      The Maicos packed on a ton of weight when they went from twin shocks to mono. They had to do the switch to keep with the fashion, but didn't have the money to get weight and linkage geometry etc sorted. Husky stayed twin-shock and let Ohlins create rising-rate internally with valving. They worked amazing but no one bought it because it looked like "old tech".
      The Sand Spider motor in a twin-shock 81 frame is a real weapon.

    What kind of mix you use? You think amsoil interceptor is alright? Its what I have been using in my sled and bike but people say it is garbage

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interceptor is a good quality product, but like any 2-stroke oil it has compromises. Interceptor is primarily intended to be used in oil injection systems on snowmobiles. Injector oils must be thin in order to flow correctly through pumps and lines. Rings and bores like a good amount of thin oil, the bottom end last longer with a lower dose of thicker oil. Because Interceptor is meant for water-cooled engines in cold conditions, it's made to burn clean and resist carbon fouling and sticking, at the cost of lower performance at extreme high temperature. But, it is still a very high quality high-performance synthetic, so as long as you mix in a reasonable amount of it it's hard to go wrong. It's much better than anything that was available when these bikes were new.
      If your bike is water-cooled and has exhaust power valves, and you don't spend a lot of time completely flat-out, the clean burning nature of Interceptor will be great. If you ride harder it have an air-cooled engine, Dominator is thicker and resists heat better, but it's dirtier. Hard riding and high temperatures keep the engine from gumming up as fast. But honestly, Dominator is still pretty dang clean. I would personally use Dominator in any "modern" premix bike, and adjust the mix ratio according to what kind of riding I'm doing. More RPM = more oil. Bigger cylinder = more oil. In tight trail riding on a 125 you might need very little, because at low RPM the oil doesn't wash through the engine as aggressively. Road race guys use 16:1 and don't smoke, but the very same engine might smoke a lot at 40:1 in the woods. I like to see light smoke - enough that it's just visible but no more - in the highest-speed riding I intend to do that weekend.
      If you want the ultimate lubrication and do not care about cleanliness, the nuclear option is a castor-based oil like Maxima 927. This stuff LOVES extreme heat and works better and better the hotter things get, making it perfect for an air-cooled engine ridden hard in hot weather. Castor is nasty compared to synthetic, so expect more smoke, more carbon buildup, more sticky icky in the ring lands and power valves, etc. It also likes to un-mix with gas at low temperatures, so avoid it in cold weather and don't let it sit in a gas can too long. You can totally use castor in a water-cooled power valve engine, but it probably only makes sense if you race for money and tear it down to clean it frequently anyway. I use castor in my vintage bikes because they're all air-cooled, non-PV, and I do get to use WOT pretty often where I ride. If any of those 3 things weren't true I'd use a high quality synthetic like Dominator instead.
      Idk what the Kaplan guys use. Best of luck with your bike! And remember, modern oils are all so good that you can get "wrong" and do just fine for decades. It's not that big of a deal.

    • @adamsmith5913
      @adamsmith5913 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JETZcorp wow, thanks. That was the best reply from an expert at mixing. I mix 32:1 and do not go that hard on it and it is jetted really rich. When I rebuilt it last year after sitting in the shed for 12 years the PV was so full of splooge it wouldn't even budge. I used to run whatever I could find back then I was 17 last time it was running. I have a 04 kdx220. And sled has water cooled 530 twin suzuki engine. At 32:1 the interceptor in definitely not burning clean, it makes really light/thin splooge leaking out the exhaust and quite a bit. It was always jetted really rich from factory specs. I have all the different sizes jets that I ordered from china but have not attempted that yet.
