      I've witnessed deer stopping in their tracks to figure out where the sound is coming from. So while loud pipes may not save your life with humans, they WILL get an animal's attention from farther away giving you more time to react thus saving your life.

      "Doesn't matter how loud your exhaust is" is a fundamentally wrong statement rgd the laws of physics. You can say it matters less, but it definitely is more audible the louder a sound is. Esp if windows are open/old poorly insulated cars. We have all heard straight piped cars from the next street over that makes you look around. If back protectors save you 5% of the time, loud pipes will save you at least 10%. And I definitely would not discourage people from doing anything that could save their lives/limbs even 1% of the time.

      fact i live in australia and have been riding at track on rc390 every now and again i think id live on a r1 if i could but i have to stay under 650cc or a ceratain power to wieght

    As my old man told me when I got my first bike, little CBR600 FY with the foxeyes, loved that thing...anyway, he said "there are old riders, there are bold riders, but I don't know many old bold riders" after I smashed myself up on a curb 3 years later I understood him. Got out of hospital, took the insurance money and bought another.

      My girlfriend said that my dog could hear my bike , he'd go wait at the door for a few minutes I got home. I miss that dog , he was awesome.

    Facts. Yesterday I was a passenger in a car and didn't know a bike was nearby until it pulled alongside us, but his exhaust was so loud I heard him for at least a half mile of distance between us. He either had straight pipes or no pipes, I'm actually not sure which.

    On #4 - one of my MSF instructors shared a story about riding through a deer carcass (it was probably a few days old) and coming out fine. The shop didn't like how much cleaning they had to do with his bike, though.

    Loud pipes don't save lives, just like high-vis gear doesn't guarantee that you'll be seen and acknowledged. It's just another form of visibility, not a guarantee of safety. But still, if even one person a week hears my bike as I move through their blind spot and it prevents them from trying to change lanes into me, I think it's worth it.

      @@JohnnyD1993 Unless your motorcycle travels faster than sound, that's a poor argument. You can definitely hear motorcycles with loud pipes coming from behind on the freeway at a "react-able" distance. Then you have in-city riding at slower speeds where it's even more noticeable at greater distances

      @@ice5098 exactly! I have stock pipe and a can hear a guy approaching me with straight exhaust. I don't know why they pretend that we live in vacuum. Sound from exhaust goes in all directions

      My argument stands. If you want to claim it's for safety point your exhaust forward.
      If you don't think your exhaust sound is unpleasant go run a jackhammer without ear protection. Extremely similar DB levels and it's painful to run one without ear pro.

    Excellent video again. Best expression of why track tyres are useless on the road I've come across. I've seen some car accidents that are absolutely because of poor tyre choice, one where circuit wet slicks were being used on the road, made worse because they had too many miles on them, and also were expired.

    Yammie yesterday morning I absolutely smoked a raccoon going 60 on a back road and stayed upright. The only thing it hurt was my ego. I cracked some of the lower plastics on my ninja but other than that I’m fine. I stopped to gather myself because I was a bit shook but no leaks, tires had air, and I was on my way

    Most guys ik that lower there psi in the tires is on in the rear and that's so they can hook em better if they're stunting, creates more surface area contact which makes more grip

    The only time "Tire = faster" is true is when you ride a dualsport and go from a 70/30 offroad tire to something like a 80/20 street tire. My DR picked up about 15kph in top end speed and at least another 60km for range when I switched to essentially a full street tire.

      There is always a definitive advantage to use a RR vs a touring tyre on any bike. Especially for the front wheel. Of course, you have to let it heat if you live in a cold country, but I live in Seville. Advantage in curves, as very sticky tyres can even lower your max speed in straight bits precisely due to the fact that it sticks to the road. :-)

    O.K. we need the last word on the 'Loud Pipes" debate and I with my considerable wisdom and experience will provide it.
    Yes, I have heard motorcycles in my blind spot due to their load exhaust.
    No, we don't have to hear them from two counties over.
    Final word, Get a moderately louder exhaust if you feel the need or like the note but please spare the rest of us from the straight pipes or megaphone skull poppers.
    Personally, I'll take my stock pipes and the 'risk'.,

    Loud pipes absolutely do save lives. Would've walked straight into a bike on a blind corner while crossing the road, but I heard him coming first. He came out on the road exactly where I would have been standing/walking in a car park had I not heard him. I genuinely remember having the thought "op, can hear a bike, should probably just hang back a second see if he's coming first". There has also been multiple instances where I myself have been riding, filtering especially, where the sound of my bike genuinely helps car drivers know that I'm there. I know this from experiencing a 125 that you could barely hear, and having more cars pull out on me than ever, to a 650 with a decent sound to it, and significantly less people pulling out on me, moving over, or realizing that i'm coming up. Driving down residential areas with 10 ton of parked cars either side, I can see people are hearing me, before they're seeing me, and they wait before crossing. They are so important, and they make such a difference. I cannot agree with your statement on that at all.

      I can't even begin to count how many times I have seen loud pipes cause dangerous situations on the road. Usually from spooking other riders or cars causing them to swerve without looking at what they swerve into. With cars especially the driver hearse it and swerves away from the largest thing they see visually which is usually another car or truck. Loud pipes saves lives is nothing more than a sales pitch that started in the mid 70's as a way for dealerships to sell aftermarket products on new bikes and get the wife's approval. Better off learning to ride as though you are invisible always giving yourself as many outs as possible rather than relying on other people seeing or hearing you. Electric bikes are an entry different experience because you are able to hear everything going on around you. It is especially a noticeable difference in intersections.

I was not even talking about obnoxiously loud pipes that pop and bang, that you can hear from 10 miles away. Not that I personally have any issue with that at all myself, nor believe they could possibly cause any form of accident through sound alone. I was talking about having a reasonable amount of sound so you can actually be heard.

      @@Kazakye Who the hell is that jumpy? If you ask me, the majority of people who have licenses probably shouldn't be driving. I have personally seen it time and time again over the last 47 years of riding. I have seen track day riders get spooked by loud pipes as they are passed in corners causing them to straight line off the track. Loud pipes save lives is a myth. I'm not opposed to loud pipes, I have tested some pre production pipes and full systems for a few manufacturers that have been obnoxiously loud, but they definitely don't save lives.

      @@MexiKen516 since riding like you're invisible and having an out is your end all solution I suppose we shouldn't wear anything reflective, or any gear at all right? No one is dumb enough to assume loud pipes are a 100% solution, but my loud pipes do not prevent me from being alert, wearing reflective gear, and assuming I'm invisible. Sure on the highway cars likely won't hear you coming up, but with slower traffic and more pedestrians you can easily hear loud cars, motorcycles, and even trucks with mud tires coming down the road before you see them.

    i use 99/97 octane fuel. but ive got to say, loud pipes may not save lives. but they definitely make you more known on the road. just like louder horns.

    Loud pipes save pedestrian and cyclists lives. Approach a group of cyclists or a busy city plaza on an electric bike and tell me how unaware and spooked everyone acts compared to a loud bike

      its safer to just stay out of the blind spot :-) But yes, loud pipes can alert people to your presence long before a wreck situation is happening. It can help, that the people you are driving down the road for the next 10 miles around know you are there instead of just texting the whole 10 miles.

    The loud pipe on my bike saves the lives of wild critters from squirrels and rabbits to deer and birds. I watch them scatter well before I get into range close enough to have an issue with them.. This in turn also may save my life, too.

    For me the helmet and hearing myth and ear plug one are actually true due to me having conductive hearing loss but for most folks it's complete and utter bs and loud pipes save lives for me because I can here my engine rpm and make shore I'm in the correct gear

    Loud pipe kinda really saved my life, i hate loud obnoxiously exhaust, but for me there is a sweet spot where pedestrian and alike could here you from a distance and get their attention to be aware that you are coming.
    Multiple times i been crossed here in the streets if philippines when i still had my stock exhaust, now that i have a straight exhaust pedestrian and puv vehicles now hear me coming and are aware.
    it differs from country to country.

    Regarding ear plugs- you can get custom made ear plugs to fit your ears for about $100. They work great and allowed me to keep riding after ear damage that caused ringing due to the wind noies. Google "custom made earplugs" for a specialist near you.

    Also if you believe that one time in history someone has heard a motorcycle before they saw it and looked preventing a potentially fatal accident, then the statement is true. And I’m pretty sure if we’re all honest with ourselves we can think of more than one time loud pipes have alerted you or someone else.

Go by a blow horn, since is clear you don't have a bike with loud pipes, and point it away from you. Activate the blow horn. Notice how even though its pointed away from you you can still hear it, and pretty loudly I might add. If you point it toward you it will be even louder but its plenty loud when pointed away from you as well. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

    I drive a 125cc on highways (it's legal in my country) almost everyday to go to work and I can tell you I had more close calls while riding in the streets. It just takes time to pass trucks is all.

      Every country has their own grading system, so 95 for you is the exact same as 87 for the US

    I have my loud pipes save me all the time and have for decades! I will pop around a curve and the deer are already running Instead of just standing there in the road!

    Not a fan of loud pipes but it can't possibly do anything other than help signal your approach. What you said about Doppler is often true of quiet pipes because the limited sound output is too high pitched to be prominent from the front with Doppler shift: however loud pipes allow one to hear cylinder beats and usually at a low enough pitch to still be audible even with Doppler. Low pitch sound diffracts more easily and scatters widely and you can witness this by listening to a Harley or a single with a slip-on exhaust: they can easily be heard on approach. As an additional physics lesson, high octane fuel absolutely can boost power because eliminating pre ignition does just that, allowing the piston to compress further before ignition and getting a longer stroke after

      I should add that the high octane only works in engines with a compression ratio which is suited to it, but seeing as the difference was noticeable even in an old GM C16SE engine I had in a car I think most recent bikes would benefit.

    1:15 As a learner rider with 8 hours under my belt I nolonger see my helmet while rideing, just like my nose, if I want to see it I can look at it but when I am doing something else (like rideing) I don't notice it.

    I’ve been wearing noise-canceling headphones under my helmet for ten years. The only time this hasn’t worked for me (10 years of riding city/country, over 100k miles on two wheels) is when people try to talk to me with my helmet on.
    No, I can’t hear you at all. I can hear everything else, though.
    That said, I’m kinda going deaf there days (genetic) and I can barely make out what most folks are saying these days with or without a helmet. 😓
    Also, being older, I see my peers riding without a helmet (as it’s legal where I just moved to) and I get a lot of amused glances my way for being in full gear.
    I like my brain in my head and I’ve been hit by a car once already (which the only part of me injured was the part without proper gear as the old legs have a bit of road-rash).

      @@sipho.tography I’ve got multiple pairs. The Bose do the best for noise cancellation (but were bloody expensive and if your helmet is tight, they’ll ache after about 200 miles or so, but save your sanity), but my go-to is a pair of Plantronics Go 410s (equal parts affordable, durable and with decent sound quality)

    Hi yammie, I have a very simple question- the bikes producing 200 bhp are obviously attractive, but how much power is actually usable in daily life. If one never has to visit a track....
    I'm from India and royal enfield 650(47bhp stock) is one third the price of honda cb 650r and half the price of z 650
    And with full system exhaust, air filter and piggyback ecu enfirld's power can be increased to about 60 bhp....
    Please advise, I currently ride a 30 bhp (334cc) bobber

      It depends how you ride, legally no, you cant even come close to using 200 hp but if ur a squid yes. If you want to abide by the law stick to something under 100hp maybe a mt07

      @@skylinesquid mt07 hasn't come to India yet. Middleweight options are kawasaki 650s, honda 650s, Benelli , triumph, and royal Enfield. Apparently someone bought India's first new Hayabusa recently
      Price comparison wise, royal Enfield costs 320000 rs on road. All these others cost upwards of 700000 rs
      75 rs is 1 dollar

    Also... them pebbles ain't no joke and neither are them cross walk paint with the high sheen on them. They get slick if a little wet. I've had the ass end kick out on me when I was making a 90° right turn over a crosswalk.😶

    Here's the thing about loud pipes:
    1: A loud pipe produces more sound than a quieter pipe. Which travels farther, and with more energy.
    2: The frequency of the exhaust noise matter more than the DB. Higher pitched sounds are deflected and absorbed by materials much easier. Anyone with any audio tech knowledge knows that the hardest sound to deaden is low frequency sounds because they pass right through objects.
    The fact remains that a High pitch loud pipe will be killed by the cars body before a low pitch loud pipe will. Running a low pitch quieter pipe is actually better than running a high pitch louder pipe simply because of sound absorption.
    What you're describing with the Doppler effect is actually a pitch/frequency change. If you throw a baseball out of a car going 20mph, you're adding 20mph to your throw. If you throw sound from an object, your speed increases the compression which then increases the pitch. Higher pitch = more easily absorbed. Then when leaving you're sound is pulled away, making the pitch lower which is easier to hear.
    This means that pitch shifting your exhaust down will increase the likelyhood of someone hearing you. Increase the DB level will also increase the likelihood of someone hearing you. Making ANYTHING more agressive increases the likelihood of someone seeing/hearing you. Brighter lights, neon, reflectors and yes, a louder bike.
    People have literally been hit by electric vehicles in parking lots because they didn't hear them, or thought they were a bicycle.
    Sound plays an import role for drivers, just *not as much as sight*. Which is where this notion of "doesn't matter how loud the pipes are" come from. Because people think drivers are deaf and only use their vision. Which couldn't be farther from the truth. They just use it *more*. For instance, Riding a zero FX with literally no sound vs riding a fat pipe is going to change how people react when you're nearby. It's just a fact that more noise is more noticeable (depending on frequency and blockage to the ears)

    I ran over a frigging full wire hub cap in the road once! On the highway ahead of me was an 80's Caddy with those damn chrome wire hub caps when one popped off rolled across the lane and hit the center divider and bounced right back directly in front of me. I thought I was going to go down but the Busa rolled right over it. Sure it felt like I hit a speed bump at 55mph but went right over with no damage. Glad it wasn't a pebble!

    Have had no issues with Q3 or Q4 on the street. No issues in rain either. Actually pretty impressed with them on the street.

      I've had the Q3+ on a Supermotard and a supersport. Plenty of tire for my skill and I can't recall hydroplaning yet.

    Id have to disagree with the tire thing somewhat, slicks 100% agree, but i ride and rc8 with q3+s and can say they heat up very fast q4s even faster. Sport touring tires on sport bikes only make sense if you wear a flat bar into the tread by the time you’re done with them

      There is literally never a situation in which your pipes saves your life. Similarly with honking. There is never a situation where honking your horn will save your life. How many emergency vehicles have been behind you in a car and you didn't hear their sirens until they were literally in front of you already? Those are gonna catch driver's attention more than an exhaust because they've been trained to pay attention, vs most car drivers forgetting motorcyclists still drive on public roads.

    Loud Pipes work very well in parking lots to stop people reversing into me and in pedestrian crosswalks to tell people to hurry the fuck up. (that saves their life)

      Yep if you want to maintain the engine you're better off staying on the oil changes and not leaving stale gas in the carbs if storing for prolonged periods. Unless your bike is super old and not tolerant to ethanol additive.

    Hummmmmm. OK... I was with you till the end. Fuel octane has nothing to do with "Detonation".... it has to do with the speed the fuel burns at. Also, your engine doesn't "Develop more compression".... that is designed into the engine. And, the pre-detonation "Knock" is NEVER from a second spark in the engine. (where would it come from?) it can be cased by a hot spot... but is generally caused by the rapid, or accelerated burn that goes out of control, and completes before TDC from either too much ignition timing, or too high of compression for the fuel. (Think diesel, and auto ignition without a spark). But to your point... YES... it will absolutely cause engine damage if it's out of control. Now on the REALY bad OPPOSITE side of "Knock"... (and to support your thoughts of not going faster) If you have an engine that is designed and tuned for 87... and you put 93 in it to "Go Faster"... the slower burring, high octane fuel will not be done burning when that exhaust stroke hits. SO... you will over hear the piston crowns, and over heat the exhaust valves. That could lead to melted pistons and melted valves. Back in the day... I always laughed at the 2 stroke guys who would melt pistons every few races, burning race fuel. They would blame lack of oil or bad oil... I would tell them every time, they melted the piston crown with the fuel. (Easy to pick out, it would be a total collapse facing the exhaust port) I went as far as to show them that with caster oil... and CAMPPING FUEL, (FYI 65 oct) I could run my WR250 just as hard as on 87. (yes, a re-jet was needed, but smelled great) Anyway... keep up the good work !!

    More grip on my 600 makes not safer it gets warm and that thing tries to buck you off like a wild Bronco. Very fun out in the rain though As I can power slide like Rossi Q3's would probably go with less grip next time

    I'm sorry but I had unbaffled 2.5" straights on a VTX1800 for a few weeks. They were obnoxiously loud. The Harley crowd could not deal with them. I let a friend try it and you could hear this bike easily 1/2 mile away approaching at street speeds and when he drove past on the freeway you could hear it coming a LONG way before it arrived. I understand sound and doppler very well as I was a Sonar Tech in the Navy. Loud is Loud. Loud pipes cannot be ignored. Sound reverberates off of sound walls, bridge abutments, other vehicles, the road ect

    One statistic missing in why older people get killed. From my experience. Most older people have more free time, to put down more miles. Do not disagree with Yammie. I ride with BACA, us older people can afford to and have the time to go to events every weekend. Some of our younger riders got things like family and work getting in the way. My wife and I think nothing of hopping on our bikes and cruising a few hundred miles on a Tuesday, just because. I am on pace for 20K miles in a year, before retirement maybe 5 or 6 K, with that much commuting to work.

    Q3+ owner here. They are cooking hot even on short rides. They get up to temp within a mile or so. And they stay hot for probably 30 minutes or more after a longer ride. They are sick tires. I wouldn't chage them out for anything else.

    I'd agree loud pipes don't necessarily save lives... but you can absolutely hear them long before they get to you. I can hear bikes before they even turn onto my street. Another hard aspect of proving they do/don't save lives is.. If someone noticed a bike by sound, therefore didn't cut them off and potentially kill them, you would never know about it. The ONLY logical statement you could make on this topic is they can POTENTIALLY save lives (unless you can pull evidence to support one statement or another). Ever notice on drive-by videos showcasing exhaust you can hear the bike before it passes the camera? hm
    also I hit a deer, didn't wreck. Myth busted lol

    I always put 93 in my 1995 Harley road king and I thought that’s what I’m supposed to put in every bike but is that causing late detonation? Should I be using 87 or 89 instead?

I loved building cars and bikes outside of work old twins like yours were great projects and easy to work on as well as being fun to ride. I miss old school and having no computers to deal with. As much as I still work on them and understand them there’s nothing like keeping things simply mechanical.

    For 6 and 7. That's why Michelin Road 5s are the go to street tyre. They grip enough to drag knee on trackdays straight from the driveway with barely any warming up needed. And then in the wet they're like you've got gluesticks as tyres

    Yammie, question; does the Rebel 1100 (DCT) would make a good first bike(I'm 26)? I had been hesitated to enter or ride a bike do to the manual/clutch. This seems perfect for a guy with my issue. Of you can make a video on it me and a lot of people with only automatic transmission (on cars) experience would appreciate A LOT! Thanks!!

      Late response but learn how to use a clutch. It's not that hard. I've never owned anything (car or bike) without a clutch and while I realize that I am far more accustomed to it than most people, I cannot understand why everyone is so intimidated by it.

    Also like to mention ,track tyres are made to be lighter than road tyres to improve unsprung weight and lighter wheels turn quicker. However lighter tyres will not cope with road conditions or higher mileages Race tyres on road bikes are illegal in many countries

    If anyone were to ride on the north western motorway in Auckland New Zealand during afternoon peak times... they would change their mind on highway riding being safer, and stick to the main roads through the suburbs. particularly if they were to ride past the Patiki road onramp, past the Te-Atatu rd over bridge, to the Linciln Rd off ramp. It's scary enough inside a high tensile steel shell!
