- Watch Part 1: • The Reoffenders Who Ca...
In this episode of Rule Britannia, VICE meets "Saky's Finest"-a gang of young reoffenders based on the Saxton Road estate in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Locked into a cycle of reoffending and going to jail, some of these guys have spent so much of their childhood in Young Offenders' Institutes that they'd rather be back inside than in the real world.
20-year-old Coopz is looking at a serious stretch in adult jail after being recently bailed in connection with the attempted robbery of a local shop. Ross and Nathan, who at 27 are considered the "olders" of the group, both try to stop him from going down the same paths they did.
We also meet Pitts, arguably the most institutionalized member of the gang, who has only seen the outside world for a matter of weeks in the last six years. Now out, he just wants to have fun, get pissed and fight-as well as settling an old score with Reggie, the local store owner, for something that happened 12 years ago.

Seeker 2.1 how can you spend 35 minutes staring into the lives of these kids and learning about the environment that breeds this kind of behavior, and still say stuff like that? not one of them asked for anything in the whole show. everyone of them admitted to knowing they're in the wrong and agreed with serving their time. Why bother with a documentary trying to help you understand these people if you aren't going to try to understand them?

I left the uk a year ago and was feeling home sick lately. After watching this it quickly passed.
So ironic when near the beginning their talking about how nice the peace and quiet is even though they were the ones being loud and committing crime in built up areas and influencing other people's lives in negative ways who can't afford to more to areas where crime is not a such a big problem

The truest comment on here, I can tell that like me you live amongst this and can see the truth behind it all. How this generation is literally a lost generation. We don't know nothin about our roots all we know is how to create a drama with one another and the happy life seems like the one you have to live through hedonistic activities that lead to addictions and that's the price you pay it's either that or you're miserable like the rest of them. I'm not saying that's the case but that's the general perception of this generation, I just see more and more kids turning into fiends and horrible individuals because it's all lost to drink and drugs. These people need community initiatives (i.e. government funded with more state involvement) like sports community centers, or some other positive activities that keep them off the streets and instill in them positive values, like discipline and mutual respect. Some of them clearly need psychiatric help, which is a health issue that only government can deal with. The reverse is currently happening thanks to Austerity policies.

Amanda Lee Dube Everything outside of London is very similar. If you don't live there, it's genuinely difficult to tell the difference between different towns. To some extent, that goes for a number of the people as well, and in media it's a re-occurring motif. The idea that there is those like sackie's finest isn't even new, really. You could see it with youth culture going back decades. The cloths and the music changes, but some people still band together like this. Go check out This is England, it's a film that was made recently and is set in the early 80s during the Falklands. It's striking how similar this documentary and that film are, and from a number of people I've chatted and from reviews I've read, that film really hits home for people who grew up through that. Thanks to Maggie's focus on London, and history in general, that city developed quite differently from the rest of the UK. I could be wrong, but that's my impression based academic study and personal interest.

We need some way to identify what they would like to get out of life and then help them achieve that, rather than keep them in a box and chuck them out every so often.

Coopz's girlfriend seems like a nice girl. Then you hear what she has to say about her boyfriend and you think... oh dear, not much going on in the brains department. Yeah I feel for the youth of today. I'm 43 I served 10 year, collectively, through the early 90's to mid naughties. 2 month out her, a week out there. Personally I miss the old camaraderie, which make me a fool. Because it's a fools game. Took me 30 to figure it out.
I was a Deputy Sheriff and Corrections Officer for many years here in the US and we have almost exactly the same things going on. These kids have their river, and my County includes Acadia National Park. Does a certain class of individual appreciate the park as anything but a target for predation? Nope. That's all it is to them. Trash it when they're drunk or pissed off, steal from the tourists or poach when they're semi-sober.
Relationships are similar, too. Visiting hours at our jail would often have two or three women visiting the same guy - all of them abused by him, and all of them with a kid by him. They all knew each other, too.
Here's what our GOTPers will hate to admit, although they're well aware of it: almost all of these US punks are teabaggers! Yup, the same ignorance and stupidity that controls their daily lives informs their voting. Let's cut some more from the school budgets!

They are out, young, uneducated (through choice by the way there are schools and options,it's not Beirut) and they arey easily influenced. Looking up to older (slightly) people who boast about the trouble they've been in (probably embellishing it a little on the way) - adding 'don't walk in my path bruv'..Meaning 'im hard-you couldn't handle it..The younger generation ( the age gaps are smaller between 'grown-up's and 'kids' in these communities as they often have kids at 15-17 years old - kids themselves raising kids..so there's LOADS OF FUCKING KIDS!! ). This leads to the use of weapons..These kids are scared and not natural fighters but they have to 'keep their rep and not bitch out blood'..This thing with knives is cowardly and reflects the fact they are really scared children, puffing out their chests, leaning on a'crutch' of drink and drugs. One real 'bad apple' can influence ,say another 5-6 people.Half of which are going along with their peers, half are truely impressed and/or want to impress them back and show their metal.. Add lack of education, lack of motivation, young parents who are still growing up themselves - either being bad or No influence at all by being absent, neglect and domestic abuse, showing bad examples by continuing to commit crimes, revelling in their 'achievements' in violent and anti-social behaviour or the women having babies by different fathers - all these parental fascets I put down the the age of the parents, also often having parents themselves that are barely older ( i've seen kids with GRAND MOTHERs in their mid to late 30's !!) ..Add 'peer pressure'..and a big dose of IDIOCY, lack of foresight and the ignorance of youth (and being a bit thick) and you have a never ending scenario that plays out up and down the country....I don't buy this 'nothing to do shit' . This is Oxford........ not Beirut :-)..(.there really is nothing to do for kids in Beirut!) .If you gave them the choice of say- football, arts whatever, they'd still wanna drink, fuck and play up. A small minority may have been wanting to leave the cycle of bullshit and use schemes set up to get out - that makes it worth doing. But there is now a culture,or a subculture that has always been there, it's just their numbers have grown and we get more annoyed with them now as we give them free shit that they don't deserve out of taxes we pay whilst working..Blair started this 'lifestyle' of BENIFIT BRITAIN. Making getting benefits easy.Literally showing you how to claim, everyone who didnt want to work was now on 'disability' , suddenly siscovering they had ME or back problems..Most havent worked since 1997 when he came to power. Families with generations of benefit 'scrounging'..Years ago they would have been roaming slum areas, the way housing is structured today brings them in conflicts with other groups...like me!! .. Fuck, these idiots will fight , well stab-very few can or have the bravery to 'fight'-they will 'jump' people in great numbers like packs of wolves or stab and take someones life because they live on a different street,across a dividing road or small hillock..any excuse. It's a fantasy world..then they go to prison at a young age for it and people die for it., they limit and handicap their options and future, maybe it is lack of guidance, but the options are there..surely prison isn't that desirrable whatever they say... they come out , people 'big up and respect man dem..' aND SO IT GOES..ON AND ON..FOREVER. Don't tell me all these, well, children really, are psycho killers, they are scared kids under peer pressure. Getting carried away playing gangsta as their tattooed, pit-bull carrying pappy did just years earlier. So-for the the old skoool G's and old time rude boys of Oxford -I beg, put your kids (or if that's too late) your kids kids right and when you tell your stories (if you must) of violence and criminality, don't sell it as something to be proud of or achieve. Putting 'but dont tread in my shoes' does not suffice. Notoriety is loneliness, after all, when your locked up or dead -no one cares. After a while they even may forget you. there is NOTHING HARD, TOUGH OR STRONG ABOUT STABBING SOMEONE OR SETTING ON SOMEONE IN A GANG. It's cowardly and cheap and KARMA IS A BITCH !
