My favorite TH-cam channel strikes again. I just bought a penn carnage iii boat rod 6ft and pre order the new penn fathom ii ld 40n 2 speed on tackle direct. Take a look at the new fathoms I like the way they look.
Wow, Ty Capt. Chris! Like your entire channel, this was over the top. Great tips and detailed explanation of your whole process. As always, many thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience ! Tight lines.
just received my carnage 3 spinning rod to go with a saragossa 25000 i just got too, also received my OTI blade spinning rod yesterday to go with a new saragossa 20000 i had gotten, still waiting on my shimano terez to arrive for another saragosa 25000 i picked up too, now to get some braid on all of them, obviously some cabin fever has set in with my spending spree for next year, thanks for the tips on the gear@@reaperfishingnj8623
Another great vid! Question, how much top shot do you use for the chunking set up on the 40 nld2? Also, love to see a separate vid on how you tie the double Albright. Thanks!
Bluefins anything. It’s all about drag. You are either following the fish or make them come to you. Heavy drag and line, manhandled a 200 pound shark the other day. 130 okuma class tackle
i used to use them years ago. fished with a really good fisherman out of Pt Pleasant. we kept pulling hooks with them. he introduced me to the gamakatsu that night. Never looked back.
Hey Chris Looking good! It looks like you lost a few lbs. No more work for me, retired Oct 3. I'd be fishing today if it wasn't for a slight case of Covid. My buddies should be killing the stripers today. Thanks for the entertainment while I recoup.
Great video man love the info thanks a ton! I’m up a little north from you in RI getting into offshore tuna. For chunking, hesitating between getting a few Penn 16VSX setups or the Penn fathom 40nld2 setups. Which one do you recommend for chunking? Also, What do you run for trolling reels? We run Penn 50w.
I would get two of each if you can afford it. But can't beat the 40 NLD2 for the money. Great bang for the buck. not a single hiccup on them over all these seasons of beating them up!! We run Penn 50's and Shimano TLD 50s in the canyons. If I know it's mostly small YF I'll add in some Penn 30s. We have zero 80s or 130s.
Captain Chris, I have a serious question from a relatively new angler. I felt the speedmaster in person and fell in love but my question is. Why would you put 80lb braid on it then a 60 lb topshot? Wouldn't 65lb braid make more sense you would be able to get more line capacity at a similar pound rating. Because would the 60 lb mone snap before the braid anyway? Also, why get a 100lb rod when you only have 80lb braid? Thanks for the help Chris.
I have used 65 before and i actually like the 80 a bit better. It's easier to handle. With braid we get plenty of line capacity. Typically you'll break off the leader and neither the topshot or mainline braid.
Why uni to swivel and not Palomar? I'm assuming because it's easier to pull tight or because you can't tie Palomar to the leader end of swivel if it's already tied on?
You are assuming correct. It's way easier to tie the palomar to the hook. kinda annoying on the barrel swivel. in the heat of it all the clinch is so much easier to tie to the barrel in my opinion
Yea I think you may be under gunned just a bit. That is mostly for fish in the 40-80 pound range or so. That being said I think with the right angler and captain you most certainly can catch a 100 lb BF or YF on that reel no worries
Well, after finding one of your videos and then the channel, I’m blaming you personally for me now shopping for a boat. No, correct that, possibly TWO boats. Lol. I thought surf fishing with Van Staals and custom rods was expensive. Nope. I’m sure the twin diesel 35 Bertram beats surf fishing. So, thanks 🫤🫤 🤙🏻
It would get way way too expensive and overkill. If you're using a 50 for just chunking only then I would spool it with just 50 or 60 pound mono. For trolling almost all of us use hollowcore braid backing and then an 80-130 pound mono "topshot". This increases our line capacity by A TON!!!
you most certainly can when the bite is off the charts and they are not line shy. For the most part though you really need the stealth of the fluoro leader
Too close to the swivel and bait. I feel as though it hampers the action of a live bait or increases likelihood of bait spinning. That being said.....yes I have used them and they will work
I have some Talica 25’s with a 100lb mono top shot that I am using for trolling and chunking. Whats the best way to attach a lighter leader to the 100lb mono and what connections would you use ?
For anyone who has tried to get set up for tuna fishing, you know this video is pure gold
thank you so much for the kind words!
I love that you share it all. No secrets. Very informative, Thank you
Thanks so much for watching!
Great video! Would love to hear you talk about how you are choosing where to chunk midshore during summer when you cant see temp breaks etc.
Great suggestion!

Great vid! Learned a lot just in time for nymph last tuna trip of the season!
my not nymph…..lol
Glad to help out!
Man, I love your channel a lot. I like the way you explain things not just in this video but in all others. Great information. Tight lines bro!!
I appreciate that!
Another great one. Definitely need a few hats.
Thanks so much!
Thanks brother all my questions were answered with this video appreciate it
You're welcome! Thanks so much for watching!
If you like jigging slow pitch is definitely where it’s at especially if you’re going offshore. You can literally catch anything on slow pitch jigs.
Slow pitch is great but these fish in the 60-80 pound class on slow pitch gear are a pain in the ass and u will break off a shit ton
@@marcopugliese5946nah man not if you know what you’re doing. 60- 80 pounds is nothing. It’s probably the Funnest way to catch them too
Great video. Id love to see a tutorial for setting and retrieving your anchor for chunking!
Hmm. Inshore it's pretty easy with my windlass. Out in the canyons I've only done it a few times.

@@reaperfishingnj8623 on the carnage combo with the fathom40nld2, would you feel comfortable trolling with that setup for the same class fish?
Negative
Capt Chris great video! Thanks for all info. put me down for the Reaper Hats!
Thanks so much James. Will do
i'm in rhode island, out of point judith,w/24'cc trying to find a few more yellowfin ,before they go to far out for me ,
Good luck Tony!

You're very welcome!
Could you possibly do a video on how you set your drags when chunking, does it differ when having a lighter top shot then your braid?
Can you show the knot you use to connect the topshot to the braid?
Will do

Check out the Owner super mutu hooks. You wont go back to the regular owner circle hooks. Especially good on the larger bfts.

Thank you Capt! Great video and love the hat!

Hello Reaper team!!
My man!!
What day do you plan on heading up the Hudson? I’ll swing passed you with my Reaper shirt on trolling either Raritan channel or the Narrows.
We went yesterdfay!
Thanks for the run down bro!! Great video!!
Any time!
Excellent video great info Chris thanks !
Glad you enjoyed it
Captain Dennis 👍
what a fishy guy!
Great video. Thank you. Is that shimano xh or xxh?
XXH
Just what I needed, thanks.
Glad I could help!
Do you use anything to stop the float from going over the power swivel?
negative. it'll usually stop at the swivel. if it slides over it's typically not a problem
Very informative. Thank you

What rods would you recommend pairing with the Penn 16 VSX reels?
Thx again !
What are your thoughts on the avet hx (or Hxw) 5/2 (2 speed) for this application?
Those reels would absolutely work for this!
Pin rampage Jigging rod Good for tuna fishing
Which SPRO Swivels for the #130 lbs. and the #230 lbs.)
POWER SWIVEL or the POWER BALL BEARING SWIVEL WITH 2 WELDED RINGS
Star tackle makes some fucking awesome rods. I have a Star 5’6” jig rod. Things fucking awesome.
Are these hooks black or chrome? Great video. Thanks
black

hang tight. Zac just built a custom rod for popping. I am the last person to ask right now. But we'll see how we do with this setup. I'll report back
Niceeee!!!
Thank you! Cheers!

And would u ever crimp to the hook and or use chafing material
I tie under 100 lb and have never felt the use for chafe gear. In addition the chafe gear isn't as stealthy of an approach
How long of a top shot are you putting on?
Bout 150-200 ft
Between the Shimano trevala and the Penn carnage rod which did you like better? Looking at getting one to pair up with the torque 40
I actually like the Carnage better but they don't make them anymore. Waiting on the new ones. But the Trevala is pretty bad ass too
looking into getting a spinning combo isnt the 10k a little small for 100lb tuna?

How much line do you use for topshot?
50 yards typically

On the penn 40n 2, what lb class line is on them?
check out the 9:55 mark on this video
50 yards or 50 feet of top shot?
yards
How do you get into this industry?
I only do it as a hobby
Can anyone tell me can I use straight 50 fluorocarbon on a penn 50 ?

You can kill any fish on a 50 wide.
They hold a lot of braid
darn right!
Stand up drag people can’t take.
Awesome video. Do you know what blanks the 2 customs were built on?
not sure. Zac built em
I have some Talica 25’s with a 100lb mono top shot that I am using for trolling and chunking. Whats the best way to attach a lighter leader to the 100lb mono and what connections would you use ?
I would probably just tie direct to a slightly larger barrel swivel then same leader length and connections going to hook
Makes sense, thanks !
