  • The first five weeks of basic training is comple and the recruits return to Catterick to complete the rest of the course: hand-to-hand combat with their bayonet knife, how to shoot live ammunition, and how their bodies react to exposure to CS gas.
    With hundreds of British soldiers killed fighting in Afghanistan, why do young men want to join the army?

    Many moons ago I was a young L/Cpl in 2 Para. I decided to leave after serving 4 years. One week before I was due to end my Military Career my Father passed away. I lasted two weeks in Civvy Street and went back in and served another 10. Spent the next 20 years as a Bobby. 68 now and still miss it.

      Similar story. I was actually still on pre-release leave. My mum died early of cancer. I rang the battalion asking to come back. 6 weeks later I walked back into the Corporals Mess. I’ve never felt more at home. Good luck mate.

      If you don't mind answering, what are job prospects like after serving in the infantry?

    • @RalphBrooker-gn9iv
      @RalphBrooker-gn9iv 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@leonrussell9607 If that’s to me, I served 78-90. 4 Banner tours. I enjoyed it. But could not adjust to civvy st. Two pre-release courses were offered: brick laying abs driver ! I can’t speak for the modern generation. In France, ICYI, infantry soldiers are prepared during their careers for life after service. They do the equivalent of A-Levels. My advice for a young man thinking infantry is plan big; make it a full career; do All Arms Commando and/or P Coy. Think of those as real qualifications. I learned in my regiment if you give 100% you get the jackpot if you put in 99% you get absolutely nothing. For me the infantry is a one way ticket. I loved serving in Northern Ireland. I suffered. Lost friends. Friends lost bits. But strangely I loved it. Few share those experiences. And that’s why, whatever the army can give you to prepare for civvy st, there’ll always be a hole.

    It's a horrible feeling when you're told "this is where you're going, and there's fuck all you can do about it". It does ease, you do crack on, but it's the initial gut-wrenching disappointment that gets you. If you can stick it out, you realise it gets better. Part of being in the military is being able to turn a shit situation into a positive one as quickly as you can.

    Absolute respect to the lads & lasses serving & the lads that stayed in training knowing 100% they're going to fight at some point.
    When you do go for the first time all that training just kicks in & you totally forget your trepidation. It's their decision but they should have realised they were being trained by the absolute best, no stone is left unturned with regards to your training -- they've far more chance, given that training, surviving a confrontation than the enemy.
