Companies are gearing up for lead-free hunting laws. I know Italy is close to banning lead for hunting. I just got some samples of some Gualandi slugs called "Gualbo Steel" that are very similar to the DDupkeks.
Yep I'm now convinced more than ever that "stopping power" does not exist in handgun calibers unless you get up to something like a full power .44 magnum or larger, which you likely won't be using for carry or home defense. You want stopping power, get a long gun. Handguns just poke holes.
Thanks for an informative video. I keep slugs in the cuff on the stock of my shotgun. The reason I have slugs is in the event an intruder manages to barricade himself in. A standard velocity slug (1,600 fps) will penetrate most barriers one might find on my place. Not to mention if I have emptied my shotgun of buckshot something unusual is happening. There is nothing like a 12ga 1 Oz slug to deal with 'unusual'. Plus, I live in a rural area along the migration route of black bears. All of the black bears I have encountered didn't pose a threat. However, you never know when one might encounter a bear that is sick (rabid) or injured. A slug will put him out of his misery quickly and humanely. For some people segmented slugs are the cats meow. I can think of many uses for a segmented slug. For me they don't do anything well enough to consider the purchase of segmented slugs.
Thank you for everything you do. You converted me to carrying Federal HSTs in my 9mm carry gun, and now that I'm looking into a shotgun purchase these tests are perfect timing for me!
This vid made me think, what if Lehigh did a Maximum Expansion 12g slug. Can you say holy crap? If its modeled somewhere between the 9mm and 45 long colt judge round they make it would expand to a surface area half the size of Rhode Island and still stay under the 18" mark.
ScottishPride032 they already make a solid copper 12 gauge segmented slug for rifled shotguns. Ballistic tests show that it's not that great. Lehigh defense makes gimick ammo.
These should come with a Merrie Maid coupon as you will need it to clean up home invader parts through most of your home, maybe also some counseling sessions if you have never seen a human evaporate before.
I wish I could hit the like button a thousand times, cause i've been foaming at the mouth for that Winchester test. Thank you! I have several boxes of them in my inventory and i'm gonna be getting many more.
Great video. Thank you for sharing. I really like those Hexolit shells. I don't think the six smaller fragments effect significant wounds as you mention but they certainly help in dumping a ton of energy on the target and that solid middle that keeps going will definitely reach some vitals. I have the hexolit32, dupo28 and the Rossa32. The dupo 28 is the same thing as the Hexolit32 (fragmenting) but only one ounce instead of 1-1/8oz. Rossa32 is also 1-1/8 oz and basically it is more akin to a standard hollow point in the sense that it flowers out but unlike the hexolit 32 and the dupo 28 (which fragment), the Rossa32 keeps the expanded petals on the main slug and tears through like a hollow point but at 12ga scale. All are very devastating, nasty rounds. Also note that the DDuplex are marketed as hunting rounds; there may still be some over penetration depending on the case. Good stuff STB! Thanks again for you informative and good-info-packed videos.
Louie H Pictures and video that I used to see of them in game generally showed most of the fragments in the lungs or liver of large hogs and bear. It is interesting to me that they only went this shallow here. I wonder what the numbers would be for the 3" magnum version.
Hexolit is a scaled up version of the G2 RIP bullet. Scaled up to a point where its not a joke but still less effective then conventional designs. Did you see wallop the Winchester put on that gel block it speaks for itself. My vote goes to Winchester
Great video as usual. That Winchester slug looks like the best way to maximize the anti-personnel effect of a slug. The DDuplex slug would certainly be devastating, but I can't help thinking that a regular Foster slug flattens out much wider than the DDuplex slug's base, whereas the fragments are only penetrating half as deep as we're looking for. I really wonder how much effect the fragments would have on a human vs the type of game the round was designed for.
Excellent video as usual. I'm glad I picked up some of the Winchesters. I have 12 pellet 0 buck in my home defense shotgun and the Winchester segmenting slugs in the side saddle.
Good job, saw a bunch of boxes of that Winchester segmented slug at the store the other day, may have to go back today and grab a box if they havent sold out yet.
Where did you purchase those Hexolit 32 slugs? I really enjoy your channel. What I would like to see... Lehigh Defense +P+ Penetrator or Underwood +P+ Penetrator 9mm.... Lehigh defense Or underwood +P+ defender 9mm....R.I.P G2...Hornady critical defense 9mm...Liberty Civil Defense 9mm all go though the F.B.I tests. Along with Lehigh defense controlled chaos .223.Hornady Critical Defense 55gr & 73gr.... Liberty civil defense .223. I don’t know what ammo the FBI uses in there AR but I’d like to know & see that Tested also.
Devastating all three but it comes down to cost for most of us and a slug round are about a dollar each where as that exotic round looks very expensive. Lead is nice and may be toxic which is good but not for the recipient. In my home I think I will stay with birds hot . Give the doctors a challenge of getting it all removed.
This is a very high value test to me. Hexolit is very interesting ammo, for those who live in Bruin country. Hexolit 32 is generally advertised for use against bruins and large hogs.
Hmm must be a new PDX1 12 gauge round. The PDX1 12 gauge rounds I have, have a slug and three 00buck on top of the slug. You would think they would rename it or call it gen 2, PDX2 or something.
I know this is an ancient post (still love it)... I am curious if there is some way to measure G force, its a big hole, but my 380, 22 wmr, 300 BLK, and 40 S&W went farther. I know not apples to oranges but being hit in the chest with a 12 gauge ... not to concerned about penetration depth. BUT ITS COOL TO LOOK AT... PLEASE POST MORE!
I have shot several boxes of the segmenting Winchester slugs and I think they would be a very effective ( To say the least ) long range defense round. It is very common for any soft lead rifled slug to break into three pieces, the difference is these are (Designed) to do so and I've not had one fail to do so yet in any soft medium. Winchester also loads the same slug into the Law Enforcement (Ranger) Line. Same 1,600 FPS velocity.
Great test. That segmented slug is one destructive projectile. It would be interesting to see a gel test after the slug has punched through a replicated interior wall or two. I doubt there would be much difference in performance...my guess would be a slight reduction in penetration, although if it got smushed in a way to prevent it from breaking up there could be more penetration. Regardless, the properties of the segmented slug are that it will be devastating to anything it hits, even after penetrating a barrier. These properties may be desirable if you prefer to have the ability to penetrate concealment within your home and still put down a threat. It may be that you must make a shot through a couch, a wall, or a door under certain situations and something like #4 buck may just not have adequate penetration to stop the threat. 00 likely would, but 00 also penetrates much more through gel than the winchester segmented slug, and you're sending a cloud of shot instead of one big slug. Each pellet in the shot cloud has much less momentum than a single big slug, so they'd deflect much more after hitting a barrier....in other words, you have less control over their final trajectory downrange after sending them out than you would with a slug. As long as you plan ahead, to figure out the most safe background to fire into, a slug can be a responsible home defense choice. Rather than picking something less effective, that may require many more trigger presses(and many more chances for someone in the background to be hit), picking the most effective round and controlling the direction you are firing may be safer. It may involve changing level to shoot up or down at the threat, or designating different "safe spots" to move to that allow you to fire in a "safe" direction against a threat. It's food for thought for sure.
Thanks x a million for this test. Either of these would be good for rural self defense, especially when mixed up with penetrator slugs that can pass soft body armor. Now I'm wondering if I can design a lead mold for the PDX slug. There are machinists who will do a one off mold..
Now that I think of it, I would really encourage you to consider a test with the Rossa32 as my guess is that it will penetrate less than the Hexolit32 because it will create a larger diameter ball of nastiness which will stay together and therefore maybe penetrate less but it may liquify the front end of the block.
Louie H Rossa has a smaller expansion diameter than Hexolit (1.05 inches for Rossa, 1.4 inches for Hexolit). And it penetrates deeper than Hexolit 32 as retains more weight even if it fragments.
This was only one test. Maybe the petal penetration was on the low end on this one? They sell a 3" magnum version with more velocity which would likely push the fragments an extra inch or two in tissue. A killer round and one that keeps you legal if in an area that bans lead.
Is it just me, or did the Hexolit slug test remind anyone else of the G2 R.I.P. rounds, writ colossal (and minus the suck)? Seriously though, great video. I would have liked to have seen a bare gel test, as well, just to compare best vs worst case penetration, but this test certainly shows the rounds work as claimed.
Two or three ppl coming in ur house armed and u had two magz beside u.n one mag u have the hexloit 32 and the other mag u have pdx1ss what mag u grabin first and y
with the PDX1 segmenting slug, ive heard that it goes through hard barriers like a normal slug but does anyone know if it will still expand like it did in the gel if it passed through a hard barrier first? Or will the hard barrier prevent it from doing what it's designed to do?
I just received two boxes of this ammo ( Winchester Defender Segmenting Slug ) and I noticed that every single slug rattles inside the shell ... Anyone else have this happen? And are they safe to fire?
Yeah the hexolit fragments are the least of your worries if you still have a 296 grain projectile still penetrating. I'm gonna see if i can find some and use it on a deer this season. A good shot and it shouldnt be going far.
General Crazy Horse Not likely. I don't have any Makarov firearms, and I already have enough tests lined up in 9mm, .45 ACP, 12-gauge, .223, and .38 Special that it'll keep me busy for probably a couple of years...
ShootingTheBull410 Do you have any other rifles such as a .30-06, .243, .30-30, etc? It would be awesome to see what hunting rifle rounds would do. I know your channel is primarily focused on self defense rounds, but the .30-30 back in the good ole days was the rifle of choice for that purpose. Would be interesting to see what it would do.
I keep the ol winnie 1300 defender 7 plus one staggered between the pdx seg 1600 fps and a medley of other rounds that will no doubt leave nothing to be desired in the way of being on the recieving end of.. I've never tested them. I'd rather just have em all when it counts.
I speak from experience the Hexolite is better than Winchester PDX1 slugs. Plus it is a universal round that shoots very accurate from a rifled or smooth bore 12ga.. The Hexolite drop deer like a Mack truck. I use these in my smooth bore. My rifles bore Rossi I use Hornady 300gr SST slugs and have dropped deer dead in their tracks at 238yrds. This year I'm going for 300 yrds. For people who want to know. The deer at 238yrds was looking right at me. I shot it dead center of the front middle of the chest. It's heart, lungs, and liver were destroyed, and I pulled the slug copper jacket out of it's rear hindquarter, so yes the Hornady SST has plenty of penetration at that distance.
georgia bowhunter The similarity between the G2 RIP and the Hexolit 32 is like the difference between a toddler and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Sure, both are humans (both are bullets), both have a head and two arms and two legs (both have a solid base and some fragmenting shards), but -- that's where the similarity ends. If I had to get in a fight with either of them, I know which one I'd rather go up against. The DDupleks Hexolit 32 has been out for years, at least 4 and a half years, maybe much longer, but I don't know exactly when it came out. It's entirely possible that G2 saw it and tried to make a handgun version of it. But there's such an incredible gulf of performance difference between the two -- the size, weight, damage done and penetration depth of the shards (35 grains vs. 6 grains each), and the base of the slug (gigantic 300-grain monstrosity vs. tiny 46-grain chunk that's literally half the size of a .380 ACP) -- really, they shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence.
ShootingTheBull410 Well, I didn't mean similarity in effect (there's no way a .380 load could ever equate to a 12 ga load). But as far as the controlled fragmentation and radial dispersion of the small fragments, they are a bit similar. It's funny that even in a 12 ga, the small segments couldn't make it to 12 inches. Do you know what the material of the hexolit is? Is it some type of steel alloy?
***** Agreed, I think they saw the Hexolit and tried to duplicate what it does, in a handgun round. To me it's like how the Liberty tries to replicate how a rifle works, but in a handgun round -- there's just a massive gulf in the actual performance... The Hexolits use steel, but I don't know what exact alloy. Their site (ddupleks.com) has various articles on what they've done with steel. I really wish that the fragments had gone at least 10", that would have been tremendous. At 6" - 7.5", they're potentially capable of creating lethal wounds on their own (they're certainly big enough), but you would be unwise to rely on them doing that. It'd be a better bet if they'd gone 8" consistently. At 10", it'd be a no brainer. The giant slug penetrating 16" and the frags going 10" each, that'd be the self-defense ammo of the century. As it is, I think it's still incredible, but I just do with the frags had been engineered to go just a little further...
Although not suitable for home defense. I always carry a few DDupleks Monolit32s or Federal Deep Penetrators when I'm hunting with my shotgun. I haven't had to use them yet but I run into quite a few bears in North Georgia. The whole DDupleks line up is very interesting and very effective at their designated purpose.
I have some the pdx1 12 ga & mine also have 3 00 buck on top of the slug which makes 6 wound chanels the buck at 30 foot hit one in each shoulder & one round chroch area I shot them out my tri star raptor a tac turkey semi nice patern all 5 shots & quick
I was going to subscribe but I didn't find 1 video for 357 mag. That's un American lol. Just kidding but it was strange ya didn't have 1 video of the 357 mag. And to many videos about the 9mm.
First, thanks for the great video. But I have to say, that I´m not too impressed with both of these. I mean yea, of course they are plenty powerfull for home defense, but the Brenneke Short Magnum you tested earlier is just a far, far better performing round at all. These, especially the Hexolit, are somewhat similar to the G2 RIP. The performance isn´t too bad and they all do what they are supposed to, but the classic round is just ... better.
Sorry but I'm not really that impressed by those slugs. I mean, the PDX 1 is clearly more expensive then regular foster sluggers and I can provide you many tests where you can see the exact exact results. Few examples : m.th-cam.com/video/7HuVkXLreWE/w-d-xo.html m.th-cam.com/video/Y5P5wI9vdNQ/w-d-xo.html As you can see, a regular 100% lead slugger will not over-penetrate and will fragment very early as it enters the tissue. So I don't really see where the extra money is going with the PDX 1.
Ummmm...WOW! Talk about something a home invader in the country WOULD NOT want to deal with! I don't trust any slug in a home scenario with other buildings within range. But...DAMN...that's a bad day right there! Thank you.
Dang. So much hurt in one shot. The shotgun never ceases to amaze with its effectiveness.
Companies are gearing up for lead-free hunting laws. I know Italy is close to banning lead for hunting. I just got some samples of some Gualandi slugs called "Gualbo Steel" that are very similar to the DDupkeks.
Wish he still made videos he does it right with denim and real gelatin big thanks to this guy his videos are excellent
Excellent test.
Those sure make handgun rounds look like a bb. Love the slowmo.
Yep I'm now convinced more than ever that "stopping power" does not exist in handgun calibers unless you get up to something like a full power .44 magnum or larger, which you likely won't be using for carry or home defense. You want stopping power, get a long gun. Handguns just poke holes.

Pdx1 it is! Brutal test

ScottishPride032 That could be possibly phenomenal. I don't think they currently make any shotgun ammo, but I'd love to see it.
ScottishPride032 they already make a solid copper 12 gauge segmented slug for rifled shotguns. Ballistic tests show that it's not that great. Lehigh defense makes gimick ammo.
ScottishPride032 I was thinking the same thing, or even a 12ga. Controlled Chaos round. Now that would be sick.
These should come with a Merrie Maid coupon as you will need it to clean up home invader parts through most of your home, maybe also some counseling sessions if you have never seen a human evaporate before.
That segmented slug was absolutely brutal.
I wish I could hit the like button a thousand times, cause i've been foaming at the mouth for that Winchester test. Thank you! I have several boxes of them in my inventory and i'm gonna be getting many more.
Great video. Thank you for sharing. I really like those Hexolit shells. Good job, saw a bunch of boxes of that Winchester segmented slug at the store the other day, may have to go back today and grab a box if they havent sold out yet.
Awesome job on this test. Slugs are always fun to watch

ScottishPride032 I like the way your mind works.

Could you create a playlist for your shotgun shell videos please? Love your channel.
DDupleks Thanks for clearing that up. Now we know. Great work with those shells! All of them are awesome.
DDupleks AP20 is your catch-all round. I love them.
thanks man your video answer all my questions
Are the Winchester segmented slugs effective for deer hunting?
Winchester also offers the same load in a ranger box. It's really affordable at around $1 per round.
Truly enjoyed your videos, well done!
Thanks
The breneke has to be my fav. No shop here has em though so im outta luck
Outstanding!! Thank you for your excellent videos! Plenty of info for choosing my ammo...
Awesome vid, as usual.
I wouldn't dare load those things for self defense. I don't want to go to jail.
This was only one test. Maybe the petal penetration was on the low end on this one? They sell a 3" magnum version with more velocity which would likely push the fragments an extra inch or two in tissue. A killer round and one that keeps you legal if in an area that bans lead.

One of these to the pelvis and the attacker would no longer be able to stand on his or her feet. It looks like a fight stopper!
Aye, where you been?
Yes!! Shotgun testing
Maybe a wax slug test in the future?
The Hexolit seems like a super-sized RIP G2
Yes it does. The difference is this came out first and the concept makes sense in a 12 gauge.
georgia bowhunter The similarity between the G2 RIP and the Hexolit 32 is like the difference between a toddler and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
Okay that was really cool!
The performance isn´t too bad and they all do what they are supposed to, but the classic round is just ... better.
I want a slug that has the most dramatic results when shooting water jugs. I want them to blow up big!
Excellent
more 12 GA!!!
Sick
WOW!!!
Where are all the 9mm videos 😁
"segmented shotgun slug showdown" yeah try saying that 5 times fast.
These come in 10g
Sorry but I'm not really that impressed by those slugs. I mean, the PDX 1 is clearly more expensive then regular foster sluggers and I can provide you many tests where you can see the exact exact results.
Few examples :

m.th-cam.com/video/Y5P5wI9vdNQ/w-d-xo.html
As you can see, a regular 100% lead slugger will not over-penetrate and will fragment very early as it enters the tissue.
So I don't really see where the extra money is going with the PDX 1.
Cool vid yet aggro cringe ease up ”slugger”
TY for the video!
harbor freight has some sawhorses on sale... $9.99 but I have got them for $6.99!
Ummmm...WOW! Talk about something a home invader in the country WOULD NOT want to deal with! I don't trust any slug in a home scenario with other buildings within range. But...DAMN...that's a bad day right there! Thank you.
