In North America, back in the 80s, we thought "Venus" was their one-hit wonder. Than it was later in life that we became aware of other songs: "Robert De Niro's Waiting" and even better than that: "I Heard a Rumour and Cruel Summer." After that we found out "Venus" was an original by Shocking Blue from 1969 which sounds awesome!
@@BouchIsOnTheLoose702 Some of us in North America actually knew them from their Fun Boy Three days in the early 80's. I always thought this was their best song. By the time Venus came out I wasn't really even into them anymore. I do still have this album though:)
It's a very nice song, very nearly ruined by their really awfully weak voices.
It's like listening to three kittens at the far end of a room who, yes, can hold a tune - but sing all on one level, forget putting any dynamics behind it, let alone power.

Heard this on the radio today......and straightaway I was 12 years old again. Listening to it whilst doing my homework or making sure I'd packed my football boots for PE the next day, talking about Bananarama to some of the other lads at school, not knowing who Robert De Niro was (but not caring!), and really not having a worry in the world. 39 years ago now.....but seems more like 39 days in some ways. Weren't we lucky to have grown up with sheer, flawless pop like this one?

80s pop at its best, god they were all so easy on the eye
Peaked at an INCREDIBLY low No. 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984 for just two weeks. GREAT song.

The Hot 100 in those days was such a crap shoot. If a popular DJ in New York or LA liked your song, it got airplay. Smaller markets looking to NY and LA for cues would follow suit. And of course airplay drove sales. If no one in a position of influence heard or liked your record, it "bubbled under" into obscurity. A lot of great songs met that fate.

80's music, especially the mid- late 80's made many of us very happy children. I too can very much vouch for that.
Funky upbeat song with sad, dark lyrics. "A walk in a park can become a bad dream, people are staring and following me, this is my only escape from it all, watching a film or a face on a wall." The girl is so terrified of the horrors that lie outside her house that she'd rather escape into fantasy than face reality cause it's so scary. The song is about escapism. Escaping the dark reality of life. So I think that's why the song is so upbeat despite the dark lyrics cause the girl wants to feel happy again so she disassociates from her reality into her fantasy land and the upbeat sounds that accompany the lyrics reflect her desire to escape from the horrors of reality.
