    I was an apprentice at Maico and the owner of an MC 440. Due to the expected Kickstarter setback, we had a different starting procedure. Tilt the motorcycle slightly on its side, step on the kick starter with your right foot and then, hopefully in time, let your foot slide backwards off the kick starter immediately after the step. We were always warned that some US boys broke their foot while kicking a Maico 😉

    I strongly recommend you fit and use a decompressor valve ,two reasons are it makes it easier to start and takes away some of the strain from kickstart pedal and mechanism . This tip is relevant for all Maico open class engines .

    • @1crazypj
      @1crazypj ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had a 490 Alpha 1 for eight years and never had any problems kick starting it if temperature was above freezing.
      You have to use tickler until fuel comes out overflow pipes (rotate them on spigots so they are pointing up)
      It was incredibly stable at speed but pretty useless on a 'super-cross' type track with a lot of tight turns

    • @davew9360
      @davew9360 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1crazypj Yep , ALPHA one totally different engine but same applies , you must have and use a decomp valve for starting.

      @@davew9360 Only real difference was reed valves on the later Maico motor.
      Nope, I never used decompressor after first few days. The main problem I've found is people try and start four-stroke and open class MX bikes like they were worn out 125cc two stokes and 'slap kick' instead of kick-starting properly.
      I remember doing an MOT (British vehicle safety inspection) on a Vincent Rapide 1000cc V-twin back in the 80's.
      Owner said I could ride it if I could start it. He didn't know I had learned to kick-start my fathers Panther 120 (650 single with 'half compression' cam plus a de-compressor for starting. My father always removed de-compressor as a 'security measure'. I first tried when I was 14, at that time it launched me over the bars but I was probably only 85 lbs at the time.
      If you know what your doing, you won't have problems, even the notorious Yamaha DT175 kickstarts lasted fi9ne (it was pretty weak being designed for a 100cc motor originally)

    • @davew9360

      @@1crazypj Reed valve was a factory option on 1981 open class motors and standard on 1983 on all MAICO engines . Upto 1982 and 1983 motors are totaly different ,earlier are primary chain drive and later are gear drive with totaly different gears ,clutch and casings etc. As I say it is essential to have and to use a decomp valve on an open class MAICO. Decomp valve on a four stroke is a totaly different thing and is not used in the same way.

    • @1crazypj
      @1crazypj ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davew9360 I had it 8 years, never had kickstart problems.
      know the difference between four stroke and two stroke decompressor use (after all, I've been working on bikes since 1968 including at Honda, Suzuki, BMW, Vespa, MZ and Yamaha multi line dealers where I eneded up running workshops) I also worked on majority of European dirt bikes (OSSA, Montessa, Various small manufacturers I can't even remeber the names) as I was in Britain.
      I did not specialise however and though it was only the factory bikes available with reed valve in 1981/82? I do have a set of factory front forks, about an extra 30mm travel compared to the production bikes

    You have to "tickle" the bing carb! My Dad owned 11 Maico's. Use your two fingers to block each of the overflow hoses on the carb. Then depress the black drain / tickle button to flow fuel into the carb. Should then only take 3 kicks at max to start.

    The chain is too tight, it gets tighter at mid stroke of travel, I pull the shock and run it thru the range of travel to find where adjustment needs to be set. I do that on any of the Maico's I work on, single or twin shock, takes the stress off of the counter shaft overting engine damage. Have fun on the 490, FYI 82-83 had a very heavy swingarm, there was an aftermarket aluminum swingarm available back in the day if you can find one to shave some weight.

      Put a ratchet strap over frame with the seat off (so you don't destroy cover, foam or base) and line up the sprocket center, swing arm pivot bolt and axle bolt, When they are in line it's the tightest position. It's something good to know if you work on bikes, particularly Busa's, Kawasaki etc with a 8"--12" extension bolted on swing arm to play drag racer

Had a 250 same year, wish I still had it. Like another poster said ,chain adjustment very important on that bike. Not to tight ,will damage output bearing or rear hub, but not to loose because those stock swing arms flexed a lot. I put a Wheelsmith aluminum on my 250. Helped a lot. My chain used to come off all the time.

    I'm 5' 11".
    Bike had had a few modifications and made 63bhp so significantly more power than modern open class four strokes
    Chain looks a bit tight, best way to adjust it is compress suspension so sprocket, swing arm pivot and rear axle are all in line then set about 3/8"slack,
    I had Corte Cosso rear shock (as used by Ferrari) It had been re-built and re-valved and really needed it
    Corte Cosso found out off road motorcycles give shock a very hard time and went back to doing car stuff

Go ahead and weld up the rest of this year's batch of bikes using these dimensions and design. My dad still has his old 1994 kx250. I'm a die hard Yamaha guy but I get on his old kx from time to time and man, that must have been a revolutionary motorcycle back then. I mean we put v force reeds on it, race tech gold valves and stiffer springs, pro circuit rear linkage, D1h top and bottom t clamps, pastrana bend pro tapers (his mx bend not his freestyle bend) nak head, pro circuit works expansion chamber and r1304 silencer, new lectron billet carb, black excel wheels with purple talon hubs, and it has a 2014 yz250 rear shock because they just work. We're gonna go with some 52mm kayaba bumper forks on the front in the near future because the forks are the weak link they flex a lot when I ride it 10/10ths (I'm a 6'5 240 pound top 3 guy in our local vet pro class) and it stretches hardware. It's the weirdest thing and its not the t clamps. It did it WAAAY worse with the OE ones these d1h actually helped a lot but, they're just not up to the task I think it's because we're running such stiff springs too my dad and i really prefer a very rigid setup as the tracks around here arent rough they're just all jumps. But I love that old kx man we put black 2002 plastics on it, i powdercoated the frame this metallic kawi green, pulled the stock seat foam off my 2023 yz250 2 stroke because i always have to run a tall guy seat and with a new gripoer seat cover it made such a huge difference. I can't stand a soft seat man. I have a 325 big bore kit in my yz already so my bike just blows it's rad shrouds off but I still love riding it. It probably makes close to 50 hp with all the stuff we've done it's not slow at all. My yz is just an absolute rocketship. I mean I get top 3 finishes in the vet pro class where everyone is riding built 450s the thing is ridiculous.

    There are several videos you should watch if you are interested in Maico and why it went away. Like most great companies that are partnerships. It was doomed once the brothers started to dislike each other. They basically sabotaged the design so one could take control of the company. My understanding was in 1980 or 81 the bike was so much better than everyone else’s that it’s geometry is still copied today. All of the major Japanese manufacturers bought a Maico and reverse, engineered it to make new motorcycles.

    What did Noleen’s do with your forks? Did they do the Cartridge Conversion or just make changes to the stock Damping Rods?

    • @derekvalenzuela492
      @derekvalenzuela492  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I cant remember to be honest. I remember them telling me they put some honda parts in and the fork doesent need air now to make adjustments. The schrader valve is now used to bleed off any air pressure.

      @@derekvalenzuela492 They did the Cartridge Conversion then. Good to know. I’m struggling deciding to go that route or the Race Tech Gold Valve way.
