"She changed the face of pop music forever" - David Foster. Donna Summer doesn't doesn't enough credit for who she was in music. She definitely was the queen of disco (queen of the genre), but more importantly she was Pop Music's first female mega star. Selling millions worldwide and pushing the barriers by crossing into multiple genres. She was the first female artist and the first black artist to take 3 albums to the top of the Billboard 200 albums back to back. That usually get reduced to her being the first artist to have 3#1 double albums (they just happened to be multi-platinum selling albums). She was the first female to (dominate the Billboard charts) repeat having the #1 single and #1 album simultaneously on the pop charts (Hot 100/200 albums), 3 times in 8 months. She was the first to have 2 singles in the top 3, the first to have 2 #1 singles in the top 5 and the top 3 (at the same time). She scored 9 consecutive top 5 singles starting with this song, from Aug 78 to Oct 80, all selling over a million copies or better (a physical sales record). She was the first artist to have 3 #1 singles, and 5 top 10 and/or 5 top 5 singles in a calendar year (79).The first female to sit on top of 3 major Billboard charts at the same time. She was the most commercially successful female artist of the 70s (in the US and worldwide). She was a top 10 artist on the worldwide charts for 4 consecutive years 76,77, 78 & 79. She was the first black female to be played in heavy rotation on MTV (1983), setting a precedent by having 3 consecutive videos played in heavy rotation. Not surpassed until Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1989. She is the only artist to be nominated for a Grammy Award in 5 different genres (at least 3 times each), and the only artist to win a Grammy in 4 different genres. Named the "Diva De Tutti Dive", the first true diva of the modern pop era by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mary J Blige, Lenny Kravitz and Stevie Wonder have referred to her as a game changer. Her major hits were - Love To Love You Baby (76) #2, I Feel Love (77) #6, Last Dance (78) #3, Mac Arthur Park (78) #1, Heaven Knows (79) #4, Hot Stuff (79) #1, Bad Girls (79) #1, Dim All The Lights (79) #2, No More Tears (Enough is Enough) (79) #1, On The Radio (80) #5, The Wanderer (80) #3, Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger) (82) #10, She Works Hard for The Money (83) #3, This Time I Know It's For Real (89) #7.
I grew up on Donna Summer. We had all her albums in our house upon release. My mother was obsessed and I've been a lifelong fan. That being said you really brought the stats! Bravo! The specs are astounding, especially the way you laid them all out the way you did. Before Beyonce, Mariah, Madonna, Ariana, etc. there was Donna Summer. She was the Queen of Pop. The flavor of pop happened to be disco and she got short-changed with that title. Still, the Queen of anything is quite the accomplishment. Not to mention she wrote or co-wrote most of her songs. And spoke fluent German. And her live performances were beyond comparison. I saw her live and her voice was fully visceral. It was an experience. Anyway, great post!!
Donna Summer had that skill of being able to project her voice, voluminously, without wildly contorting her face, neck, or torso. This is the kind of discipline that comes with training in musical theater, which is where Donna spent the first eight years of her professional career.
More Donna Summer hits: Love To Love You Baby, Hot Stuff, She Works Hard For The Money, Bad Girls. Hard to over-estimate how big a star she was in the 70's and 80's. The Queen of Disco.
Very underrated only because her peak occurred at the height of the disco craze where she was known as the queen of Disco ,something that was associated with her name till the very end which in the hindsight is extremely unfair. Her vocal range is just mind blowing. I would definitely rank herr as one the very best vocalists in the history of the mankind.
i knew Donna Summers, i used to fill in as her drummer on a few occasions . she is a icon , a great singer and i will always miss her and her amazing music.
Donna Summer was the 'Whitney Houston' of my generation in the 70's .. She was beautiful and had one powerful voice. We lost her way to young to cancer I believe ..
I’m so HAPPY right now. I know people say this a lot but.. not only did she shape & own the disco decade, her vocal pedigree is off the charts starting off in Broadway. Until the day she passed she sounded the same too. THX’s amaz reaction & insights! ♥️ yawl
Thank you guys so much for exposing Donna Summer to a whole new younger generation. What Beyoncé is to people now a days is what Donna Summer was to those of us that grew up in the 70s, she was beyond phenomenal. The great Patti LaBelle once said that everything Donna Summer did was phenomenal. Even rock and rollers who hated disco loved Donna Summer. Please react to some of her other songs and thank you again ! 🤗
I love Donna Summer. She was the Queen of Disco for sure❤️ Also remember that this video was from the 70's so imagine the quality of today with her voice. Sadly we lost her a while back. Check out the song I feel love.
Ugh!! Donna and Barbara duet will blow your minds! No more tears (Enough is Enough) gotta do it right, Extended Version! Donna Summer... On the Radio, well all her songs. Lol RIP Disco Queen💃❤
One of the greatest performers ever. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee . I'm a hard core rocker but I never changed a radio or TV station channel when she was on.
Thank you for the wonderful comments on Donna. She is truly one the most underrated singers ever. One of the best female singers to ever walk this planet, vocally perfect, amazing tone, absolutely brilliant, true talent, and gorgeous who's voice never changed!!!!! Donna had #1 hits until the year before she died. She is the only artist to have won Grammy's in four different categories, Rock, R&B, Dance and Gospel.
I think you would love all of her hits. One of them is called "Dim all the lights." She holds that note and it's unbelievable. I tried and nearly passed out. Lol
Donna Summer was a Mezzo-Soprano that's why her singing looks effortless. Her large range of vocal tones was a choice, from the soft "whispering waves" to the soulful "there will always be you" to Pop, Rock&Roll, Disco, Gospel, and of course, her sensual tones... even country... her range is unparalleled. OH, she also recorded in German, Italian and perfect Spanish, just saying.
Donna is my idol. I was lucky enough to see her in concert 8 times starting in the early 90's. Her voice only got better and if you want to hear how beautiful it stayed check out her concert from 1999 "VH1 presents Donna Summer, Live and More Encore!" This concert showcases how truly amazing she was singing LIVE!!
Went to a couple of her concerts back in the day. When she began to sing many of us, in unison, just said "oh my God!". What an incredible voice, classy lady, trailblazer and musical icon!
Finally the Queen of Disco Donna Summer! Love her a killer song of hers is the duet with Barbara Streisand" no more tears" oh my gosh when I tell you them together is absolutely stunning ❤️✌️
Donna Summers was a vocal beast you must check out her song Mcarthur Park and yes she was gorgeous and classy and a great performer Great review guys 😃
Your description of Donna was excellent and accurate. I wasn t big on disco but I did love Donna Summer. She was feminine, pretty, always classy and elegant. She loved her fans and everyone loved her. Incredibly popular throughout the world in the late 70 s.
Donna Summer is my all time favorite singer! I was 9 when I heard her the first time, 1979, when she was on the top of her career. Last dance is one of my favorite songs and I still get goose bumps when I hear her sing this song. She got so many great songs; On the radio, She works hard for the money, Love is on the trigger to name a few. Great that you brought her up here!
Definitely do Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love.” It was incredibly innovative and enormously influential in the history of electronic music. Waaaay ahead of its time.
Love me some Donna!, i still have the Vinyl LP Bad Girls from 1979, now i got to get it out and listen to it, there is nothing like listening to a song from back then on Vinyl.
I fell in love with Donna Summer. She was like you said, she is gorgeous. Stunning voice and I had such a crush on her. But ain`t gonna lie. ASIA you could easily be on that stage looking fabulous.
Every dance club, disco, country, whatever; back in the day, closed down to this song, and OMG the floor was packed.... great memories.... good times.... Thx for checking her out. As far as her beauty... yes, she was stunning.... but I am sure BJ will agree... just like you Asia!
Me and my older sister listened to her and had several of her albums. I love her. I thought she was beautiful, and of course could sing! She was amazing! Please do more of Donna Summer.
Donna was an inspiration to me as a teenage girl with a voice. Beautiful person with a powerful voice. Her gospel music is wonderful. But you gotta hear her and Barbra Streisand sing *Enough is Enough* . Just badass
Wow, wow, wow!!! I have always loved Miss Donna Summer but have never seen this stunning performance. She just blows you away, incredible. Thank you for introducing this to me!
Back then, "Last Dance" was always the very last song they played at dances, parties, nightclubs and discos. I don't think I watched the Oscars that year, but I know they usually have all the nominees for best song in a movie performed, so I wonder if they saved this song for last? I don't remember what the other songs were that year, but that would have tough for them ending with this spectacular performance!
YAY!! Thanks for the Donna reaction!! She was SUCH a strong and effortless singer no matter what octave she was singing. Always well poised and elegant. A very underrated singer who would often record her songs in one take! Please do more. Thanks so much!
OMG I was about 14 when this song came out. Too young to get into the discos but, I would dance like I was on Soul Train whenever this song came on. I love Donna Summer. Listen to "Love to Love You Baby" "McArthur Park" and "I Feel Love". She was THE Disco Queen. She also had hits with "Bad Girls" "Hot Stuff" and "No More Tears"
Still have my disco dresses and 6 inch heels, we loved when Donna was played at the disco and the dance floor would be packed with couples dancing and the Hustle line was huge. lol. Donna and Barbra Streisand did a duet that was killer.
I didn’t go out often but I went to a few homecoming dances and to a disco a couple times and I always thought it was great that the last song they played was Donna Summers Last Dance. You just knew that was the end of the evening.
First song my husband and I danced to we were young and single and love started there. He’s gone so many great memories still have a hard time listening to this song. Miss you Stan ❤
"Last Dance" became a critical and commercial success, winning the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and peaked at number three on the Hot 100 chart, all in 1978.
There are 2 women that everything starts and stops for me, and Donna Summer is one of them (Julie Andrews is my other). One of the most underrated singers to ever live. I love listening to her speak. So soft spoken and sweet, and to just know what that voice is capable of. No words. A wonder woman all around.
That’s the reason she was put on earth. To sing beautieful, do great disco songs and make people happy. Rest in peace sweet Donna. 🙏❤️

100% agree. She should definitely be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Oh yeah she did her own hair, make-up and wardrobe too.
Donna Summer had that skill of being able to project her voice, voluminously, without wildly contorting her face, neck, or torso. This is the kind of discipline that comes with training in musical theater, which is where Donna spent the first eight years of her professional career.

Check out “ No More Tears/Enough Is Enough” a Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand duet. Their voices work so well together.
The pride of Boston! RIP Donna! We still love you!
