    People compare it to 3D printing but it's actually the other way round : you work in the physical world, and then digitize it.
    Clay enables several people to stand around a model and see requested changes being made.

    I am sure Ford's Clay milling department is over the moon with this video.
    As a 5-axis Machine operator who specializes in clay milling at JLR, i would be pretty damn pissed if we made a video like this - completely forgetting about a skilled man's department to big up another

    What tricks do these guys use to have the clay model perfectly symmetrical? I always assumed they only do one half of the car.

      +Emanuel D is it polymer clay ??
      because I have the polymer clay and it shows different reflection at different smoothing ??

      They use an industrial type of clay that doesn't need water.

    This seems a bit dated to me. I like it, but surely this could all be done far more efficiently by going straight to CAD?

      A computer actually limits me and it is very tricky when it comes to complex shapes I want to achieve

    • @AnthonyClauser
      @AnthonyClauser 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      samfisher01 - I believe this is actually much more effective and actually cheaper. As the video said, they do eventually scan it into a computer program (for the second time). Shortly after this I imagine they are nearly at making actual cars.
      I know all the US car companies still do this, and probably all the non US too that are large volume companies.

    • @NuclearRoll
      @NuclearRoll 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      samfisher01 eh, designing a new car is a process that you want to be absolutely sure of before production. Being able to actually see the final product as a designer is extremely important, especially on a car. There's no way to know that the cool curve on the front looks horrible if your standing behind the car etc. Maybe vr could be a solution but for now this is perfectly practical.

    Why can't they just get a big 3d printer??

    • @melzariodesign
      @melzariodesign 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very inefficient especially from a financial sense. 3d printing doesn't allow changes to be made at will like clay does

    Give me a break. All the cars today look the same. Why you need all this trouble with the clay? Just take the cars of three competitors, do an average and then introduce a few very slight variations done digitally by a computer. The remaining clay donate it to nurseries or kindergartens in the area. The kids will be happy. Call the near Starbucks persuade them to hire these artists as baristas.

    хрень это всё полная! Сегодня прототипы авто делаются исключительно в цифррвом виде без всякой глины и не в тех программах которые валяются во всемирной помойке и не на тех компах, которые в магазинах стоят.
