RC Quick Tips - Considerations when buying a radio/transmitter

  • In this video I share my thoughts on buying a radio and what you should consider when you start out. Usually the first radio is a simple, low cost modal that comes with a plane, quad or helicopter.
    The next radio you buy can be expensive and is an investment in the hobby. I've finally bought my next radio after 7 years with the DX7 and wanted to share my experiences.
    I am sure that there will be lots of 'this radio is better because' and 'that radio is rubbish because' comments but this just proves my point perfectly. Everyone's experiences are different so do your own research and explore the options with people you can trust before making your choice.
    For information my Dx9 was purchased form Steve Webb hobbies - www.stevewebb.c...

    I got a DX8 for my first radio yesterday, currently gathering the bits for the quad than my next model will probably be an AXN. Being able to play with it in my local shop and compare it with cheaper systems allowed me to see how good a high end radio felt in the hands. Plus the DX8 is an old model so I got a good deal on it, still it was expensive, but I would rather get a radio that is decent and will last me than a radio I would out grow within a year.

    Can you make a video with a list of available transmitters in the same style as you did the flight controllers in 2016. Im looking to buy a good transmitter but I don't even know my options and could you also maybe create one to explain the taranis 9xd about what the programming and all the feauturws are in simple.
    Thank you and love your channel!

      +Mystical Daptfyie depends on your budget. I'd recommend a FS-i6s or Turnigy Evolution if you want cheap and basic, a Frsky QX7 for new pilots and the excellent Frsky Taranis X9D+ if you want a radio that'll last for years. Happy flying

      IRFZ44 i had a FrSky modue on my DSX9 JR and it was PERFECT. never lost signal. i hate DSM2-DSMX but now that jr have destroyed, the devo10 can keep me into the hobby untill i find money for a new Futaba to fly the expensive big gas engine models with the best system there is... FrSky protocol is very good but it is the overal quality of the electronics inside FRSKY taranis that makes me wanna buy a futaba.

    • @renzevenir4853
      @renzevenir4853 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Futaba is something you can trust, especially for something expensive like big gas engine planes but not everybody can afford Futaba so Taranis is a great alternative.

    Please o please do not recommend Spektrum radios without reservations or warnings, they are really quite unreliable in the big scheme of things (ie. underpowered compared to more or less all other brands really making for a weak signal reliance). Spektrum might look 'cheap' or even a good value to beginners, but there are countless amounts of people who ran into brown-out / interference issues where mostly the radio system was to blame (and then I'm not talking about beginners who won't admit pilot-error crashes, I'm talking models dropping from the sky for no apparent reason which later turned out to have the brown-out light burning). The signal's strength with Spektrum radios really is just very weak. Interference in DSM, DSM2 and even the newer DSMX can knock your expensive planes, helicopters or quads out of the sky. I would honestly recommend saving up more money and buy an Hitec Aurora 9, extremely easy to program and excellent value in terms of channels, model memory, features and so on or when on a budget go with the Taranis or Turnigy 9X (yes, it has incomplete software and has a cheap build quality, but at the very least the signal sending / receiving will always be flawless because of frequency hopping). Other radios will last for ages as well, assuming you don't literally throw it around.
    Don't take this personal, I'm sure you've had good experience with Spektrum over 7 years, or at least I'd hope so. But I've seen Spektrum planes go down way too often. At some point it's not a matter of bad luck or chance anymore if all the planes were flown with Spektrum radio gear. In all cases the problems disappeared with buying new radio gear as well and most crashes did not have broken electronics apart from impact damage, battery still with enough juice to fly. I respect your opinion and people should make up their own minds, but my faith in Spektrum is exactly zero. :)

      @PHeMoX 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Painless360 Yeah, except it goes a bit further than 'best radio' arguments. I don't really have an opinion on the 'best radio' at all. It's more about the 'least reliable brand' of radios. I'd say that's different. Then again I respect your view that's obviously different from mine, so let's simply agree to disagree.

      I fly not cheap Align Helis (450L DFC & 700E DFC) with Spectrum DX8 for about 2 years and never had a brown-out!! Also I see the local club fliers with expensive war birds using DX8 and DX9, most of them. Where do you get your bad info from??

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      F GO From years of experience of seeing people crash whenever a couple of Spektrum users fly together or alone in a more noisy environment. The only ones failing where the Spektrum radio systems and this includes large 1/10 scale planes. Those people had just as much faith in Spektrum as you do, until it went haywire. Some of them were very experienced builders. The transmitted signal coming from a Spektrum radio system is incredibly weak and it's hopping system is archaic and has a tendency to choose two channels that overlap, enabling a single interference to knock the entire signal out. So yeah, it's fairly easy to knock them out of the sky through interference / noise. Sometimes brown-outs are related to a lacking power setup (beginner mistakes in building), but more often than not it's related to the weak signals itself.
      Also keep in mind how you would stay fairly close with helicopters, so you probably are less likely to run into brown-out problems. (And no, it's not a problem of flying 'out of range', it's a problem of losing signal whilst being well in viewing range). Any electrical failure of other components in a plane also tends to mess the receiver up, confuse it if you will and then lock itself out. Other radio systems do not fail at that point. I've landed plenty of planes and even helicopters with messed up servos.
      Having said all that, yes, you might not have run into problems yet, but with Spektrum most people eventually do.

    Hi All.
    Like your vidoes thats why I subcribed, My 2 pence, I used to live in Hyde so not so far from you. Now I live in Thailand (9years +) hear the locals all buy cheap copy wifi sytems, baby alarms and cloned phone to name a few items, so DSM2 is useless here without a satalite receiver, this as well adding to the cost. I started with a DX7 had 2 9330 as well, now I must admit I use a Futaba 14SG Fasstest system, receivers are expensive but I found the FRSky clones work well and relieablely, here.
    I would recommend bying the best radio you can afford, with the most channels, and they usually have sd card slots now to enable programming software updates, language and extra model profile saving and backup features.
    Please remember like you flight controllers, Esc's and other FPV gear, update to radios are important.
    Acro, Glider, Heli and now added Drone profile, to name but one usefull update.
    So to conclude, as your videos are wathched all over the world, As Stated in the video local knowledge is very important.
    The DSMX system from Spectrum has no problems here.
    Sorry could go on all day about radios, But it is called RC hobbie so make sure you have Radio controll.
    P.S.
    On a side note I followed all your Multiwii videos from start to finish adding little bits my self, and they ALL worked bluetooth, Gps etc. Then when I finished I saw the one where you explain about interferance from a quad 450 with onboard power distibution, Yes you quessed it thats what I had built, so a thought know all the vidoes are done, make a foot note telling people to watch the final video before starting as it will save having to do it all over again, especially as in my case I cut all the leads to minimul lenth, now need to extend them again, my bad. This is not a complant just a thought I would have not got it going with out you videos, as I had done the Naza then the Naze boards first which are much simpler.
    Have a great new year
    Paul
    Happy in sunny Thailand.
    Did not use spell check as on a linux machine keeping it simple, enjoying the hobby, thanks again for you great work.

    Good topic, good video. In my case, I resisted the advice of some to “start simple and work your way up”. Instead I just spent my first month or two in front of the computer learning as much as I could (and spent a lot of time on your channel, thanks). That education gave me a much better grasp of what would be required to satisfy my interests going forward, particularly with regards to number of channels (14 minimum) and programability. And so I jumped strait into a Taranis and have been happy ever since.;)

    I got my FrSky Taranis+ two days ago after following most of your steps without you even having told them ;) (after you've been "on the internet" for some time they should be common sense). Ordering from China was tempting, customer service was often better there than local shops. But having to package something up to China in the case something is broken and wait maybe a few month for replacement just wasn't worth it. And customs can be a bitch, too, at price levels like that. So I at least ordered from the same continent.
    Btw. the Taranis is top notch (yeah, I know, 6:50 ;) ). I doubted the hype all over a little, but it is justified. Everything feels very solid (no rattling anywhere or slop on any controls) and whoever wrote the menu and layed out the buttons, knew what he was doing. My last remote was over 20 years ago, 2 channels for a car. Still I got to set up the Taranis in less than an hour.
    So know I got to build my model! Scratch build quad, with parts from all over China and the local hardware store!

I would like to use it for fpv and bnf, is there better technology out there. I'm still using the early DX7 that was given to me by Paul Beard (Mr Spektrum) - a long story. I have also used Spektrum gear on a number of customer projects subsequently. I would be interested to know if Spektrum would still be your pick of currently available technology especially as regards reliability (I'm working on a 1/4 scale Blackburn Monoplane that will be about 2 years work by the time its finished so am in "belt & braces" mode as regards equipment for it). I just got myself a Taranis for xmas, what a radio this is! I was suspect about all the hype, but having used it for a week, it is justified! Voice, Telemetry, open source, 16 channels (if i'll ever use those) and custom imaginary switches for all kinds of stuff is great! It can even play music haha! I might buy an orange module since the stock one is inside the radio, 2 modules in one radio? Well, yeah! Just hope one antenna doesn't drown the other one lol.

    • @Painless360

      Yes it is indeed, you have the option to switch between internal and external modules. I am curious, have you ever tried another radio besides Spektrum? I had my hands on a dx6i before I moved to a 9x, which is also a fabulous radio but with flawed software. But if you flash it and ditch the Flysky module to put an FrSky in it, it becomes another monster. Not that the stock module is not good though, had about 1km range easily. Also, keep up the good work, me likey! ;)

  • @liambowers666

    Great video, you kind of brushed over receivers but a huge thing is receiver cost and availability! Also the benefits of the radio protocol you choose. IE for fpv spectrum is only reliable out to 100m-ish, FrSky can go a lot further. Those are huge things I wish I had thought about when buying my first radio

    Great Channel, had to re-subscribe for some reason. You didn't mention range. Which transmitter would you think has the best distance, ex. 2km?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      All of these have similar ranges as the power output has to be under the legal limit for the country you're in. Using receivers with more than one and longer antennas can help or using a radio that support a longer LRS module would be a consideration too. Best of luck!

    Sir i really enjoy and learnt a lot from your videos thank you! i have some questions if you can answer me please, i want to build a fixed wing plane with retractable landing gear, landing gear door and also i want this drone for piza delivery( i work for deliveroo and ohh the stip hill is killing me) as you can imagine i will have too many servos and need too many buttons to control the servos individually, my question is can one radio control and receiver does this all ?(if yes can you recommend one please) or do i need two? my second question is, while you were introducing about the pixhawk 2.1 you said it's possible to upload a map and the drone can follow the map to the destination and back to the home position, could you please make a video tutorial how to do that? thanks

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fixed wing landing gear has it's own servos as part of the mechanism so you connect them all to one putput - just make sure that you have enough power in the 5v lines for them to operate without affecting anything else. You'll need to pick a reciever that works with the radio you have. I use X8R in planes with lots of controls and a Pixhawk. I will make a video showing mission planning but in the meantime the documentation on the Arducopter wiki is excellent! Best of luck!

    Hi. I am a bit struggling to set up my Fly sky fs-t6 radio with my quad copter. Problem is that it doesn't wanna arm quad. But on Gui it shows that radio is connected and all controlls working. Have you had any experience like that? And what could be the fault?

      I have heard about getting high quality radio and i have chosen to do this, how ever i have interest towards cars and quads both and would like to use one radio, mainly not to spend too much and to get telemetry from battery, but there is next to no information what would be good choice for such "combi radio" if this thing even exists.
      I like feel and precision of car style radio (mainly going to do drifting, so precision throttle control is must), but that is no go for flying, but other hand stick control i feel is bit unaccurate for drifting, as i have habit of using linear motion as support like trigger in car controller (sorry if this is explained shitty, hope you get the idea what i mean).
      So any ideas towards this problem?

      get a friend to watch your quad (propless) and you set off by car , foot, cycle and find out when friend tells you its shut down via cell phone, or yelling if your close. then you will know exactly when the Rx fails and keep going till the VTx fails on the goggles. As you and your quad are on ground, this will be worst case distance. This Ball Park figure data is exclusively for your area as everyone is different. Safe would be 1/2 this distance, but your definition of "safe" will be up to you. You want really safe, don't put the battery in, now work from there. Happy flying.

    Ok First i just got back into the hobby this year and before that i was on 72 so 2.4 was new to me. I was considering a d6x but then happened on the Taranis and decided to go down that road. The decision was easier for me because it was like i was just starting out where you had to factor in all the spektrum gear you had on hand. Now i am sure the thought of a taranis came to your mind at some point just wondering what your thought process was and if you gave the taranis much thought? Thanks for all the videos they have been helpful

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome back to the hobby! Lots of cool technology now to make it even more fun!
      Thanks for the question. Interestingly a few people have seen this video as a promotion for Spektrum. I was very careful to not recommend any radio system as everyone has their own preferences and non are a perfect fit for everyone.
      I did think about other systems when. I got the new radio but I had reservations about the other choices and, as you rightly point out, an existing investment in the Spektrum gear.
      I may get a Taranis in the coming year but by then another radio might be the favourite platform.. All part of the fun of the hobby!
      Happy flying!

    • @pMustangw
      @pMustangw 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did understand you where not promoting Spektrum but that is where you ended up so because I and others probably value your opinion i was just wondering what points won you over. I fully appreciate your point we all have to do the research and decided what is best for us. Thanks
