I'm here to check this out cause I saw Butch Vig saying Billy Corgan did that same thing you described - the ADA in front of a Marshall on the album Gish. That album has superb guitar tones!
Euge, I've owned my ADA MP-1 since 1989 and now it's 2024 and I still learned something new about programming it from your great video..thank you for this.
Producer Michael Wagener (who was for a time the guitarist in Accept, before they became huge) used this to great effect with many bands. I remember hearing White Lion's 'Big Game' album and being astonished at how good it sounded. And then Extreme's 'Pornografitti' sounded even better. It was all over lots of late 80's and early 90's albums, it always sounded very natural and organic to my ears. Probably helped that it was being played through by some of the best gunslingers ever! Great demo.
@@0megalul309Nope, McIntosh 2100 solid state power amp. The MP1 was designed to have both a preamp and power amp style of saturation specifically so it would sound better with solid state power amps. Sounds great with tube power also but the Wagner albums were the McIntosh

I finally found a really clean ADA MP-1 for a great price, ive wanted one since 89 when one of my friends got one. but watching you vid finally made me pull the trigger.
I bought an ADA mp1 (original first version) in 1989. As a final amplifier I used a Marshall jcm 800, 2210 (connected to the send-return) I used this combination until three years ago when I bought the Evh 5150 III 50 W El34.
@@Dennisbluschke Yes. This evh amp is absolutely superior in every way. Maybe I'm only missing this "famous" chorus in ADA. But with the help of line 6 hx effects I can achieve a similar sound.
Had one of these waaay back, then foolishly sold it when I dumped the rack system. For years you could buy these on craigslist for $100-150 all day everyday. Then the pricing went bezzerker with the gear craze of the pandemic. Tooled around with the idea of getting another but remembered the PITA to dial in the tones with the push buttons up/down/enter - just dont have time for that at my age. Nonetheless it's a rock n roll machine!
Nice! A blast from my past! My main rig back in the day was a full ADA rig: MP-1, MQ-1, B200S and four 2x12 vertical splitstacks; and an Alesis QuadraVerb and Furman power conditioner. Eventually, I replaced the MP-1 and MQ-1 with an MP-2. The MP-2 has a secondary EQ so I no longer needed the MQ-1...turns out it was much easier to program the MP-1 and MQ-1; I could reuse different MQ-1 eq curves with different MP-1 patches. In the MP-2, all that EQ had to be programmed into the patch. I still have my main MQ-2, the only challenge is if the screen goes, difficult to source a replacement. Last I checked, a few years ago, it was still working. Cheers!
Ahhhhh!! Wish I still had mine. Classic case of where the heck did that go. Funny thing. Just yesterday an old girlfriend from thirty years ago found a live tape of my old band. I was using the mp1. Sounded pretty awesome! 😄
I had a ADA MP-1 back in the day. Boogie rackmount head and an Alesis Quadraverb. Needed $$$ to go to University and sold all my gear along with my muscle car. Never crossed my mind to even ask my parents for help. Oh how times have changed lol.
I have a complete ADA MP1 rig I built and bought back in the day. To answer your question, I'd recommend taking a serious look at the new ENGL 20W Steve Morse amp. I believe it also comes in a 100W version, but the big brother is older, and I haven't looked closely at its specs.

Hmm, I should be commenting on the main subject, however, noticed your use of mic pre. I have a neve style WA73-EQ and yours was WA-412. It would be interesting subject for a video to compare different mic pres for guitar use (cabinet, mic, mic-pre and into i/o). I like the neve style or "sound", which has been found on many blogger racks that have been doing professional work for ages. I put the sound on quotes, because that would be the topic of a video whether a pre makes difference and if yes, how much and maby in what kind of applications different pres might be more suitable. I'm in an impression that also WA-412 is not that transparent, which can be a deciding factor for gtr and for example high gain use, hence, interesting topic.
Thanks for the suggestion! It can be transparent or coloured depending how hard you push it. I’d say I push it just to get a bit of that classic API (it’s basically a clone of an API) style punch.
Ive got one from 88' and ive modded it to the tits. I can tell u a few objectively legit mods. The ceramic input resistor sounds inferior to an orange drop of the same value. Less dull mud. The pcb input (inverting op amp) 25k mini pot isnt enough, a 100k wired to the rear input jack hole is very helpful. Installing 2k and 10k mini pots where the mid and bass resistors are really helps the EQ flexibility. The tube board 6.8uf filters benefit from becoming 22uf. Youll never hear this thing withought both outputs feeding an amp and after using a 2:90, recto, and probably a dozen others nothing sounded near as good as 2 Krankensteins fx loop returns 🤘
