Submitted for Season 82 of the Ukulele "Heartbreak and Disappointment week. The version I covered was originally recorded on guitar in the key of B so I am tuned down 1/2 step on the ukulele if you want to play along the chords are just C / F / G
I really love this song and would love to learn how to play it. I’m very green with a ukulele but enjoy it very much. Would you share the picking pattern by any chance? Sounds like you nailed it
Thanks so much FiL. I love it when I can find songs in my somewhat limited range. I think I'm a baritone who would like to be a tenor! I'm not above transposing a song it I really want to sing it.
I've listened to three or four of your covers, and, to say the least - they're all really excellent. I (try to) play the guitar, and have recently been contemplating a ukelele. Your arrangements are all spot on, and that you not only chose this song, but conquered it, is really special. I appreciate this immensely, and when I get a ukelele of my own, I''ll be sure to learn this song right off the bat, with the help of this video, of course.
Wow, thanks for the great comment. I would encourage you to give the uke a try. I was a guitar player like you prior to picking up the Ukulele about a year ago now. I was in a rut and the uke is great for breaking out of that but retaining the familiar string intervals. If you have played with a capo and know guitar chords, the ukulele is easy to get going with and can be inexpensive to boot.. If you do pick one up I encourage you to join us on the Ukulele Underground Seasons forum. There is a great bunch of regulars there that are very welcoming and encouraging to beginners of all skill levels. The format has really helped develop my playing by giving you that little nudge each week to try something new. I think I learned more in the last year than I have in a long time. If you get stuck, let me know. Hopefully I can help out.
Hey Mr. Morse. Mars Coban was my old account. Well, I did finally pick up a uke, and have written some songs on it, though I dont have any of those uploaded yet. However, I do have some guitar songs up, and would love if you'd check them out and tell me what you you think. If not, you're still one weirdly unassuming badass, and I'll continue to view your channel, as you seem to strike a homerun almost every friggin time.
Thank you for your very thoughtful comments. I do try to capture some kernel of the original when I tackle a song, within the limits of my own abilities of course! It is fun and challenging to do this. I do admire others who can bring something of the original feel yet still put their own style on it. When done right it's is magical and you can a song in a new way. Best wishes to you on your musical journey! If you do get a uke come join us on UU and the seasons and play us a tune. There is always room around our little virtual campfire for another song.
Nice picking! Can't remember if I mentioned this before, but I really love your singing. Like TCK, you always seem to pick songs that are perfect for your voice.
Hello Andrew, long time from hearing from me,hope your well,i just watched the Ethan Hawke Film Blaze, and ive fallen hook line &sinker for Blaze, this song is just so amazing goes straight to my heart, ive been studying your video for days tring to figure out the picking as i desperately want to learn this tune, and just strumming doesnt do it justice, any chance you could share your arrangenent with me,i would be enternally gratefull, also love your cover,it is awesome,i hope to get back to the seasons soon, ive just been in hospital for surgery had my lower wisdom teeth removed im ok,best wishes im off to learn more about Blaze.
Thanks for reminding me about the film. I'd forgotten this was coming out. Did you see it in a theater or streaming? I will take a look and see if I can figure out my own noodles. I definitely didn't "arrange" this one on paper, but I must have worked out a picking pattern.
@@AndrewMorsePDX many thanks Andrew,i streamed the film its amazing,i want to see the documentary duct tape messiah, think im going to have to buy that, also want to read his wifes book, this song is one of my all time faves now,i have to have a regular fix of blaze,i was contenplating trying to learn guitar but want to persist with ukulele, hopefully get half as good as you one day, many thanks for the reply best wishes from me 👍🏻
Great video! Did you rework it for ukulele yourself? I'm more of a beginner but with some musical background, gonna try to figure out your transitions through reviewing this video. Thanks for putting it out there!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes I had recently discovered Blaze Foley and I wanted to work out a simple fingerstyle tune. Most of his are simple 1 4 5 chords with the relative minors thrown in often as well, but the picking is a little hard to figure out. I was not entirely happy with the arrangement and would like to re-visit it with a Baritone size ukulele or at least a Low G. It doesn't sound right with reentrant tuning in my opinion.
I should add that working out a song like this composed for guitar with the walking bass on the lower two strings of the guitar is always going to be a compromise because you only have 4 strings so the picking is going to be different. I usually try to go for the melody line on the higher E and A strings and approximate the bass with lower G and C strings. I usually have to throw a quick strum in there somewhere to keep the timing right. I tried another Foley tune on Baritone with a more syncopated style which turned out pretty well, it's here on my channel somewhere. Best of luck with your uke'n!
Andrew Morse Thanks for this! I am thinking of getting a tenor uke and tuning it with the low g string. I am hoping maybe that will make the walking bass a little easier and clearer. What do you think?
Andrew Morse By the way, if you haven't seen this hour long documentary about Blaze Foley, do yourself a favor! It is one of the best music documentaries I have seen, and has resulted in a slight obsession with the man's music and his story. It is available on Vimeo -- vimeo.com/103775158
dantlewis Great link thanks! I've heard about the documentary when it was still in development but have not seen it. I think the low G linear tuning does help with this picking style. I tend to use that tuning for songs of that type.
That was GREAT Silvio! Thanks for sharing 👌✌️

Nice work and beautiful sound! Can you share the picking/strumming pattern?
Nice John Prine vibe here and some nice fingerpicking
What's the picking/strumming pattern please? Sounds wonderful
I absolutely love this song, and kudos to you for learning it on the uke. Very beautifully done.
Rad!
Thank Pa, Kinda proud I figured out this arrangement so fast.
Amazing ❤
