Really inspiring! I just picked up a tiny mame pot this past week and didn't really know what I was going to do with it. I've been watching all your videos and now I am super excited to give this a go. Thanks for taking the time to make all the videos!
I’m completely in awe with your approach to bonsai I’ve only seen a couple of videos and already learned so much from you thanks for being a youtuber ❤
Fantastic ... I am felling more inclined towards Mame- Mini Trees. I have been watching your channel and love your way of doing things. Many thanks for the time you share 👌👍.
Great trees. I really love the taller one of these two. Beautiful Jin work. Mame are more difficult to style and maintain than the extra large trees we see the bonsai pros working on. The pros don't work on mame.
Watching you work on the mame is so zen to me 😌. I think mame is asking more from you to be more creative because it’s a more stylized design. You have to be more clear on the design in comparison. I haven’t done one before but I am considering to do one in spring. I live in the Netherlands a mame would not survive a first styling just before winter here I think 🤔.
Is fertilizing these trees different than bigger ones? What do you do for soil as its so tiny? I am inspired to try these tiny trees after watching your videos. Thanks for the video!
Fertilizer - Yes, it's easier to use liquid fertilizer rather than solid, but pellets can work. ;we use fish emulsion sometimes (it helps grow moss) and Dyna-Grow "Foliage Pro" sometimes. Soil - We use regular bonsai soil (Akadama, Lava, Pumice) but sifted to a smaller size, about 1/16". We do that by initially sifting out all the fines from the regular soil (which we use for larger trees) and then sifting the dust from the fine particles using a fine screen like those sold as kitchen sieves.
We have more of these pots, they are not listed on our site, but we're going to start stocking them soon! The trees in this video were in pots by Mitsunoba Ito.
Hi! This is a cutting from another Kishu Juniper. The cutting was done first, then the shaping (as opposed to cutting off an already shaped branch.). You can see some of the history of this batch of my trees on our blog: www.bonsaify.com/blogs/phutu-blog/mame-kishu-juniper-bonsai and the cuttings are covered in an article on my older website, phutu.com: phutu.com/kishu-cuttings/
Your mame precision is always so good! I’ll have to practice using tweezers to help get where fat fingers can’t. When growing out those junipers, what was the max size pot they were ever in?
2" x 2" x 3" deep plastic rose pots. The year prior to placing in the ceramic containers I trimmed all the roots into a disk the size of a quarter, then grew them in the 2" plastic again prior to placing in a bonsai container. (you can see some photos at the links I added in the first reply.)
@@Bonsaify Awesome! That's some severe root pruning, seems like that's really almost the diameter of the trunks. What are your thoughts on using a small pond baskets for growing out mame?
There are two tools in there - one is a Kaneshin 6.3" small scissor (it's the black steel one: store.bonsaitonight.com/collections/bonsai-tools/products/trimming-scissors?variant=39514104168598 And the other is a Masakuni Mini wire cutter, which also works well as a mini scissor: store.bonsaitonight.com/collections/bonsai-tools/products/wire-cutters?variant=8965157027901 Unfortunately, the latter is quite expensive. But, for shohin and mame I find it quite useful.
@@Bonsaify Did you let them get trunk girth in gallon pots or such first? If so, for how long? I have some two-year shimpakus that I'd love to style in this manner and am looking to get pots from the site to do so.
Hi Josh - no, these were only ever grown in 2" containers. The bulking of wood isn't really directly dependent on container size in these junipers. They can get bulk as long as they manage to send out runners - the strong branch elongation. I think they spent 4-5 years in 2" containers, and then I potted them into bonsai containers.
Hi There, thanks for the feedback. I sent you an email, and hoping to improve the audio as we move forward. I'm much better at bonsai than I am at audio.
Hi Arnaldo - basically, it's for quick recognition by subscribers. There are various TH-cam tutorials that say this is important. 🤷♂️. TBH, we make these videos for you guys, because we sell bonsai on our website and we want people to have resources to learn from.👍

Absolutely exciting video! The small Mame Bonsai are more difficult to design than a normal size bonsai!
You find this video exciting….you need to get out more..

Beautiful. I am fresh to the hobby but am certainly drawn to mame and shohin trees.

Wow 🌳
Absolutely beautiful 💕🌿🌱🍃new subbed 👌
Eric, can u tell me how much sun light those juniper need to be healthy ?
At least 4-6 hours of direct sun in the growing season is a necessity - 14 hours is better.

@@Bonsaify thank you so much for the information! Bonsai is so much fun and so rewarding :)
Heh. At around 3:45 that other plant looks like it's nearly finished eating an antelope.
You probably had those pot for like ever but do you sell tiny pots or get them from someplace else.

How do you keep them alive in such tiny pots? Would you share your setup?
Living in SF doesn't hurt. But check out this video and the others on the mame playlist: th-cam.com/video/QxHEHi4nt5w/w-d-xo.html
Beatiful mini bonsai, is the trunk a cutting of a branch or is it a seedling?

Hi there, can you make a video on how to grow moss around the pot
Hi! Thanks for asking. Yeah, we can do a video on that, a few people have asked. We'll put it on the list. Cheers.
Seconded. All the tips and tricks for cultivating, keeping it from drying out in summer, and so on would be most appreciated.

These are from a batch I started in 2014.

Ship to alaska?
Yes, we can ship to Alaska. During winter we try to protect trees from cold during shipment by using 72hour heat packs.
@@Bonsaify I live in Alaska so I can’t let my juniper outside yet
