Bluefin Tuna Fishing: Trolling MadMacs in San Diego

  • We went fishing for bluefin tuna for the first time this season. I was finally able to try out the trolling method using the Nomand MadMac lures and we were very successful! We hooked 5 bluefin tuna on the troll, but only managed to put the gaff in three of them. We also found a kelp paddy which was holding a school of hungry yellowtail! I suffered a few breakoffs, but Mike was able to put two beautiful California Yellowtail on the boat to round out a bag of bluefin. Just another day fishing in paradise!

    Never in my life have i seen anyone keep the motor running at the same trolling speed long after you have hooked up. You might have caught both fish if you would have put the engine in neutral. Are you trying to post a video of what not to do?

    • @glenngray1201
      @glenngray1201 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cabo , this technique works well to land larger tuna but needs to slow down the speed you just want the forward momentum to be enough to keep his head coming
      To the boat , I’m sure they will figure it out soon enough..

    Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could th-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

    Sorry for the question, why put the boat in gear while reeling in the fish?

    • @SDKook
      @SDKook  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A couple of reasons from what I understand (not an expert) 1. The jigs are very heavy so if you get slack in the line a lot of times the can fall right out... Especially if you've been fighting a while. 2. The fish tend to swim with the boat a bit more so you can get them close to up and down then finish the fight with the boat out of gear. You see a lot of big pelagic trolling videos that use this method. Especially for wahoo.

    • @SDKook
      @SDKook  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It keeps their head pointed towards the boat after the initial run. Then you slowly crank them in! I was going to fast but just idling is plenty. Also these jigs are huge so it doesn't allow the line to slack up and fall out.

  • @ultimatejay
    @ultimatejay ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don’t understand why people fight fish with boat in gear running- all they does is make it 10x harder to reel the fish in. Do you see any pro commercial bluefin fisherman do it? No, they actually back up on the fish.

    • @SDKook
      @SDKook  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My first time trying this method m it is weird, but it's very common with high speed trolling for wahoo and other pelagics. The jigs are heavy and apparently have a tendency to fall out of slack is in the line. Also the fish swim with the boat and you slowly crank em in until they get up and down.

    • @mike_Craig4500
      @mike_Craig4500 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BFT are notorious for swimming at the boat which causes slack line and spit hooks- keeping the boat in gear counters it.

    • @glenngray1201
      @glenngray1201 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why they do that and to understand why’s it’s done is because your using the boat to stir the fish to you keeping his head coming to the boat and not allowing the tuna to get slack and into circling on its side .
      You drive the boat down swell slow ahead in and out of gear and getting the fish along side the boat than gaffing said fish just makes it easier . On bigger tuna this works well unless you just want to fight it up and down possibly break off and your arms being sore for days … I fish smarter not harder ..
