Onion & Garlic Toxicity

  • Garlic, onion, chives and leeks all cause damage to dog and cat red blood cells, with garlic being the most toxic, then onions, then chives, then leeks. Because of the concentration, granules are worse than flakes and flakes are worse than the fresh produce. Although any amount damages red cells, either higher amounts or low grade continuous amounts can damage enough cells to cause severe anemia.

Thank you. There is a vet (I don't want to mention names) has a TH-cam channel saying you can give a small amount of garlic to your dog or cat.

My dog has both all the time, in small amounts; she's very healthy. She is large though, not a small dog like this vet is holding. But I do keep my cat away from them.

If anyone is wondering, a little bit (like the top part of a pinky finger) is not going to hurt your dog. Garlic powder is the WORST, and even that amount will probably hurt your dog. Normal garlic, in the quantity and size I just mentioned will most probably NOT hurt your dog. Do not feed garlic to your dogs or cats. If you have, accidentally, refer to the first sentence of this comment and then act accordingly. The best thing that you can do in this situation is to involuntarily make your dog throw up. You can do this by giving your dog "stale" treats (by "stale" I mean the dog treats that have been opened for 1-2 days) and he will most likely throw up. If you don't have any "stale" treats, use anything that will not harm your dog past the point of throwing up.

I just spoke with a vet and they said onion is way worse than garlic.. and out of fresh onions, fresh garlic cloves, onion powder and garlic powder.. garlic powder is the LEAST toxic out of them all.

Both my Papillion Chihuahuas each ate about 1 teaspoon of cooked onions. Is that considered a toxic amount if they weight about 8 lbs each? I had no idea onions were poisonous to dogs. I’m worried and don’t know if I should take them to the vet. It’s been 24 since they are them and they seemed to be active and acting normal.

Doing some research on my own. Garlic is non toxic to dogs in moderation. You would have to feed a 10 lb dog 7 cloves of garlic with every meal for over a week to cause toxicity. If anyone is worried like i was because my dog ate half a clove of garlic. Dont go off google. Watch all the youtube vids. People feed there dogs garlic daily as it has health benifits. Heck if you read ingredients on all the high quality dog food one of the ingredients is garlic.

@Kybele Augusta a simple google search would help you. not because your dog ate some and SEEMED fine means a veterinarian is lying. they are toxic to cats and dogs. your foods were seasoned with garlic and onions, but maybe not in high quantities enough for it to get noticably sick.
human biology and diet requirements are COMPLETELY different to that of dogs. we are omnivorous, they are carnivorous. Even grapes and raisins can kill dogs quickly. I had a dog that died after eating some raisins when I was a kid. i was eating raisin bread and picked out the raisins and fed him because he wanted to eat with me and bam, later that night sick, next day dead by the time the vet arrived.
