Z Reviews I've had a similar experience. I have a Marantz AV7705 processor running into Emotiva amps for a 7.1 setup and I've been very disappointed with how much sound comes out of the side and rear channels, to the point that I'm considering just running a 3.1 setup. However, when I go to the theatre, they have all kinds of sound coming from the surrounds. How do you think they are doing this at the theatre? Are they getting a better audio track than we are on our blu rays or do you think they are just altering it?

If you still have that setup, what you really are/were looking for is the Auro-Matic feature. The specs page lists it as the last supported audio codec. I have a Marantz SR8015 in the living room with the Auro-3D 9 speaker layout / Atmos 5.1.4 format with the heights laser aligned to seating positions due to OCD. Auro-Matic takes content in whatever format it is in; DTS, DD, DD+, Atmos, even stereo, and converts it to Auro-3D. It will use the height speakers a lot, and it does a very good job with most (90%) content. There is an Auro-Matic setting from 1 to 16 that allows you to tune the affect. Set properly, the LRC and front heights have the front stage floating in the room sounding like it is coming from a few feet in front of your face at screen level. If you have the setting too high, some content will have random audio that should be in front of you sounding like it is above you or sometimes almost slightly mixed with the backs. Setting it to 14 keeps that from happening in my environment which is about 7.5ft viewing distance. During the day, my wife watches regular FIOS TV content like HGTV. It uses the height speakers and sounds great. Also, 85 to 90% of content in native Atmos sounds better in Auro-3D. Atmos content in Atmos sounds good. But you can clearly hear things moving between speakers. The average person, if blindfolded, would be able to point directly at my height speakers in Atmos mode. Where with Auro-3D sounds blend better and subtle sounds come from areas/angles where viewers are not even sure if the sounds are in the content, in the house, or coming from outside at times.

i get my Atmos fix by going outside during a thunderstorm with a blunt and settle down and listen to the reverb trail from thunder claps , lightshow and immersive natural sound. my wife has problems with just two Q speaker towers in the main room, there is no way she would go along with another 5, 7 or 11 speakers in that space.

Atmos movies that really leverage the format:
Ready Player One (locked to top-middle but amazing sound mix)
Jupiter Ascending (the chase through the city at night is a standout)
Gravity (one of the most dynamic uses of Atmos. Sounds can come from anywhere)
Godzilla v Kong (Kaijus fighting. Of course)
A Quiet Place (very atmospheric. Not bombastic but ambient sounds everywhere)
Any war movie (I like the plane wreck scene in Overlord)
Mission Impossible Fallout (several scenes make heavy use of Atmos)
300 (fight in the shade scene. The entire ceiling is filled with the sound of flights of arrows. It would sound AMAZING with 6 ceiling channels)
Baby Driver (pay attention to when he puts headphones on)
Spiderman Far From Home (the scene where Mysterio is messing with Spidey's head. His voice comes from everywhere)
Its all about the specific movie. Most mixers arent using Atmos effectively in the movies. The format is fantastic. The mixers need to catch up.

  • @astrotrance

The problem with Atmos is it may be object-based but literally everyone in the sound design process still treats it as if it's channel based.

    • @Microwave414
      @Microwave414 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yeah, that's basically it and why I think for games it's great if impractical for most. Games especially PC ones have been treating sound as object based since at least the 90's when games became 3d, even EAX had rudimentary support for height objects even if it was meant in a HRTF sort of way. One day someone will make an emulator of sorts for EAX that can translate it to window's spatial container so then it can be played via atmos or DTS-X on the pc.

100% agree. I’ve been doing surround since the 80’s, and despite new formats, the software hasn’t significantly improved. Auro was first out, and its speaker layout is consistent with how humans actually hear (we’re relatively insensitive to sound above and behind). As of now, I believe the best option is to setup according to Auro specs and use the Auromatic upmixer on Atmos and DTS:X mixes. This makes the investment in surround sound and speakers worthwhile and significantly improves the experience of nearly any movie.

Asking for rca jacks on this product is really a huge sign just how much this is not your cup of tea, I say that with all due respect, I love your reviews. I'm in the market for the RMC-1 from emotiva and a major selling point was that it had only XLR outputs for my 9.2.6 home theater. At a certain point you don't fit the equipment to the room, you build the room around the equipment.

There are a few things about Atmos that hurt my brain at first. Some of which are likely true of DTS-X as well...
With Atmos (at home), most Blu Ray releases are mixed to have 7 "ear level" speakers (plus LFE), using TrueHD to compress those channels losslessly.
Atmos itself is just an extra substream of metadata added to the TrueHD stream.
(older non-Atmos receivers simply ignore that extra substream.)
Originally, I thought Atmos releases would include maybe two full extra channels of audio along with the 7.1 mix.
But no, the bandwidth for the metadata is tiny. It doesn't contain *any* actual audio data at all, AFAIK.
So that means ALL of the audio you're hearing in the Atmos height channels originated in bed (ear level) channels.
Which in turn means - Atmos is essentially a fancy "panning algorithm" that selectively pans audio from the original bed channels into the height channels.
The metadata contains info such as X,Y,Z position, but it has to make some compromises with how much it can try to separate the "objects" from the original mix.
(there are probably some clever things they can do to extract specific sounds from the bed channels, because they are losslessly encoded/decoded, therefore they can do certain mathematical operations such as subtraction on the audio with no quality loss.)
The metadata also has some parameters such as the "spread" of each object, which to me suggests it just means how much it spreads the sound between multiple surround speakers, vs trying to confine it more to the nearest speaker (vs the X,Y,Z coords for the object.)
I only just got an Atmos setup as well recently, using an older Onkyo TX-RZ800 receiver, and only two height channels on the front wall atm. I have some other speakers on the way, so I can put them on the ceiling. The Onkyo can only decode 7 channels, but I'm working on something to decode 11.
From what I've heard so far, Atmos (and probably DTS-X) also uses some HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function) stuff to whizz the sounds around your noggin more realistically. Or maybe *not* so realistically, depending on who you speak to. lol
Atmos definitely adds some extra depth to movies, but the mixes on most Blu Rays has been a bit disappointing so far.
Some movies barely use the height channels at all, even when the action on the screen suggests it should.

    • @electronash
      @electronash 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Something they do with TrueHD is quite clever...
(please don't take all of this as gospel. There will be a few mistakes / assumptions.)
The initial output from a TrueHD decoder is nothing more than raw uncompressed audio.
(usually 48KHz 24-bit on most Blu Ray disks, IIRC? Or is it only 16-bit, I can't remember? lol)
But, to make it easier for TVs and sound bars to decode things, the 1st and 2nd streams in a TrueHD stream often contain a Stereo (or Pro-Logic) downmix of the whole 7.1 surround mix.
The 3rd and 4th streams might contain say the Left Surround and Right Surround channels.
A receiver (or processor) can then subtract the L/R Surround channel audio from the Pro-Logic mix of the 1st and 2nd streams.
That will give you a 4.0 surround mix, leaving the phantom center in the front L/R.
They can do that with very little processing power, and no quality loss, since the audio is uncompressed / lossless.
The 5th and 6th streams might contain say the Center and LFE channels.
The receiver can then subtract the Center channel audio from the front L/R mix, giving a 5.1 surround mix.
(LFE is either mixed with the front channels, or sent to the sub, depending on the bass management settings.)
I thought that was quite a neat way of doing things, as it makes it far easier for cheaper devices to decode a 4.0 or 5.1 mix from a TrueHD stream, and it saves on bandwidth by not needing a separate stream for Pro-Logic vs discrete.
(the 7th and 8th streams will generally contain the audio for the Surround Back channels, with the 9th stream containing the metadata for Atmos etc.)

    • @FURognar
      @FURognar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The technology is quite sound. It works very well as Zeos found out with the Atmos and DTSX demos. But yes, the sound mixes themselves can be very lackluster.
Some directors dont even want to work with Atmos (Chris Nolan, looking at you)
      Other directors want minimal Atmos.
Then there are sound mixers who lock their Atmos mixes to 7.1.2 or 7.1.4 channels, effectively depriving those with higher channel counts from a full Atmos experience (9.1.6 becoming standard with preamps)
Hopefully sound mixers will get a clue and directors will finally unleash them to create phenomenal mixes. But we arent there yet.

I only just got around to building the first FPGA / DSP board prototype this week.
It has the same Cirrus DSP as in my Onkyo TX-RZ800, which is part of the reason I bought (and repaired) the Onkyo in the first place. lol
I haven't yet got the decoding working on the Cirrus, but it is booting and responding to SPI commands.
(I'm using an ESP32 for control. And the FPGA is generating some random square wave I2S to feed into the Cirrus, but I'm not getting any sound output yet.)
If I can just get Stereo working, then I can try decoding Atmos or DTS-X, then I'll be able to have more boards made for a proper hardware decoder.
(and also finish building my own 12-channel amp, which is the main goal atm.)
The board has an ADAU1466 DSP as well, which is meant for room correction / EQ / delays. Basically the same chip in the smaller MiniDSP.
(the FPGA can do some delays and DSP stuff, but it's a bit limited.)

I love these! Huge Huge crown fan. Once you start driving all this, a commercial amp like crown makes so much sense. 8 2 channel crowns giving you 250W RMS at 8 ohms would run a theater beautifully before you get into the actual commercial JBL theater systems. I'd love to see you try PA speakers for theater too. Behringer powered 10s or 12s can be had cheap compared to anything SVS makes.

Epic journey Zeos, welcome to Atmos! Glad you enjoyed it. I'll be grabbing an HTP-1 soon for my 7.2.4 build. Regarding the complaint about the top middles, I think in your setup with 4 speakers on top they would just be top front and rear. Atmos has no concept of front heights like you had with the third pair up front, that's an Auro thing. But if you want the full customization like you mentioned towards the end, you might need to go full Trinnov and sell your car, haha.

Ehh it depends. Balanced circuitry is good for eliminating noise, but usually that is very minimal anyways with modern electronics and cables so it's not an enormous difference. The only time it makes a large difference is if your amplifier is designed to have balanced outputs into headphones specifically, since you can get a lot more power with balanced outputs into headphones.

Actually, a lot of receivers and processors starting in the midrange prices start having multiple dac chips. Different mfg's set them up differently. As an example my Denon 3700H has 2 AK4458's while the 4700H has 7 PCM5102A's. A lot of the high end 3k dollar plus receivers and processors have 8 or more ESS Sabre DACs which is likely what that Monoprice unit has.

    • @Dougie085
      @Dougie085 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

When I say 8 DACs many times that's 8 DACs that have 8 channels, more than likely 2 whole chips for the front 2 channels alone or 16 outputs. That's how the Sabre DACs get their insane performance though.

On the "spend a hundred dollars and you'll be fine" part, I notice that ifi have just announced budget versions of their entire lower end desktop range, the Zen dac v2 (I have one, it's great) included.
"More or less" the same electronics inside, I think, but with plastic cases and other tweaks to take the price down to £99 per item, with the standard Zen dac v2 currently £164 on Amazon UK. Interesting move.

I would love to see a nerfed version of the Ifi Go blue. Maybe get it closer to the price of the qudelix 5k, BTR5. I think it looks really cool but it would be really hard to justify paying nearly twice as much for that over the Q5K in my opinion. Although if I'm being honest even if they got the price point down, I'll probably take the parametric equalizer on that over the ifi model. But it would be a tougher decision.

MR. Z, I'm using my HTP-1 with my Emotiva A7 by using XLR to RCA cables by Worlds Best Cables. Although I really like Auro 3D, (actually Auro 2D because of lack of source material), I really miss Neo 6. The beauty of the HTP-1 is the massive adjustability of the unit. Waiting for the rumored Onkyo TX-RZ70 that is supposed to have Auro 3D its also my #1 pick, and I designed my speaker setup to work with it, because a proper Auro 3D setup will also work with Atmos and DTS:X but not the other way around. Not sure I am willing to buy into the HTP-1 for that feature (the processor and the amps) especially not until it comes with HDMI 2.1
The BAD thing about Auro 3D is the lack of native content, so good luck finding movies using it, the good thing is its upmixer is supposed to be pretty awesome, often preferred to use the Auromatic upmixer to watch an Atmos movie rather than even the Native Atmos playback due to how bad some Atmos mixes are.
Also I am so jealous of your space? I love how open it is, as a follow youtuber I would die to have that space to work with.

Only just got around to watching this many months later! It would be really cool if you could create a permanent matched speaker setup that would work with atmos, DTS-X or auro 3D amps for reviews, I know
It would mean a lot of speakers as the auros would make it more annoying not using the same overhead configs, so it might be over 20 speakers that are needed lol. Probably save you time in the long run though for all the a.v amp and processor stuff, then when a new amp/dsp comes out you just connect speaker cables and bang! all done.

Yes, with my 10+ years old Porta Pro running off my laptop's on-board DAC, I can confirm, that this setup is indeed very poggers.
The reason why practically nobody supports surround is very simple: virtually no one has the space or money for this, or even cares about it, because it makes very little difference with most movies for most people. If you're watching random shit on the TV, no way that's gonna be recorded in surround, and you'd just be wasting your money to trip over audio cables. The best chance would be making Blu-ray producers release proper surround audio tracks for the 10 people that care, but there's very little motivation for that.
Even if my entire apartment wasn't half of the size of this setup, I still couldn't justify the ridiculous expense to gain nothing from Netflix movies and seasonal anime ripped off a random Japanese TV channel, so that's why no one has surround, and why everything is mixed for stereo.

I think the Atmos diagram for the selection between 2 and 4 and 6 speakers is misleading. Every diagram I saw when I set up my four speaker system shows a pair in front of you and a pair behind you. The pair in front of you and behind you were set at a certain angle off your seating position. The parent front was not pushed all the way up against the front wall on top of the TV. That was only if you had six six speakers or three pairs. Your setup basically looks like that already. I'm guessing it would be fine if you just turned on. The four speakers ended the calibration.
