Meet Ford Supervan’s Super Fan

- From the first time that crowds felt the rumble of its Le Mans-winning V8 and watched it attack corners on three wheels, the Ford Supervan wowed and entertained with a unique mix of racing performance and classic Transit looks.
But the Ford Transit evolved and so did Supervan - far from a quiet retirement in Ford’s Heritage Collection or rusting in an oily garage corner, Supervan went on to live a remarkable life even out of the spotlight…

Growing up dad was a builder he needed a van for work one day he decided to retire the old commer van and came home with a transit repowered with a 308v8 9" Salisbury diff lake pipes jolly wide rims on the back no side windows man it was cool AZ it served the family well went all over NZ on holidays. Seeing this brings back memories I miss my family. Thanks go SUPERVAN!!
Nice!!!!
Don’t buy the new ones me mate’s one cost thousands to fix one axle had to come from Russia the only good thing about it was it was while it was going he sold it
Ya got that right! 😂
Keeping all the 'family' in the loop. Old Fords Never Die - They Just Go Faster .
ABSOLUTELY 😊
Being an ex Ford apprentice in the early 70's, I remember this parked up in the training school. Wonderful to see it again.
This van is just so legendary 😊
From a Vauxhall man, Great Respect 🫡
Some fantastic engineering in that and what a tool it must be 👌👏👏👏
If only modern fords were as good
I remember Supervan - great to see it’s still with us - thank you and what an amazing story ✌️
The mk1 transit was the best looking van . Vastly better than the jelly mould blobs that followed.
The Mk2 was a nice one too.
I had a 1980 pickup in the late 80s.
After that I had a 1983 van. I drove from Denmark to Spain and back at top speed(112km/h), it used less than ½ liter of motor oil on that trip. 👌
And then came the mk3, it was uninteresting, boring and ugly.
I'm 50 years young and this is the first time of me learning of the Supervan. That may just be one of the coolest vehicles I have seen in a long, long time. I would love to have a similar built van like this.
Saw this at Brands Hatch in the early 70s racing a full on Escort saloon racer. The car was given a 30 second advantage and after 5 laps, the Supervan had blown it away!
I remember seeing it run at Snetterton and S/Stone back in the day. Always liked it, also being a lifelong Ford fan. So pleased to see it's still around and looking like new. Hope to see it for real again at a show somewhere.
Very cool !!
Got to say the first Supervan looks the absolute best. The new one looks like an rolling iron mixed with a hoover.
I adore supervan 1, it’s not as fast as the following models but it’s brilliant, that promotional advert for it is legendary in my mind, it’s a vehicle that nobody would think to build, but someone did, I absolutely love it.
As a van owner/driver/fan, this is No.1.
Ive always been so fascinated by this van it’s so unique and amazing
Mine would go round corners exactly the same way, lifting the front wheel.
The wide footprint was fantastic.
I ran a front mounted alloy V8 plus auto transmission and rear end
out of a Leyland P76 here in Australia.
Nice. The old p76 conversion. Over here in nz, back in the day quite a few had 202 holden repowers, mostly bedfords tho. My dad had a van when i was a kid with a 289 in it, had a xb falcon grille, hq ute tail lights and was painted in primer with a purple guide coat. Good times. Also had roof lights, a roof console with a tape deck and graphic equaliser and cb radio. a bed in the back and 2 side ways couch’s in the back. As a 8 year old kid i had alot of memorys rollin in that. Bring back the van days i say.
British legend. I had no idea the original one was saved and then lost to time again. Third time lucky.....
A thing of beauty, in a timeless era. Don't mention the new Capri in the same breath though.
Now, why did you mention that abomination ? . A nice chat about transits, and you mentioned that .
What a legend this guy is letting others see it and enjoy it, massive respect. 👍
Loved Ford and the Supervan series, Some mental Vans.
Ooooooooh yeeeeeeeah ! remember it well . did many happy delivery miles in a Mk 1 , fast and reliable , never let me down , always wanted a V8 though .
This type of van used to be my school bus in the 80’s
Nice 😊 Mad that the original probably got scrapped years ago
Watching the vintage films on this van running at speed...man what a rush. Also looked like quite a fun handful LOL
It was in the car park at the Apprentice Centre in Harold Hill along with the GT40 - i know I was there from 1973-75
Absolutely gorgeous I absolutely love the mk1 transits they’ve always been one of my favourites a credit to you sir 👍
Wouldn't it be great to have ford engineers building vehicles like this legendary van today. Avo factory builds. That's what ford people would buy today. Not 3 pot fiesta St ,s like mine. Great video .
That Fiesta ST is a great car though... best I've driven.
What a wonderful thing to have achieved, something nice to report amongst the horrible things we see daily..thanks for rebuilding and sharing with us fans from back in the day😊❤
Its still around and looking great! I was a big fan of custom vans back in the day. Great to see this, thanks.
Compared to the new Transhite ... It would still be a supervan with a 1.6 ohc fitted .
Legend Super Van fantastic to see it's still going strong. Legend true Legend from my youth 🙌
Coolest van on the planet...
What a masterpiece 😊
I remember the real super van and I'd seen it on the track several times back in the day. It was fantastic. I also remember racing against Chris Craft in his orange Ford Anglia. Happy days now long gone unfortunately.
The Ford Transit were better than most cars of the day in Europe - it could out -run, brake and steer any police cars. It were the go to getaway car. The most amazing part of it - the Transits were stock... I remember the Mark 1's being almost everywhere. It's as if the Transit is reborn. Modern Transits are a pleasure to drive - once more better than many contemporary cars. It's like this one of a kind Transit were reborn to celebrate Ford going back to the roots... Getting everything correct. I've recently had a special variant with 2 sliding doors and a system for your tools easy to reach from the drivers side. Loved that thing... All the creature comforts and never missing a beat - even not with a trailer behind in the worst of conditions...
Iconic!
I have an RC replica that I built, ridiculous fun even at 1/10 scale
I had a 1967 12 seater minibus in the 70s v4 engine best looking van ever new ones today have no charm
It looks amazing
Is it a new build the same as the original Van
I'm guessing it's not the original Van
But a like for Like copy
I drove the Transit van with the V4 engine, when I much younger, around Warwick Farm Racetrack here in Australia, Both my Father & I worked for the Catering Business distributing food all around racecourse Food outlets, so Before Races & After, I got to tell pie's in back I was a racing driver for a bit, but V8 Transit would have fitted my dreams better ...
Ahh, but could it carry UNLIMITED RICE PUDDING!?
@@simeonyves5940 Well it would carry Pies, Sandwiches, Fish & Chips, Drinks, Milk, Tea Coffee, Paper Cups even some puddings, but nothing unlimited, there wasn't room .. 😉
@@James_T_Quirk Daaa.Lek. Food. Is. Sup.E.Rior! 🤪
Yeah, got a kick out of the "Remembrance" Davros Profile pic, as "Remembrance" is my Second Favorite Doctor Who Story of all time! only "Genesis" beats it for me :)
Sounds like it was quite a nice little Business keeping the Rev Heads well fed though! :)
@@simeonyves5940 I was buried in my Part, I missed that McCoy Quote, now days I am Disabled, so the Davros photo is closer to reality every day ...
@@James_T_Quirk I am sorry you missed Remembrance first time out due to being buried with work, as its a Classic! Right up there with Genesis as Peak Who and that is very high regard indeed!
I am very sorry to hear you are in a wheelchair nowadays however, you are in my Prayers.
Take Care man!
That is F sick is the biggest and thickest beast in the track 👍👍👍👍
Love it, I bet that van is an absolute pleasure to drive. Like button energized. 😊
What a gorgeous thing 🤍🖤
Good on you mate for building this up I thought it was great when Ford built it and if my memory serves me well it was on a Ford stand at the motor show.
Stunning 👍🏻
I own one as well here in the U.S. It's 1/64th scale and made by Hot Wheels. 😆 Cool as hell, no matter what scale. What a beast!!!!
When white van man had some REAL power......
Been looking for this van for years
The original and best. ❤
That van is as cool as f*** and its owner is even cooler. 😎😎😎😎
My favourite Old Ford in existence, still faster than 2 and3❤👌
What a fanatic story !!!
Look it’s super cool. I always. Liked these. Ford vans.
Very cool!!!! 🤜🤛
Always thought this was the best van ever built
Williams also did one, i dont remember much about it but was on the car program with some bird driving it. In '66 l bought a brand new LWB, in wet weather it just danced all over the street.
Remarkable old van
Superb well done andy, its been a journey i know but well worth it ,looks fantastic take a bow sir .. :) regards Marc
Look at that steering angle!
What a beast, it’s beautiful 👍💪
Well done looks amazing
You need the XJ220 powered one to make the set.was involved with building that car in the day awesome, was on top gear when it was watchable.
Just WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like a van with the front end from a 1955 Thunderbird.
Whatever your view : Essex Boy = Essex Ford(Van, 3.0S/2.8i, RS1600/XR3i, Cosy Escort/Sierra.....).
BTW my BiL has always been a mad Ford Cosy Boy (he did have a turbo GSi for a while, when he went rogue...). - LOL!
Keep safe and well folks. ❤
I have photos of supervan going around Silverstone at the first UK truck race meeting along with projet the ford Cargo
I'm sure there used to be one in a transport museum in Leyland with an F1 engine in the back
Looks great. Thank you.
I loved my transit.
As a teenager living in Denmark every time I saw a ford van like this a Bedford I got very excited lol love them I don’t know why
Seriously cool. Same shell as our old school mini bus but doubt it struggles up hill.
I remember seeing Supervan during the half-way interval at the stock car track at Harringay, would have been about 1971. Love the crackle of a V8!
It would be great if Ford could build a replica Supervan 2 to complete the set.
IIRC, SV2 was modified to make SV3, and made to look like the then new mk3 Transit. The rear half of the SV3 is clearly still based on mk2 Transit body styling.
Hi this is an amazing story about this vehicle ,just a question is this the original vehicle ? And did all the parts come with it ? If not how hard was it to re source the parts ?
As it half transit and half ford gt 40 ?
Love the awsome van 😎🤙💪
Stunning van looks great with those fat wheels 👌😎🇬🇧
Need to clone Supervan 3 so Supervan 2 can join the crew.
When I were very young I remember Ford building a Transit van with an F1 DFV engine. Is that the same van you now installed an American V8 in? Or is that another one?
John at Detroit motors says well done and you look well
Old Ford never die they just get lowered.
Awesome
That has a Rover V8 Badge.
Beast
Awesome!!!
Beautiful van an amazing wonderful journey for all involved well done to everyone involved in whole story spanning over longtime 👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Ford you should fire your naming division the capri was a disaster 💀
I hope this van doesn’t have all the problems my brand new transit custom has where things just stop working. Ford seems to th8nk it’s okay to sell vans with known design faults and can’t take responsibility for them.
Fork is a cooking utensil
That is a nice looking car. WOW its sexy
No mention of what engine is in it ? What did the cop visit have to do with anything ?
Its a pity they changed the body of supervan 2 to a mk3 liked the 2nd one .
Where is the car, would love to do a video for my automotive TH-cam channel
No one would have ever paid for fanciful effects like ornamental fenders, swollen sound deadening "chair rail" effects, or aerodynamic sound tunneling. It's nice when you stuff fat tires in stuff though :D Leave it to the movies ... aha, please. ( ( ( · )) )
Im confused the story is very broken. So is this the original van or a replica??
Historic van, but remove those hideous Rover V8 badges. If you really want V8 Badges on it, then use something more in keeping like the 289 V8 badges to match the engine.
Aren't they what the original had? Also, if I'm not mistaken, the same as the SA Fords like the Capri Perana.
A lot of body roll.
Yes there is .
I presume a lot of that body roll could be reduced ?
Lower the van ?
Fit strut top strengtheners ?
Etc etc
but why it look like a fat Trabant tho
It's a Ford. Oh well 🙄
That looks tit!
Im happy hewas reunited with Supavan. But if i was faced with the ultimatum or dilemma of selling my car because of marriage , i would just let the old lady go and keep the car🤣🤣
Absolutely the coolest fkn thing I’ve ever seen. 🇺🇸🥲
