  • In this video I am chasing the moods on assignment for the regions of Denmark. Behind the scenes about how I'm planning my trips and how I deal with wet and cold equipment. Open full description for more information.

    Location: Denmark
    Date: January 2021
    Day: -1°C (30.2°F)
    Night: -3°C (26,6°F)
    ------------------------------------
To be able to deliver the last "mood" to the project I am currently working on, I had to capture winter. Therefore I was happy to see how the temperatures in Denmark suddenly dropped and snow was moving closer. I decided to go to a location in the Northern part of Denmark together with Simon who is also working with me on this project. Being two photographers helped with covering more angles.
Deadline for this job is August 2021 and I am looking forward to share the final result.

    A few questions:
    1. Does the snow damage the equipment?
Most of my equipment is weather sealed which is not the same as waterproof. That means the snow itself is not going to harm the equipment as long as it stays frozen. The problem occurs when it thaws. Then i have to dry it all so that it will not damage the equipment when it once again freezes the day after. I am not afraid to get wet equipment in general, but water in combination with frost is a bad combination.
The microphones are not very tolerant to water, so they really need to be kept dry. That is also why I carefully brushes the snow off before putting them back into the photo backpack.
    2. Are you switching to Canon?
Because of some future assignments and an Arctic expedition I am looking for alternatives to my Z cameras which did not perform very well on my 2 months expedition to Ellesmere Island when it comes to the autofocus.
I find the autofocus system in the Canon R5 and R6 more capable and faster to use and for the assignment i am currently working on, the video features are needed.
I do not know what the future will bring. For now I am just enjoying working with the system.

Another tip concerning silica gel: Always put the silica gel and whatever you're drying into an airproof container like a plastic bag. The silica gel will work faster as it only needs to dry a smaller volume of air.

I guess you had no overheating issues with the R5 in that condition. ;-)
Your video brought back some memories about my first vaction in Denmark 1994! We rentet a small house at the Limfjord and drove around that area and visited a lot of very nice spots there. We also had been to the area of that forrest and the heather.
Winter is a beautiful time for landscape photography with this strong contrasts of the white snow and the dark trees.
And if you follow the tips you gave us all at the end of this video you don't have to worry about your equipment.
Just for the photography in that weather conditions you had, you need good weather sealed equipment.

Morten, when someone hires you to shoot video footage for them, they are REALLY getting their money's worth! I love how you get different angles, drone shots, woodland footage, open country footage, afternoon, twilight, etc. So much variety will give the film makers a lot to work with and many creative options.

Thank you a lot for the tips. I have been photographing wildlife for 5 days in Poland Katowice and we have a lot of snow here. Also the temperatures are below 0 degrees Celsius and I was always worried about my equipment. Now I know what to do! At this time outside my window we have snowstorm and It has been swnowing for about 5 hours. Maybe this front will come to Denmark so be careful and standby. Of course the footage is incredibly beautiful and the project that you are working on is amazing. Greetings and everything the best!

I once foolishly changed lenses during a snow shower - a single snowflake got into the camera body and landed on the edge of the mirror. It melted almost instantly and some of the moisture got behind the layers of the mirror. Camera worked fine after that, but the mirror had a stain across one side from that point on. I got so used to that stain, I missed it for a few weeks when I upgraded to a newer camera.

Been there and done that in my younger years both hunting and photographing and camping. Your tips for taking care of equipment were right on. One other thing I might mention: I learned to be very careful not to bring the lens of my scope sight close to my mouth when I was bringing the gun up for a shot or there would be an instantly fogged lens that would not evaporate in the cold.

Hope to see you up here one day, Morten and your friend. Great video once again!
Also been out taking pictures of the city i live in with the most snow since like 2006 or so. Just trying to capture the mood with using cranes to throw snow off the houses and people cross country skiing in the city-park. But there is so much and sometimes heavy snow that they actually warned people from walking in the forest or underneath trees...
But tomorrow morning i want to get out capturing some birds in the snow, i guess that makes a great contrast.
