How to access the config file :
1-Win key + R
2-Type %localappdata% in the run window
3-go to Remedy\Alan Wake2
enderer.ini and open the renderer file with any text editor.
(false = Off, true = On)
"m_bLensDistortion" : lens distortion effect
"m_bVignette" : Vignette effect
"m_bDepthOfField" : Depth Of Field effect
"m_eSSAAMethod" : Changes Anti Aliasing method (0=No AA, 1=FXAA, 2=DLSS, 3=FSR)
"m_fSSAASharpening" : Controls the amount of sharpening.
"m_fFieldOfViewMultiplier" : This increases FOV as you raise it , max amount is 2.0.
(After changing the FOV , you have to enter the graphics settings menu and back out for it to take effect, It resets on reload & death so just enter the graphics menu again).

With the new updates, they changed the names of the options of Post Processing; 'Low' before is now 'Medium.' Despite the name change, this setting still has the same significant performance impact as before, so keep it at Medium.

After seeing your Lords of the Fallen coverage, it's no surprise that you have produced yet another exceptional optimization guide. Nicely done!
Speaking about that..I'd like to see a shorter video with the unreal engine 5 unlocker..you can enable virtual shadow maps with that, which are disabled by default and makes shadows way more accurate.
Post processing, volumetric lighting and transparency are by far the settings that affect performance the most, so if you're encountering lots of stuttering especially in open areas, make sure you set these to the lowest setting for a smoother experience
Really appreciate your videos. Not only is the testing exhaustive, but you seem to actually know what you're talking about and you describe/understand the settings correctly. A lot of people don't know what a lot of these settings actually do, and since I've been a game dev for 15 years and am intimately familiar with all of them, it can be frustrating watching other videos where they just guess at what they think a setting does.
Man, I was looking forward to this video the whole day and you did not disappoint! Thank you, best AW2 optimization guide out there, I even like it better than the Digital Foundry one. Turns out that when you tweak the settings a bit, the game is not as heavy to run as it seems and it's a really small compromise to visual quality. Truly outstanding!
Digital Foundry will have yet Optimized settings. I'm still waiting for Alex's video to explain to people why this games is so good looking at least when played on highest settings. Great video though. I'm subscribed.

Man, that Depth of field thing was bugging me hard... I don't like it in any game, but here it was even worse. Everything flickers and shimmers when it's on. Happy that this is gone now, everything is very clear and detailed and no shimmering, thanks to this channel.

I popped open the game two days ago and was disappointed by the performance on the same gpu, and didn't have the patience to try and mix and match the settings (especially that I noticed running into this problem where tuning the settings multiple times specifically DLSS, even after switching it to performance it works but the performance is horrible so a restart is needed.I've actually seen some people talking about having the same issue)

Nice vid, it really help me out with my 6600 gpu. I was also tired of how the game look like a bit blurry so I edited the render ini and gosh it def looks way better.

I have a RTX 4080 and even with DLSS quality I need to optimize in order to reach 60ish frames across the board with path tracing. Especially in the forest. The forest is a GPU killer.

The post-processing quality Has huge improvements to image quality when using upscalers, especially fsr, when used on high the post processing effects are applied post-upscaling, so it gets rid of a lot of the shimmering mainly present when using fsr even in it's quality mode, hence the noticeable impact on performance.

Great upload. The general store area (at night), in the Culdron Lake camping grounds, was the most demanding area for me. I like how this game does not need a high frame rate to be immersive.

pretty good! im playing with my 3090 i was using dlss quality at ultra settings not rt, and with saga chapters sometimes it dropped around mid 50 max 90 or so now im doing alan wake part and used ur guide im getting 110-140 fps now!

The game does a good job in its provided presets in graphics menu. The settings you've mentioned are almost similar to the medium preset with some small differences. This is by far the most demanding game I've come across.
You are my number 1 youtuber for the optimized settings. Always waiting for you videos before start playing 🙂
Volumetric Lighting High to Medium is a solid 7-10fps gain, I think same goes for Post Processing.

Seeing those awfully grainy SSR on Low I'm thinking it's either High or Off for those.
Great work! Digital Foundry for some reason released an Optimized Settings video but it's trying to match the PS5, that's not what optimized settings means. You also included config file tweaks which is going above and beyond.
I also came across your Remnant II video as well. DF is releasing more videos on console versions which I don't care about.
