Handcuffs lock so that they cannot be opened, but another feature that all real handcuffs have is the double lock. Its a locking mechanism that keeps the handcuff from closing any further. Normal handcuffs can close easily and cut off circulation. Trick handcuffs like theirs close even easy because the lower quality. So, when they slept, bumped against something, or put any pressure on the arm of the cuff, it would have closed tightly. When you watch the end video you can see where the arm of the cuff is not even tightened that far, making the back of the arm stick out quite a bit. They obviously would have had to remove the cuffs at least once in order to adjust them when they accidentally tightened, yet they act like the key was the only way.
