Mariella Frostrup should be ashamed of herself in the way she treats this lovely self deprecating gentleman who gave so much of his soul just to make people laugh with his career, not to mention the moments of pathos even as early as Blackadder. He doesn’t take his talent or success for granted, strives so hard to deliver something with truth, that we really should pay respect to this level of soulful giving. Appreciation from an English major who loved and savoured all the parts he did in Britain, and only having seen a handful of House, but loved his work in the Night Manager 🥰🌹🌟
It just shows how we yearn for the exotic. As a Brit I never thought he was sexy - until he played House, and I was like hmmmm, he’s kind of hot in this, lol
Brilliant point he's making: "Storytelling requires a consensus of some kind of what is acceptable and what isn't and if you feel an audience sort of fractioning and starting to think utterly different things about the same piece of information, it makes almost any story hard to tell."
I was in the audience and I was getting so pissed off with the interviewer, she was really unprofessional, especially towards the end! Hugh did an amazing job though of course!
The amount of times she asks a question like she thinks she knows his answer, he quite politely and intelligently says no actually it was like this and then she rewords it as if to say no no you dont understand I said this 🤨
Maybe a tiny bit in that they're both very smart and insightful and verbally adept and kind of dry and sarcastic. But House would have ridiculed the interviewer and tried to do or say something to completely shock the audience. He wouldn't have played the interview 'game'.
Self deprecation is the most humane thing I can think of. If someone has that level of 3rd perspective and look at itself, comment, seeing the good and bad, and then laugh it off. I think the world will be slightly healthier.
Hugh Laurie is wonderful and amazing as always! I hate the way interviewers try to poke and prod him with all these uncomfortable questions too nosey they should be more gracious like he is!!! He's wonderful
This host was rather talkative/assertive in this interview. She went on and on, leaving Hugh ready to answer, but having to wait for her to LET him answer/discuss.
I cried when House ended, now I watch it on Tuesdays every week only. Thats what I got on TH-cam to watch and found alot of Interviews and have enjoyed every one!! Thank You Hugh Laurie, Your the Bomb!!!
Loved the thought that Hugh and Steven have not worked together again in order to avoid leaving the planet. Neither of those two gentlemen need worry about their immortality; they are unforgettable.
Oh wow, just when you thought she couldn't be more annoying, wait till you get near 40:30, she exceeded my expectation. Hugh good naturedly saved the awkward moments, just wish she wouldn't cut him off as often, or talk over him talking. Goodness me!!
just 2 min 50 sec in the video and i already see why you said that the interviewer took time out of her guantanamo job to do this interview. you are spot on. lol
I was lucky enough to see him perform in Burbank CA. Near where I reside with his old charity band "Band From T.V." and all I can say is he as loving and nice in person as he appears on screen and in public. An extremely self-depreciating and humble man.
I'm so lucky that my son is almost identical to him younger... same height, voice, accent, hair...it's really odd when we watch Jeeves and Wooster because we keep peeping across the room at him! He learnt some of the songs from it too which was hilarious! But I think Hugh or Stephen Fry would be gobsmacked if they saw him! He could definitely play a young Hugh.
@22.22 He spells row, and comments there’s only one spelling. I thought of fish roe. He’s a champion, I’ve been a fan as far back as I can remember. Of his massive amount of quality work I have to say I love his work on Blackadder most.
I'm abt to watch this and im VERY scared cause everyone's saying the interviewer is mean and Hugh is like my idol so I rlly hope she isn't that bad. Edit: Im like 17 minutes in and I absolutely despised her basically calling Hugh a sexist like no
Just in case you don't know, it's all OK. Mariella Frostrup and Hugh Laurie are the same vintage and are both British institutions who came to the fore of the 1980s. He did tread a little on her toes with that comment because he will have known that she has been a BBC Radio 4 presenter of a book review programme (Open Book) for a very long time (17 years by 2019). That said, I suspect he's correct, as publishers will know a lot more about sales demographics than a host of a show that reviews books and interviews authors. She did bite a bit, but then I think we prefer our presenters to have a bit of character rather than them being overly saccharine sweet or too sycophantic.
As a childhood Presbyterian (Mom's parents came from Lewis in the Hebrides); I found Mr. Laurie's comment about self-deprecation of interest, so I'll have to mull that one over?
House was in part a story about mental illness, addiction, and emotional pain. So it's funny that he talks about wanting to do that... I suppose the difference is that House always chooses life in the end.
I find it interesting that at this stage of his career his is continually asked about his salary on the series "House" and him being "Self Effacing" . We all carry emotional baggage but we don't need someone reminding us of it constantly. Hugh- tell your P.R. staff to tell interviewers not to bring either topic up!!
I really want to listen to this interview because I adore Hugh Laurie but the interviewer attacking him the entire time was distracting and it was pissing me off
@17:13 I am getting so tired of this kind of talk. Any sentence one utters apparently needs to go through a filter to see if someone could possibly get offended.
That was NOT a good interviewer and it shows. Can't believe the restraint on Hugh's part... Moving on from that though, some nice answers and a definite maybe on new plans with Stephen. That would be really great to see...
Ms Frostrup is just appalling in this. Unnecessarily and bizarrely antagonistic, not letting him speak, re-wording her questions to entice him to answer differently, finishing his sentences for him, insulting him... Nasty cues taken from the BBC's aggressive interview style for politicians, seemingly. Why? Uncomfortable car crash of an interview. Kudos to Hugh for his composure and bonhomie in the face of an unpleasant onslaught at times.
in more than one occasion, she is trying to convince hugh with her opinion about his career, and when he disagrees, quite politely, she just keeps on insisting.... unbearable
"A problem with your microphone" == "We need to go off air so we can tell you not to say anything that we might get sued about concerning women and men liking different books."
What's she talking about, House was hilarious? She's not a great interviewer. Her sloppy sitting is not respectful either. Hugh Laurie is always great to hear.
Blows my mind that in all these TH-cam vids of Hugh not one person has mentioned him ageing or looking older, if Hugh was a female it would be all everyone talked about.
I grew up with 3 channels & then it became colour,too...He forgot that we had to get up & cross the room to change those 3 channels. The good news ? Ya didnt hafta surf too long to find something else
This interviewer simply could not contain herself. I often felt like Hugh was being masterful at patience with her.

Why are you the way that you are
Hugh being a gentleman that he is
He is still pretty damn hot! His wittiness and intelligence makes him so and his looks don´t hurt!
Man he is!
I could literally listen to this guy talk for hours. 😃🙂 * sighs *

This is one of the most abrasive interviewers I have ever seen! Why is she fighting with him 😂
You’re absolutely right! We never got to find out what his favourite colour is.
Glaven Maven i already know is green .
Dont worry mariella is well known and generally liked...he is ok with her
I was in the audience and I was getting so pissed off with the interviewer, she was really unprofessional, especially towards the end! Hugh did an amazing job though of course!

the last guy that asked the question should've done the whole interview
An asset to humanity, with a good mind in all respects.
Hugh's answers were something house would have said.
Such an Icon he is.Brain, humour and humanity💕

Love Hugh to bits man. His work means so much to me. Incredible man and artist in general.
Oh, yes. Hugh would be a great Sherlock!
House was essentially Sherlock. He lives at 221b, his name is a synonym for homes, James Wilson Vs John Watson.
Hugh Laurie is wonderful and amazing as always! I hate the way interviewers try to poke and prod him with all these uncomfortable questions too nosey they should be more gracious like he is!!! He's wonderful

I fall asleep to House MD every night and have for years. It is truly therapeutic for me. 💗
Hugh makes me incredibly happy and I know I’m not alone which makes every award he receives including the OBE and CBE
I LOVE Hugh Laurie
I am in awe of his many talents!
What an unpleasant woman. He's such a gentleman.
I just love Hugh, I can listen to him all day
Loved him in House,Great actor
Loved the thought that Hugh and Steven have not worked together again in order to avoid leaving the planet. Neither of those two gentlemen need worry about their immortality; they are unforgettable.

Hugh's commentary about needing a unified consensus in an audience is exceptionally insightful for a TH-cam interview.
Renaissance man.
This was good interview. I like that Laurie went to other directions than just talked about his roles. Very interesting and deep interview.
Hugh Laurie, what a dude. Unfortunate the interviewer took time out of her schedule of interrogation at Guantanamo to take this job.
just 2 min 50 sec in the video and i already see why you said that the interviewer took time out of her guantanamo job to do this interview. you are spot on. lol
Lmao
I don’t agree, she didn’t keep butting in as many interviewers do, and she asked different questions to the norm. I think she was good.
@@dragonzak She was obviously trained by the KGB.
So true, among other things!
What he says about politics and the dress is so true.
Many good points were made by him worth revisiting. You could flesh each of them into standalone documentaries.
House is a brilliant piece of work no secnd thought
I'm gonna die without meeting HL😔

I love this brilliant man x
For your convenience, here is the TL;DR of Hugh's comments in this video:
.
"It's not Lupus."
@22.22 He spells row, and comments there’s only one spelling.
I thought of fish roe.
He’s a champion, I’ve been a fan as far back as I can remember. Of his massive amount of quality work I have to say I love his work on Blackadder most.
He means rowing on a boat not rowing (same spelling) with words (meaning an argument).
one dislike is of Huge himself
I love Hugh, wish I had known what the damn clips were
I'm abt to watch this and im VERY scared cause everyone's saying the interviewer is mean and Hugh is like my idol so I rlly hope she isn't that bad.

She’s just taking the piss. You notice Hugh is totally comfortable with it. They are just being British together
I wish he could've done this whole interview as House.
As House himself would say, you're an idiot.
I hoped for this video would be uploaded. Thank you so much!!!
House was a funny show. It wasn't just House saying funny things sometimes. It was mainly drama but the writers were really witty
True, but I've always wondered if those witty lines would've been as funny without Hugh in the lead role. He has a gift for comedy drama.
@@markhorsburgh76 Calling it a gift would be an understatement
House was good but he was brilliant on Blackadder.
@@peterfenwick4662 he was good on Blackadder/ a bit of fry and Laurie but his acting truly shines on house

She is not a good interviewer 🙈
She acts as a therapist, and not in a good way. Pity, when he's got so much good to share
He is so right because we do live in a fractured society......the powers that be have orchestrated it that way.
Genius
House was in part a story about mental illness, addiction, and emotional pain. So it's funny that he talks about wanting to do that... I suppose the difference is that House always chooses life in the end.

My thoughts exactly, it's frustrating even to us as viewers, can't imagine how annoying it must be for him
C Webb, also to please stop touching his nose!
I can't stand this interviewer, it's such a shame because Hugh is really up there and a fascinating character to interview.
Man. It's a lot longer than it feels.
As the actor said to the bishop..
although it's like a shrink talk, but it is healing in some ways, really nice
No actor enjoys watching themselves. You never feel like you’re doing a good enough job
I really want to listen to this interview because I adore Hugh Laurie but the interviewer attacking him the entire time was distracting and it was pissing me off
I've noticed that the vast majority of people on this message board who dislike Mariella Frostrup are women. The reason is obvious.
Interviewer likes her own voice
That interviewer is the most annoying person ever!
Bertie!!....Berie Wooster!!
Tbh, Bertie was my first crush when I was 5.
@17:13 I am getting so tired of this kind of talk. Any sentence one utters apparently needs to go through a filter to see if someone could possibly get offended.

I wish she'd shut up cross-checking her head-canon with the facts and let the talent speak ;-;
Why are these things always rushed?
The interviewer wasn’t that bad. People watching this for Hugh will enjoy it.
Does he actually say "papist" at 3 minutes 9 seconds? I've never heard it used that way before.
She is lucky he is so polite. How is she so awful at this?
Ms Frostrup is just appalling in this. She is SO annoying! She asks a question then continues trying to “answer” for Hugh. She really cut him short! Rude.
I thought that it was me but now I can see that I'm not alone. What an annoying person!
I thought only Americans were irritating interviewers until seeing this. Makes one appreciate Graham Norton so much more!
Yes. House was the edge of satire.
this is very difficult to get through...it's like pulling teeth between these 2
i just wish she didn’t interrupt hin repeatedly
*him
in more than one occasion, she is trying to convince hugh with her opinion about his career, and when he disagrees, quite politely, she just keeps on insisting.... unbearable
She's awful. I wanted to hear what he had to say, not what she thought he should say.
Hugh made American movies before House.
Shame she turned out to be an ideologue but I did enjoy the interview, who can see Hugh Laurie now and not enjoy it?
It was different for me, I just wondered why the Prince regent sounded weird.
Does she kind of hate him?
44:41 no shit. Glad the interviewer is self-aware at least.
Should learn from Michael Parkinson; Never interrupt your interviewee when they’re making a point - because that IS the Point !
6:27 House is holding his sore leg... acting British must be causing him a great deal of pain... I'm 12 BTW
the interviewer is such a sadist I do not like her treatment of Mr. Laurie.
and he handled it so smartly, in awe of him to maintain a balance
"A problem with your microphone" == "We need to go off air so we can tell you not to say anything that we might get sued about concerning women and men liking different books."
Is she growing a moustache?
why is she fighting with him?!
Did he really say, “Papist” (with a wry chuckle). (3:15). For en educated person, that was uncalled for.
Tory Glen could you please explain what does it mean ?
