosion underneath the flexible contact that bends to click. With things like this where the button surface cannot be exposed, sometimes you have to soak it for a period of time - perhaps in vinegar for 30 mins first, then IPA for a few hours. But in this case as you found, you can just peel off the buttons from the PCB surface. That same "soak" technique might have worked on the analogue stick too.
With regards to that broken trace on the ribbon - as you spotted it joins to the pad next to it. What I would do here is find the corresponding pins on the socket using connectivity test on your meter, and join the pins somewhere on the main PCB instead of trying to alter the flex ribbon. The alternative might be to use conductive paint to try and join those two pads together, but depending on how the ribbon goes into the socket it might not be reliable. Soldering on flex ribbons like that can be super difficult and most of the time the thing will get worse!

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks Chris. Yes when I watched this video back today before putting it 'live' I was annoyed at myself for not using the Maplins contact cleaner stuff I have on the analogue stick. This was actually filmed a couple of months ago but I didn't get round to putting it on TH-cam. The 2nd ribbon cable I did where I just showed the remains of it went very badly, the soldering iron was just lifting more and more pads until I had to give up!!!

Just a quick tip for water damaged items. I've done this quite a few times, mostly in BT controllers and keyboards. Once I took a bought a totally gone £70 BT keyboard back to life.
Take out the pcb and fully submerse in 99% isopropyl alc. Leave for at least 3 hours. For corrosion use a tooth brush lightly on effected areas. Let it dry overnight.
For really bad boards use white spirit, soaked for 2 hours minimum. Rinse with distilled water then leave over night.
Of course damaged flex and interconnects need replacing.
PS, really into your clips Mr vince. As a kid I had free roam on electronics. My little hobby was picking up hifi separates and fixing them. Like you I've slowly worked my way up. Far from a pro but using my cheapo soldering station, a £17 936D I've got up to replacing smd and building small tht&smd hobby boards.
Feels really great once assembled, kinda like airfix.

I enjoy your vids, your like an average Joe who likes to tinker with stuff and learn as you go along. With enough experience up your sleeves you tend to get the idea on how stuff works and do your own repairs. I enjoy repairing things myself, at times it would be cheaper just buying it brand new but the experience you get, money cant buy. So next time when something is wrong with it, then you'll kinda know where to look and fix yourself.

Great vid, vince!. it doesn't help when people sell water damaged items months after being damaged!.... Making peoples repair more work. I'd say that controller was water damaged a few months back as the residual looks well at home. Oxidation can occur fast but that's definitely been water damaged for a while. Rule of thumb never handle items that have been water damaged bare hands as you never know where it fell in 👍

Hello Vince. Nice video. I also do repairs as well, my channel is iRepair iDevices. Just a friendly suggestion, when you are working on those flex cables, I would recommend getting ahold of some thin speaker wire 40 gauge. It would help to attach broken traces. When you drag your soldering iron and solder, you run the risk of burning the flex cable and possibly lift the traces or cause bridging. Also to test if you have bridged and solder joints together, you could use a volt meter in continuity mode with fine tips, this would help you determine if traces were connected together or not. Lastly if you continue want to work with tiny components get yourself a fine soldering tip. Keep up the great work! Lisa from Illinois

@@TheCrystalGlow Depends what you use. I've successfully used a conductive pen (micro tip) from Cicuitworks, part number - CW220MTP - never had a problem with the repairs done with it either. It's not cheap though. Also, if the tip of the pen is too wide just blob a tiny amount onto a surface and apply some of it with a fine needle.

    • @andyfairman7812

M Jons - Yes, I've had pretty good luck with those pens as well. I've fixed several keyboard traces with those pens (the traces that go bad on the plastic film layers). Very small currents. A needle might have worked for applying it on the ribbon cable. It sure is a small area to work though...

New subscriber here, enjoying this trying to fix videos. Please let us know the quality of the joystick over the time. My left joycon moves my itself and I have cleaned it, reset them, update it, and even put a sticky thing on the antenna and nothing has worked :(

GECKO M at this point I suggest setting up a repair with nintendo because you said you tried everything and it didn’t work so you probably should send it in

I would be careful using your fiberglass cleaning pin on anymore small traces.

You don't clean water damage just with alcohol.
First you clean it with deionized/distilled water, then with alcohol, preferably submerged in it for a while.

It would definitely be worth it if it was a special edition one, but it’s not worth it for a normal one as you can get new ones for not much more.

For the water damaged probably means that it got wet but he knows that it didn't kill it right away, and for the buttons I've had that same exact problem all of the a buttons on my DS's I've never fixed it but I imagine it's the membrane underneath.
They've never completely stopped working even though the a button is the most important button it's never bothered me enough to fix it.
