  • Today I unbox my dream Cartier-a watch I recently scored for an absolute bargain-and take a look at the brand's fascinating cultural impact, history, industry achievements, and how they created the world's first truly iconic luxury watch over 100 years ago.
    With luxury watches from brands like Rolex, Patek, Audemars Piguet, and other brands becoming so expensive and overhyped with queues just to buy them, and some even in short supply, there are better options out there. In this video I share 6 reasons why the Cartier Santos holds its own against other in-demand watches, along with the best places to buy, and sweet spots in the used market. Is this the best value luxury watch in 2022?

    I’m noticing a lot of collectors getting into brands like Cartier. To me it shows that collectors have had enough of Rolex and are looking elsewhere for their luxury purchases, after all watch collecting is not all about Rolex hype.

      @j.l.7264 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oscarosullivan4513 this is such a random statement though, aside from panerai, which Swiss brand isn’t finished to the same degree? They all are. The people who takes any chance to make the same old complaint about Rolex availability are beating a dead horse. If you want one then get on the list and wait, if you don’t then don’t bother. It’s that simple. You never waste money on getting a substitute, because you will never get what you wanted at the start. The watch market is in a bubble right now and I think everyone will soon realize why Rolex had such a good value retention history while other brands don’t.

      Rolex still holds a significant place in the world of watches. But Rolex is no longer "the" watch brand. Who wants to be on a waiting list for 2+ years for a Rolex, when you can go and buy a watch from brands such as Cartier or Omega, and not have to be on a waiting list for them.

    • @rafaeloliva6425
      @rafaeloliva6425 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Perhaps some folks are put off due to low Rolex model availability. However, people will jump at the opportunity to buy one, given the chance. I own more than one rolex and are staples in my watch collection. People, dislike the difficulty acquiring Rolexes more popular models. Yet, once they posses one they appreciate why they are so very sought after.
      The Cartier Santos large, especially with the classic white dial is an amazing and versatile watch! With the black alligator strap I've rocked both suits and tuxes with no problem. On the steel braclet, it is casual yet classy, wearing a lien shirt and slacks.
      It truly a niche watch who's versatility is truly hard to match at any price point.

      I was thinking, being unable to see the automatic/mechanical movement of a watch which has a solid case back, it really doesn't make a big difference as to whether it's a quartz or mechanical movement (other than occasionally having to replace a battery, at which time only a jeweler sees it - or you see it if you replace your own batteries).

I recall so vividly looking at the expensive sportswear worn by fellow Italian friends of my father and thinking they were the coolest people I had ever met. The music, the cinema, the exciting new tech like brick phones and early Casio, I distinctly remember feeling an excitement for the future, like anything was possible. Loved the whole episode.. your background history really is excellent and brings the watch alive. I bought my Santos in 1998 in Paris at the Cartier boutique on Place Vendome. It was my first entry into a special watch and as such is dear to my heart. It's the unisex size, auto, 2 tone, gold roman numerals, blue cabochon on the crown, blue second hand and the wonderful Guillaume dial. All the true classic elements. I don't wear it that often as it is a small watch and the date is minuscule. But your enthusiasm has given me the desire to wear it more...looking forward to your review of it. Congratulations..

    ""The distinctive square bezel and oval shape was inspired by the "New Machine Age" of the time, as well as various clocks that Cartier had previously produced...A blue sapphire cobouchon was placed in the crown - a gemstone chosen because in the medieval and ancient world it signified celestial faith and hope. They are also believed to have properties of protection and good fortune, perfect for somebody in the early days of flight.""
    You said it! And it's very true, and there's so much more!

    Awesome 👍 it's not your ordinary or expected version of the Santos. Makes it stand out. Quartz is totally fine for such a watch. Always believed with Cartier Tank and Santos, without a running seconds in many examples, who cares if it's quartz. You'd never know or miss the fact it's not mechanical, hand wound or automatic. Always ready and accurate. Especially since you have a moon phase complication, never have to be concerned with figuring out what phase the moon is if the watch had powered down (if it were a mechanical) and taking extra time resetting that as well. Set and forget for the most part. Enjoy the outliers within the classics.
    Great choice, man!

    I think maybe Bud Fox got a Panthere when he upgraded? I could be mistaken. Didn’t think it was a Santos.
    Question about your Santos…
    … specifically about your experience with power reserve. I know the Santos only has a 42hr power reserve… that’s not my complaint or question. My question is about getting to that power reserve (or even half of it)…
    How often did you wear it, for how many hours a day, and how much did you feel you had to wind it to “top it off” each day, if at all?
    Manual winding to top it off is a feature the watch has, but it seems inefficient to me. 50 winds gets me ~ 8 hours. 160 winds gets me ~ 42 hours. That seems like a lot. Those values are with no wearing, just winding it and setting it down.
    With 50 winds + 8 hours of wearing (some desk sitting, plenty of walking) didn’t get it to my 7AM wake-up the next day. Did you experience anything like this or is there something wrong with mine?
    Thanks! Great videos.
    Edit: Whoops, I see you got the quartz. I guess I’ll have to go elsewhere for my power reserve answers. 🤣🤣

I’ve been watching your channel since I was deployed in Afghanistan back in 2017 and it’s been nothing but amazing content. I remember you talking about the Orient Bambino so that was the first Automatic watch I bought back then. Wish the absolute best for you!

    Speaking of Charlie Sheen and watches. In Two and a Half Men Charlie wears the same platinum Rolex Yacht-Master for all seasons, which I think is a nice little detail to show off his wealth (in a relatively modest way), having that said, his broke-ass looser brother Alan end up with no less than 3 Rolex watches; a black Submariner, a Day-Date with frosted bezel and one unknown model. You should think he could flip those watches for money, but it never happens. Also, after Charlie's death its revealed that he bought a $60k Cartier which he kept in a bank box. I also believe he bought a Cartier to his mother at some point, who responded with "thank you, now I don't have to wear my good watch every day"...

    At 4:30 you said that Patek create the first lady's wristwatch in 1868, but it's the first swiss wristwatch. The first lady's wristwatch was invented by Breguet with the Reine de Naples in 1810. Congrats from France.

    That is just me, but for me Cartier is more a brand for women. Rappers it's all about bling bling things, right ?
    What is funny, Cartier has more quartz models for women as for men. Women don't care about automatic watches :D
    Congratulations TGV!

    The rectangular Cartiers and the Patek Calatrava are the only watches on which I like Roman numerals. My Cartier of choice would be the Tank MC with the small seconds dial on six o’clock! Congrats on your new acquisition!

    Cartier Santos, with its case with clearly visible screw heads (is it a correct name?), looks perfectly steampunk, just like Royal Oak.
    (Not my personal style - and also I can't really afford these watches - I love ultra-futuristic stuff ;) )

    Excellent Vid. Love the cream colour and the smallish Date indicator hand. And the fact that it has no seconds hand. I loathe center mounted seconds hands on square watches. YUCK! To me they just look wrong like a bad taste mish mash of vintage and modern. Square watches suite small sub-dials for seconds hands - way more classic. Therefore I do like the Santos Chronograph , and Cartier rectangular tanks that feature the sub seconds, and really love the Roger Dubuis Golden Square with Roman Numerals and small sub seconds though they are way more expensive than the Cartiers.

    Not a real two-tone fan, but that's a great piece. Moonphase is tasty. Quartz is so nice to grab and go, especially for a complication like moonphase. My next piece might be a tank solo. I want to be like Ali and Miles Davis. ;)

    Good buy and good work! Quartz - why not? I have a Cartier Panthere quartz. After an effortless 20 years it has never been serviced. When I do open the Box to call upon it's formidable and immaculate presence it is still there - dutifully ticking away.
    It has required a few batteries in that time. It is worth pointing out that the current crop of battery driven Cartier wrist watches will now power the watch for 7 years. (Tell that to the Wife or partner; and save a few thousand toward your next automatic !)

      Lol me too. However there are a number of fun and quite affordable Seikos from this era that took design cues from Cartier and have a very distinct "80's" vibe to them. Square watches were commonplace in business environments at that time. Even though I'm a bit older than TGV I identify with the 80s more than any other decade!
