  • In this Remote Control (R/C) quick tip I cover what Expo (or exponential) does on your radio.
    Often, then new to the hobby and reading the manual for a new transmitter a lot of things are taken for granted. This video is one in a small series that explains the basics.

    Expo has been one of those things that I've had trouble understanding just what it is . Thanks for explaining it in simple terms. I've been flying with SAFE for a long time now which I've been told in videos creates bad habits but now that you've explained it, I'm gonna put expo in my NX6 and hopefully it will help me fly better.

    Excellent presentation and my 2nd of the evening on expo.
    Made changes to my DX6 and am now flying my Nano QX 3D much more easily.
    New folks to RC need all the assistance possible. Quite a daunting amount of information to learn and I was getting very frustrated!
    It really underlines that RTF may not always be the best way to go with their limited transmitters.

    Expo is subjective in piloting a craft, but it is essential when considering gimbal control for cameras. For example- the TBS discovery offers the 2 axis gimbal and if you add some expo to the pitch control, then your video is superior since you can start the tilt slow, and increase the speed to smooth out the shot. I would never eliminate the expo from my variable switch that controls gimbal movement.
    I use expo in the FC for all flight control.
    Excellent video and explanation.

    Good explanation. Been fiddling around with this on my rc lawn mower. Bumped the motors to 24v and the rt lever was spastic just touching it at 12v now with 24v every time I tried to stear or go forward it would have sezers(sic) and rooster tail across my lawn. Now more manageable. I also set up flight mode so I have normal and sport(warp) drive for really big yards😃.

    Many of the people who criticize exponential are those who don't know How to set it up in the radios, that being said, Consider using the same exponential values For each Dual rate position of a control surface. In that way the control that surface will feel the same The only difference will be you will get more throw...

    It might have been better if the up/down stick movement in the graphics was shown on the Y axis of the graph instead of the X axis. It confused me at first.
    If you had used a servo with a long pointer attached to show the output when the stick was moved on a real transmitter it may have reinforced the message a little more, but on the whole a good explanation.
    One thing that the video did was to remind me to add expo to the new model that I set up on my transmitter at the weekend. Lack of expo, too much control surface movement and a tail heavy model made the test flight "interesting".
    As a side note, one of the original reasons for introducing expo to RC systems was to compensate for the non linear output of rotary servos, because without it movement of pushrods around the mid point is actually exaggerated.

    Great explanation ...as a beginner to RC helis, I find your videos very helpful..can you make a video about reading and understanding the parameter settings from a heli manual and then entering them into the Tx....I have a Blade 230 S heli and newer DX6 Tx....I can navigate the TX settings faily well, but the manual is written with a lot of short cut symbols...it may as well be a foreign language... ..thanks

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had a quick look at the manual and the setup page for the radios is designed so you can 'plug' those settings into the relevant part of the menu on your radio. It's setting up three flight modes, the first is normal and the other two are for 'idle up' with a panic button too. Not sure exactly what you're not sure about. If you need more let me know.

      Feel free to answer any or all of the below questions…as any help would be greatly appreciated.
      I set Throttle Cut to the 2 position switch "H"...
      I set Gear to the 3 position switch "B"
      I also set Flight mode to the 3 position switch "B"
      I set Aux 1 to switch "I" and reversed it.
      Question 1:
      I put flight mode on my 3 position switch "B"( per the book) ..I also put my D/R and Expos of aileron and elevator combined on 3 position switch "G " ( this is not in the book , but I can’t really understand where to put them.) I left rudder D/R and expo alone.
      I my 3 position set switch " G' to the following parameters:
      switch position 0 @ 70% -30 %, ( hoping this will make a very tame flight )
      switch position 1 @ 100% -30%, ( hoping this will make it a little more aggressive flight )
      switch position 2 @100% - 0 % ( hoping this will be used for a the most aggressive flight )
      Question 1a: Is there going to be a conflict between switches B and G, depending on their positions?
      Question 1b: Does beginner mode, on switch "B" , position 0....do basically the same thing as my programmed D/R and Expo rates on switch "G" in position 0 or are these two completely separate?....
      Question 1c: Should I be setting up the D/R and Expo’s differently?
      Question 1d: What happens if I remove all D/R and Expo’s completely?
      Question 2:
      I set Aux 1 to button "I"...my understanding is this is the SAFE mode....will SAFE mode work no matter what position the other switches " B" and "G" are in?
      Question 3:
      What exactly does GEAR mean for heli programming? The book states to program GEAR to switch "B".
      Question 4:
      What exactly does the word "Inhibit " mean for heli programming?

    How does cleanflight throttle default expo of 65 relate to the transmitter expo?
    I can see a difference in trans settings but CF doesn't seem to do anything at 65.

    Hi, im not sure if you can help me but im trying to get my head round something.
    Is there anyway to slow a servo down when used on a channel 3 button? So like when i click the ch3 button the servo moved at a certain speed, is there any way to slow that speed down that i can adjust on my transmitter?
    Many thanks
    Gaz

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gaz Man Depends on the radio. Cleaver ones like the Taranis let you move the channel value (and hence the servo) at any speed you want. You can also use a device that changes the value slowly that you install between the Rx and servo on the model..

    • @BoostedSnorlax
      @BoostedSnorlax 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Painless360 Ahh i see, thanks for your quick reply. Ill check out this device that slows it down. The reason why i need it is becuause ive made a rc car flamer device that makes exhaust pop flames. It uses a lighter and a servo to press the button but it presses the lighter too quickly and doesnt give it chance to fill the exhaust up with gas before igniting it....if this makes sence lol.
      Check my video out if you get chance.
      Thanks for the advice matey.

    Is it possible to control exponential or end points for surfaces on a non computer Transmitter at the transmitter rather than by moving the control horn linkage? Thanks

  • @donpillow7015
    @donpillow7015 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    How is exponential different than just setting up a curve. I assume that if you use a curve instead of expo you get the same thing but have more control over the curve?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Don Pillow The expo is a curve that flattens out around the middle of the control. If you have a radio that allows you to create custom curves that look the same then you could use those..

      @@Painless360 They were decent mid level transmitters though. I still have DX6i that i use for my sims because I can do the programming inside the radio like I would have to do it for my real models and it responds pretty much like it would in real life. The last version of Pheonix was excellent and I still like it better than realflight because I can get my heli's moving almost as fast as they would in realtime where Even Realflight Evolution just seems like the models are slow compared to what it is really like to fly them; namely my SAB Goblin 700 and Align T-Rex 800 just don't seem as 'twitchy' as they are in reality with RF whereas in Phoenix they respond every bit as fast. I really see very little difference in graphics between the two except in the models. Random blabbing concluded. . .
