I first heard this great song in 1983 as I drove to work early in the morning on BBC Radio 1. I laughed at and revelled in the lyrics as I had recently broken up with my girlfriend of 4 years- reason- she said she was tired of me always wanting to kiss her! 39 odd years later, I have no idea what brought the memory of the song back, but took a chance to see if it was on this platform. Lo and behold it was and my 25 year old daughter bolted from her nook asking me who it was. Her face incredulous when I told her of the age and significance of the song. 'Whats wrong with kissing, Dad? Mum says she feels special when you kiss her"- this even after 27 years together. The songs of our youth are woven into our history in good, bad and indifferent times. This is one of those special songs for me. Thanks for posting.

20 years old here and had this on loop since overhearing it in a quiet Manchester bar nearly a year ago. So campy and fun!! A perfect example of why this decade in music will never be topped. I remember almost spitting out my drink at "Remember you cannot get pregnant from kissing!"

Very under rated song, song came out in one of the best eras for music and for me the greatest year of the eighties, 1983, for me this song and Tantalise, Jimmy the hoover, new song Howard Jones, along with the never ending great number ones that year.
Thank you Lynn and Carley for a unique song and memory of my fav year.

A colleague of mine brought the LP over to Singapore in 1983 where we were working at the time. I was blown away by how catchy and funny the whole album was. I bought it when I was back in the UK a year later and still have in my 'small but essential' collection of vinyl records.

Getting ready for school one morning back in 1983 I remember seeing Lynn Goldsmith being interviewed on BBC 'Breakfast Time' about this song, she was talking about and giving a demonstration of the vocoder device she used to deepen her voice for the narrative of this track.

Such a wonderful and unique record. Not only in the aural sense but also with its ground breaking video. I was 12 years old in the autumn period of 1983 - but the song and it's lyrics never escaped me. When I had my first serious girlfriend some years later - upon our first passionate kiss - Will Powers was firmly whispering in my ear...Are you kissing with confidence??.....It's now 39 years since this hit the charts in the UK and I love it just as much now as I did then - and I've been Kissing with confidence ever since! 😎 x

I was 12 years old that fall but I don't recall hearing this. You guys were luckier over in the U.K.
That spring of 1983, I lucked into going out with the girl I had a huge crush on. We went to the end-of-year dance at our middle school and she was keen to have a kiss. Oops, I was like the dog who chases the car. What do you do when you've finally caught it? I was petrified as she pulled me down a deserted hallway and demanded that I kiss. I managed to stand there like a wooden Indian while she planted a couple on me and then scurried back into the gym where the dance was being held. She dumped me a couple weeks later, but I was probably more relieved than anything else. If only I'd heard this damn song first!

WOW.You have this on vinyl-of course. Some great notalgia. And YES.....The 80's.Many would probably disagree about it being the best, but i sure have some good memories! Born in 73,my first kiss was in the 80's.And i don't think it was done with confidence ha ha.
BTW.I only arrived here,as i was reading a book which said when this song first came out in 83,Carly Simon was the 'uncredited' vocalist.Listening now,her voice is utterly unmistakable.
I hope you can enjoy this decade.=/....=D.

The book is called 'The boy in the song'-the real stories behind 50 classic pop songs. It's the companion book to 'the girl in the song'.
I was reading about Carly Simon's 'Your so vain'
and the ongoing mystery of who it's about.
Though many think it's Warren Beatty-as indeed,he did.A mystery it shall remain,i think.
      'Cause she ain't telling!

Thanks for such a quirky and uplifting group of songs lynn!
Ironic and funny too. This particular song reminds me of being 15 in 1983 in Leicester, England and girls and parties and having no responsibilities.
Carly Simon’s vocals a delight. But I remember the main narrative voice jarring with me as it sounded like a drag queen (not that I have anything against them at all!) and as a provincial 15 year old I guess it was too out there for me x

Frankly, this album will forever be emblazoned on my mind. When I had my first food service business in the the late 80's in Southern California, I would play this tape in my car on the way to important sales calls. While I believe it is some what tongue and cheek, the lyrics of wisdom served to inspire me to achieve important goals. I heard "make it happen!" and I did. Thank you for a wonderful album of music!

She was so ahead of her time...Though I need to confess: The effects now look a little like every Indian wedding video I saw circa 1991. Lynn Goldsmith was well ahead of her time- she shattered glass ceiling and got the best people to work on Dancing for Mental Health. I love all her music and videos- how the heck are they all so undiscovered?

    • @lynn-goldsmith
      @lynn-goldsmith  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

one explanation is people don't always like to accept that we can do more than one thing - I appreciate your acknowledgement that I was ahead of my time - people seem not to acknowledge that I wrote music, made videos, produced the record - ( they like to think Todd did it ) they think I just asked my friends to do all this for me ! so because it's hard to understand how I a well known photographer could make a record - it didn't get the press here etc . Maybe the world just wasn't ready for it then - sure can use some Dancing for Mental Health now though! keep smiling - cheers Lynn and Will

What can one say about this song that has'nt already been said?
Kissing with confidence has totally stood the test of time!
Imagine how ancient in 1983 a song almost 41yrs old would sound?
But 41 yrs later this sounds totally modern and still cool and lightly humorous too.
I guess linn drum helped a bit lol
Lynns interesting use of the eventide harmonizer pitch shifting explored an alternative not previously explored sonics wise commercially, or even gender wise. It really worked! And it was positive too.
I'm from the Uk and 1983 was a treasure trove of great standout tracks this being one.
Over christmas 83 haircare brand (uk division) VO5 used this as the base of their ad at the time which i saw watching tv am mornings lol.
81' was the year we got proper way forward, fantastic polished electronic music from human league Dollar soft cell etc in the uk charts, but 83 was the yr pop just evolved to a upper level of consciousness i feel, and summer autumn 83' was terrific and so many new styles and electronics and more substance was all there, its like we lept 10 yrs in only 2 at that time.
Heres just a tiny fraction of great songs around at the time.
Jimmy the hoover, Tantalize, Malcom mcclaren, Double dutch.
Freeze, iou, Ryan paris, dolce vita, Eurithmics, who's that girl?
Level 42, sun goes down, Heaven 17, come live with me.
David grant, stop and go , The police, every breath you take
Limahl, only for love, Tracey ullman, they don't know
Will powers, kissing with confidence, The human league, Fascination, The Cure, the walk, Roman holiday, don't try to stop it!! Culture club, church of the poisoned mind, Haysee fantaysee, shiny shiny, The belle stars, sign of the times, Matt fretton, dance it up!!!!
And Hazell dean, Searchin' hit the clubs along with hi nrg music too.
And a massive score more of brilliant music got us swayin' and thinkin' a bit more than we had before . such a colourful new exciting time to have lived,
and i'm so glad it still lives on in the people
lynn goldsmith's classy toon is one of the signitures of the year 1983 and indeed....Decade!!
    Brill stuff!

What a timeless classic! Used to listen to this before the school discos, back in the day, in the hope that I'd get to put the advice in to good practice! The early 80s was simply the best for funky pop music. Having Carly Simon on vocals is just sublime. Chapeau and thanks for the wonderful memories x

When I first heard this in the 80s I felt that this was a very unique sound , it was like I'd slipped into a parallel universe, I remember shopping in London and this came on in clothing store and I just had to smile

One of my favourite 1983 music videos. I've set up a playlist for music videos from that year, and I've put this near the top of the list because I like it so much. Here it is if you're interested: th-cam.com/play/PL6oCQqv2KW6WTjSBpavnnkILla2nhwwrV.html

When this first came out, as a kid, I wondered: who was this beautiful woman, why did she sound exactly like Carly Simon? Pre-internet the identity of who was behind this fantastic song - and the accompanying album - would elude little ol' me. And then one day I found out who made this record, finally! All the incredible talent that worked on it, too! A great song, clever, funny, ahead of it's time and yet so of it's time. Bravo, Lynn!

I remember listening to this in the 80s. I had bought an 80s compilation tape off eBay, I put it in my walkman(yes it's 2023 and I still have a Walkman). This song came on the tape and I found myself singing along to it. Great song!

So great to find this classic here...I will never forget "Kissing With Confidence" - somehow entrenched in my early teenage electronica memories alongside all the early classic electro-pop artists...Fashiøn, Human League, Ultravox, Gary Numan, John Foxx, Thomas Dolby, Heaven 17, Landscape, Depeche Mode, OMD, Laurie Anderson, New Musik, Sparks, Howard Jones, Classix Nouveaux, After The Fire, Blancmange, Art Of Noise, A Flock Of Seagulls ... ahh that era 79-85...a beautiful era of electro-pop innovation...early sampling instruments...with the Synclavier & Fairlight CMI.
