Seriously glossed over Stephen's walking out on Cellmates. ""Citing stage fright and went abroad." He nearly checked out permanently. Perhaps he hadn't publicly admitted the suicide attempt, when this was recorded. Lot of respect for Fry's willingness to discuss his mental health issues in documentaries and interviews, especially after living with someone, for 15 years, who suffered from depression and anxiety. It's a horrible thing to witness and I can only imagine what it is like to live.
Thank you so much for uploading and sharing this!!! ❤ We had been looking all over for this to share with students. We kept coming back to TH-cam in the hope that someone would be kind enough to share this episode. Thank you.
I think Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry are probably the best double act we’ve ever had. And I’m someone who had adored Eric and Ern from the early sixties. In fact I saw Morecambe and Wise live on stage in London and it was fabulous. I really do hope Stephen and m’colleague find time to get together and maybe just do a one off special. We had the Reunited show which was great, but not the same as their sketch show.
As an American... it's a shame it took over 20+ years with the creation of TH-cam for me to enjoy A Bit of Fry and Laurie. I mean, Monty Python was always available to us in the states, not that Fry and Laurie's comedy is exactly on par with Python, but it didn't have to be for me and others to enjoy it back then when it aired or even a few years later. I imagine it's possible that it could have been on a BBC cable TV channel and I just never caught it. Of course, my introduction to Hugh Laurie was from House not knowing he was British until he was on a talk show where he used his true accent and A Bit of Fry and Laurie was subsequently mentioned during the interview. Regardless, I'm happy to be able to see it now at will.
I feel the same way about American shows I had always seen being referenced in other media but never got the chance to see it. Currently watching old SCTV episodes and loving it
in this world in this decade where mediocrity is the norm, we need more geniuses like these two. oh i will be super sad when these two dies that i know.
once they had established in HOUSE canon in the later seasons that the R Lee Ermy character wasn't House's biological father and that he wanted to find out who was, I held onto the tiniest hope til the end that it was going to turn out that House also had a half-brother from that true father, and Stephen Fry could've appeared to play him (and be smarter than him) and essentially be the Mycroft to House's Sherlock Holmes
@@EA-vd4gd Yeah this was aired in 2005 (based on the copyright in the last few seconds of the video), when House was just getting into season 1, and news of it had probably not carried back to the UK.
"Avoir du pois" (literal translation, to have some peas. Reasons why are lost to history) is a rather posh way of describing the weights system that uses pounds, ounces, hundredweights, etc rather than grammes, kilos and the like.
So interesting to see this retrospective of these 2 geniuses prior to Hugh becoming House.

Yeah, that wasn't public knowledge at the time this programme was made.
Adrian Edmonson during Bottom Live - "I'm beginning to understand why Stephen Fry fucked off." :D
Glossed over the director that worked on Jim’ll fix It . With the worlds west pedofile that people say they saw signs

'The key to dancercise, is the rather ingenious coupling of the word dance,... to the word circumcise...!'
Love these 2 together.

What a lovely friendship!

Yeah but Stephen is a very different man now isn't he.
Ah Frye is "Lord Snot" on The Young One's University Challenge. Love how top notch comedy is all intertwined & lift everyone.
0:48 ive never heard such an intense audience reaction that the sound redlines - incredible
It’s a pity we won’t get to see them as Vimes and Willikins from the Discworld books
They are the best!!

Good Lord, didn't you know about PBS?!?! My kids watched from age16, when they were old enough, and now they are 40. Sheesh.

Soupy twist!
I always thought that was such a fun ending to the show 😂
To this day, friends and I still say it before the first sip of a drink. Happy memories.
They never mention the radio show they had together for some reason
No mention of their sketches on Friday/Saturday Live.

And we are lucky you found each other
What about Saturday Night Fry on BBC home service?
The very best
I think Stephen is right about sketch comedy being a young man's game
2:34 Emma Thompson. Ding. Dong.
Yes Hugh and Emma were a thing, a long time ago …
What part did Stephen Fry have in “A Fish Called Wanda”?!
A bit part. Near the end.
@@scottandrewbrass1931So, somewhere in the Heathrow scene?
Hutchison. I looked it up on the public IMDB database
He played an airline passenger at Heathrow near the end. Kevin Klein knocks him unconscious and steals his ticket.
Recorded in 1997 or so? They are are great anyways
I think it was aired 2005 BBC series 3 episode 7
@@bennylloyd-willner9667 It says 2005 (actually MMV) in the end credits.
@@organfairy then we agree👍
The fact that they mentioned Oscar Wilde but not House and not even Gun Seller saddens me.
Pretty sure this aired before Hugh Laurie took on House and super stardom.

To try and mention everything they have done in the entertainment business in less than half an hour is pretty futile IMO
who the bleep is Jon Canter and who drove over his face? (0:53)
It's probably too far in the video for your attention span, but less than 10 minutes in, he is mentioned again...

When was rhis originally aired?
From previous responder to point above, 2005.
