This is exactly the type of information I and others need to start the design process and you have simplified it but made it easy to understand and not use jargon we might not be familiar with. I think the rig width calculation is a little off, looking at the Sim Lab wheel deck it is 600 wide, however this rig was 600 wide on the outside (52 on the inside), I guess you could however move the uprights to the side of the rig giving you 600 again. Really got a lot out of this video thanks! :)
Yeah - I put my uprights on top to limit width (since space is a premium for me). If I was using a third party wheel deck the uprights would go on the outside. Thanks for watching.
Great video and inspiring me to build rather than buy! Out of interest, what length were the 40/40 lengths you used for Rob's rig to mount the seat on to? Also what length is used for the vertical extrusions at the toe end of the pedal deck? Thanks!
I went over the app and downloaded it to my PC, after making measurements and building my sim rig the total was calculated at $323 with end caps included, no chair wheel mount, & monitor mount. At this price point I would just go ahead and order a TrackRacer sim rig and save me some time. It cost about the same. Materials are expensive unless I can source the 8020 aluminum cheaper... that's another headache... If this was possible 5 years ago it would be cheaper perhaps? F!@#$ inflation!!! LOL!
I mentioned in the guides themselves to ignore the prices it spits out and just to take those measurements to a local supplier. Those prices aren’t competitive.
Good video my friend! I appreciate it. I'm trying to "Lighten up" my DIY steel frame so that my 3DOF is more responsive. Have those V-3's hanging off the front and it really made the rig mushy. Adding the CSL made it even heavier. Been considering extrusions for a little while but most people are not running a motion rig like me. Question - would the frame flex under load? Take a look at my upper frame of the rig. That's all I want to build with this material. Also adding a Kirkey seat to save more weight. Thanks in advance anyone who reply's DMAX
I'm looking at this now, my issue is having the placement of mounting for chair and pedals... can I mount to the base, or do I need all the cross members...? Ie, the 40x40...?
I see it has the 20mm on top, its also easier to find in my area, would it be sturdy enough (will not have a dd wheel anytime soon) or do i need to go up or run 2 side by side

Great stuff. Part two of series is coming in the next couple of days. I use a universal plate like this one: iovaluetech.com/Compact-Cockpit-sff-wheel-Plate/ you can mount it either directly to 80/20 wheel deck or using a couple of short pieces of extra 80/20 running perpendicular to whee deck.

Definitely could do something better for cheaper, if you’re not afraid to put the work in. Profiles / connectors were around £250 and the seat and accessories came to another £250-ish. Good luck!

Looks like your cost will end up being similar to just buying a pre made sim cockpit kit. Unless I can save 30% or 40% over a premade kit I don't think I would bother DIY.
Hi. It’s 580mm (500mm innner width plus two 40mm frame sides). I’d recommend going for 600mm if you’re looking for DD wheels - the custom frames are usually that size.

Hi - Ive been researching this in depth and can advise that the 600mm is a guide based on some of the prefabricated, adjustable wheel plates that are available. These are typically 600mm wide. As such you need to have you uprights 600mm apart (not 520mm as in the example given by Finding Speed - his total width of 600mm Less 2 x 40mm). Good examples can be found at Trak Racer and Sim Labs. Note - 600mm is not a standard as such, different brands use different widths.

@@gorraksmashskull I agree. Unless you have one of the plates as your favourite it will be difficult to know how wide to make your rig. My thought in this is. 600mm seems to be the widest measure for any current plate. So, you either build to the widest fit ie 600mm inside width, to allow you the most choice (and incase you change your mind) or, you build to the specific width of the one plate you are going to definitely choose. Don't forget, some plate options don't fit all the way across between the uprights. These fix to a cross strut and as such give you even more options and make you less dependent on the rig width.
Sure - it’a the Bimarco Cobra 2. It’s an affordable ‘classic’ bucket seat available with lots of tweaks / customisations, but I will say that my butt gets numb during LONG sessions (eg. 3hour races). It’s probably best described as ‘firm’.

Yes. Using a Direct Drive wheel was the main factor for me when it came to building with 80/20. It’s rigid and very stable. You can build with larger profiles still, but there comes a point where it’s more style over substance.
The actual base is longer once the pedal deck is set. As explained in the videos the usual length is around 120 / 130cm. It depends if you’re going to have a fixed pedal deck or not.
I believe they’re 550/600mm. Try and measure around your needs. My personal rig has 500mm pillars for the wheel deck because my seating position is much lower.
I get the feeling from watching sim subject related utube video that you people in the UK and Europe live in small spaces. I see this all the time that space is at a premium
The UK is a small country with a high population density so physical space is at a much higher premium than places like the US or Australia. More £££ per spare foot. Some people use spare rooms for their rigs, but I work from home, so I don’t have that luxury.

And you never bolt a monitor stand to your rig duh. All the vibration goes right to shaking the monitor 🤣 always mount the stand to its own separate legs

I would love to build with 8020 but it's surprising how quickly the cost adds up (it would be more than 5 times the cost of my home made alloy rig)

I would recommend not having the screen mount bolted to the rig.. otherwise vibration will piss you right off!
No vibration my end - very solid. If anything it would actually help anchor a lighter-weight rig.

‘standard’ 80/20 rigs are usually 1300mm long. You’d be fine with the dimensions used in my builds, especially if the pedals are length-adjustable.
