If you ask me, a simple artist, what I usally do is this:
Don't go with the flow. Find what interests you and work on it, it doesn't have to be the most unique thing ever, do it for yourself, and you'll eventually get an audience.

What I've learned 10 years as an artist. Follow your interests. Be devoted to them. The more alien they are to your practice the better. Study it deeply learn the history and the amazing lives attached to it. Take notes and specifically any thought you have of what might be a new idea or a "what if". The what ifs are what you're looking for. That's your "Original idea".

If anyone is interested in the body-mind connection aspect of Yukio Mishima and the Japanese viewpoint of it, The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, a book by the legendary undefeated ronin samurai is great as well.
Goes into his style of fighting (Like fighting with two swords) but really emphasizes the point of being strict and such. Not a very long book, but a really cool one.

The Henry Rollins method sounds great. I think the reason I feel stuck with my own art is because I tend to consume the same things over and over again and Im too lazy to try something new. Thanks!
