    The part noone talks about tho: Making a mistake halfway through the song and having to press all the record buttons again and again.

      It's rare/easy to avoid if you're not a perfectionist about any one take. But you can also keep the cameras rolling and just restart the track in garage band or whatever DAW you're using, and trust final cut to sync it.

    • @ricklang_drummer
      @ricklang_drummer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. I guess there is a solution to that too however, if you use multicam and record several takes. If you make a mistake in bar 44 in take 1 say, but that bar was ok in take 2, you could probably stitch those takes together in a good spot in the audio file, but that needs to be accompanied by another video angle from that same take. Else I have the same issue as you. Usually end up with 10 takes and pick the best one.

      I just get a large memory and keep on going then just trim it when im satisfied.. but then if youre good at improvising and you forgot the part you can just make your own part and get away with it..

    This is great, thanks! I started doing this recently, rig:
    - EAD10
    - On my Mac: GarageBand, Moises AI for a drumless track (on my Mac)
    - iPad for video.
    Process: I'd start the video recording on the iPad, sit down, start the drumless audio backing + record my drums on the mac (into GarageBand with two tracks: drumless audio, and my drumming). Where I was tearing my hair out was that I'd bring the native iPad video into iMovie (which is longer than the audio because I started it first), and bring the exported audio mix (drums + music) from GarageBand into iMovie...but syncing them was a total nightmare in iMovie. I just couldn't, it wouldn't let me fine tune syncing (even with snapping off), and couldn't sync it. Sounds like my solution for this, so I can continue using two devices (iPad for video, Mac for audio > full mixdown) is to switch to FinalCut pro. Sound right? Also wondering about CapCut, looks easier to use and has fine tuning capabilities for syncing tracks and editing.

      Update: Simple fix, I now use CapCut which is amazing, has some nice power, and features + templates. And for the problem I was having, it's fantastic because CapCut allows you to zoom in on the track timeline and move everything in place just to where you want it. I synced my audio and video track in less than 5min

    Dear 80/20 drummer. I'm a 70 YO, resurrected Non Gig player (play for pleasure in retirement to My Music). recentky i went to function with a small live band. The drummer was pretty dynamic - close knit band at a bar / grill. I couldn't get over how great he sounded. Lush & Loud Cymbal crashes . using a Tama Kit. I understand the drums were Miked up , but i didn't see any mics on or near the cymbals. Am i missing something as to the outstanding sound of the Cymbals - I think they were Zildians. I never did any recording, and don't have any recording abilities or know-how other than using a mic on cassette recorder or my phone. I will study this video i have a lot to learn if only for general interest. Who knows, maybe a Geriatric band nearby me could materialize for extra fun!! Nothing like Live music.

      You want to hit the cymbals with a glancing blow rather than straight on. Not only does it keep the volume down but it makes it sound way better. A nice, loud kick drum hit with the cymbal helps too. For some reason the two together with a proper blend make each other sound better.

    Flip the camera on a phone/iThing/etc to the selfie cam, put the thing in the place where you can a.) hear your drums the best, and b.) they sound fairly crappy. There's a reason for this -- when I record like that and I'm off/make a mistake/etc it really stands out. I know that I can't "hide" behind the mic or editing or anything else. It also means there's zero to almost zero editing (just cutting of stuff at the start and end that isn't part of the song). Very much IMHO I think it's best to approach it as doing it for yourself, to improve your playing, rather than making things nice for presentation purposes. In my experience if I'm "on" then the sound quality doesn't really matter, plus I know that I got there the old-fashioned way, by actually playing the part right. Anyways, I'm an old-school sort of person so it's o.k. to disregard all of what I just wrote.

    I like the idea of the EAD10, but it's just pricey enough ($600 now) that I'd rather save up and get an interface + 2-4 mics, stands, and cables. Better audio quality, expandable, can be used to record other instruments, and no extraneous features. (And it doesn't prevent me from mounting percussion to my bass drum hoop.) If you have extra cymbal stands, you can get an adapter and use them as mic stands to save money as well. Maybe if there were a version of the EAD10 that's just for recording, without the effects and triggers, for ~$350 or so, I'd consider it.
    BTW, stereo mini jack = 3.5mm = 1/8", not 1/16".

    I don’t record super hi quality stuff for my TH-cam channel, but something Iydo is mic the drums with 3 mics, a kick an overhead and maybe a snare. But I record sound and video at the same time, take an out from the mixer and plug it in the camera. save me a lot of editing, which is something I don’t like to do anyway. And I don’t use special lighting or anything, just try to get everything done in one take. I guess I do it more for my own enjoyment than anything else. Anyway, good video.

    I have a solution for you to be able to hit record from behind the drums. A Bluetooth keyboard for your laptop. In Logic Pro, I just hit R to record, spacebar to stop etc. Hope that helps. Thanks for the tips.

    And: here’s one more (in between) step/option. The EAD10 with 5 extra triggers. Some more money, but then you can really even out the sound and control the EAD10 in a better way.

    Can you use the EAD10 with a separate interface?
    Say, I wanted to have the drums mainly from the EAD10 + 2 overhead mics for cymbals?
    And on the EAD10, does it just clean up your existing drum sounds according to whatever preset you use or does it more or less sample replace the pieces(drum shells primarily)??

  • @Swifty142
    @Swifty142 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Wait why bother setting up your 20 mics if you don't even mix them?! Sounded worse than the EAD mic, at least that was in proper stereo.

    Nice. The only thing I might implement in the future is the multi-cam angle, but apparently I am already on the so called "pro" level, recording Weckl, Porcaro, Garibaldi and Portnoy with a DSLR overhead, teamed with a bunch of mics. Then post prod in Premiere or Vegas. The only vid that was frowned upon by YT so far was Erotomania since Petrucci apparently guards his playing immensely:(. Worked fine with just the bass and Moore though.
    As for your monitoring/playback dilemma: I listen back to the drumless track (fixed in iZotope RX) on my Iphone - not in the DAW. Still need to go and hit Record a few feet/meters away, but no rush, since I line the drumless track up with my final multi take afterwards. Remote control on the camera though.

    Hold on, for the EAD10 ‘follow the same procedure’?? Don’t do that! The whole point of the EAD is it means you don’t have to do any of those things.
    You import the track into your iPhone (drumless via Moises if you like), record your cover using your phone (the EAD pairs with a free app) then that’s it. Done.
    The video, drum audio and original track are all ready to export (adjusting your drum versus track level beforehand in the app if required) and upload to TH-cam, Insta, etc. You don’t need a laptop or video editing software.
