Piano Battaglia - Monte Mufara - Madonie Park - Sicily

Piano Battaglia, altitude m. 1572 above sea level, in the heart of Madonie Mountains, Sicily. This is a flat plateau embedded among Carbonara peak (m. 1979) and Mufara massif (m. 1865), a wonderful site inside the Madonie Natural Park, a treasure of biodiversity where it is easy to meet foxes, fallow deers and a great variety of birds. In winter here is possible to ski along 5 kilometres of slopes thanks to the new chairlift but in Spring or Summer this is a perfect location for trekking lovers thank to several well signposted trails that start from the plateau towards the peaks of the surrounding mountains.
In this short film, I’ll show you one of this pathway, starting from Piano Battaglia to the top of the Mufara, a wonderful itinerary into the beech forest offering some spectacular landscapes. From the peak, in a clear day, the 360° degrees view wanders from the Madonie Mountains around you, the lake of Piano Zucchi in the valley below and far from you to the Sicilian inlands, the Tyrrhenian sea northwards and the enormous Etna eastside. Absolutely unforgettable!
In Piano Battaglia is located the Rifugio Marini, a guesthouse managed by the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), where you can collect maps of the park and trails and ask for more information. To overnight in the Rifugio is a good idea, both to start your excursion early in the morning and to live the mountains at night. Don’t forget to book in advance, anyway!
This is essentially a 4k video, filmed mostly with a GoPro Hero 7, except few footage with my Olympus Om-D EM5 MKII. Photos are by Francesca Sparatore with her Nikon D3100. Post-production and editing with I-Movie.
