  • I've fixed up 4 small hand tools I found in a basement clean-out. Its the same clean-out I found the Disston No. 12, with the broken handle: • Disston No 12 Restoration They ended up being nice tools, not so much "trash to treasure," as "trash to functional."
    Putty Knife
    I. P. Hyde Tools, Southbridge, Mass., history and catalogs: hydetools.com/... 1935 Catalog describes the Putty Knife as “Unbreakable” Super HYDEX Steel, Model No. 5S (Stiff) “Rosewood Handle, 3 Brass Tubular Rivets, No Bolster, Blade width 1 1/2 inch” [1935 Catalog Pg 3, at the link above]
The 1928 Catalog describes this model the same way, but further clarifies the type of rosewood used as “Cocobolo.” The images on the putty knives, seem to indicate the two directional grinding they use on the face (visible on the putty knife I have; along the blade at the tip, and across the blade near the handle. About 2/3 - 1/3 respectively. [1928 Catalog Pg 26, at the link above]
Isaac P. Hyde was a contemporary of Dexter Harrington, of the D. Harrington & Son cutlery company, which also had their factory in Southbridge, Mass, and who manufactured the knife restored in this video. More about the knife below.
This is the nicest putty knife I own, by far.
    Round Nose Pliers
Alloy Artifacts’ page on the Utica Drop Forge & Tool Company: alloy-artifacts... lists these Round Nose Pliers, as Utica No. 21 - 4 1/2; probably manufactured between 1945 and 1960.
In 1956, the Utica, New York company was purchased by the Kelsey-Hayes Company and continued production under the Utica name. In 1961, Utica was merged (by its parent company) with the newly acquired Herbrand Automotive Tool, to form Utica-Herbrand. In 1962, Utica-Herbrand moved to Orangeburg, South Carolina.
I found the Utica No. 21 - 4 1/2 Round Nose Pliers listed in this Utica catalog from 1968, showing its original model no. as well as the new model no. U-16611: archive.org/de... [Catalog Pg. 10, which describes the pliers as “Used by radio repairmen, jewelers and opticians.”]
    Knife
While it’s unclear if this knife originally started out as a meat knife, a shoe knife, or something else, like a paperhanger’s knife, it was definitely made by the D. Harrington & Son company of Southbridge, Massachusetts. It either broke and was ground down, or has just been sharpened so many times it no longer has its original shape. I’m guessing it was the former, as the tip of the knife was pretty beat up, and so may have been bent and straightened out before being ground down into what looks a lot like an all purpose knife for things like cutting cord and sharpening pencils. (That's what I'll probably use it for.)
Within five years of the Great Depression, Harrington merged with the Russell Green River Knife Works to form Russell-Harrington. In 1968 Hyde Manufacturing (yes, the putty knife guys, above) purchased Russell-Harrington, and 2001 changed the company’s name to Dexter-Russsell: www.dexter1818...
More information about the D. Harrington & Son Cutlery Company is available in “The Old Sturbridge Village Visitor” Fall/Winter 2015 Issue, pg. 4: www.osv.org/co...
    Awl
No marks on this awl. I’m guessing its was for punching or stabbing holes because of its short size and the shape of the handle. Maybe leather work or book binding? Anyone knows, leave a comment.

Good job. Just the correct amount of restore. You didn't try to make them look brand new, you left them as good, clean looking, older tools.
Also appreciate that you saved an old putty knife that most would have thrown away. And you found a Rosewood handle in the process!

Thanks KB, this was a fun project and just cleaning them up and getting them back into service is my goal. I like to hear that their age still shows! Thanks for watching and for commenting! Rosewood was definitely a bonus. This putty knife is the stiff bladed version shown in the catalog.
