Of any of the sports movies I've ever watched, this is probably the most moving scene for me. As a Badger fan, I can easily see Mark Johnson saying that. His Father was a great coach and even better man. Badger fans have been so blessed to have the Johnson family.
The only two scenes in a sports movie that comes is Gale Sayers making his speech in Brian's Song and about the four minute mark in the Rocky Apollo fight. That is instant teary eyed when the music starts.
Kurt Russell did an AWESOME JOB portraying Herb Brooks in this movie! I have always loved Kurt and honestly believe that he doesn’t get enough credit for his acting skills! He was made to play Herb Brooks! God Bless both Herb and Kurt!
I think Kurt Russell is an under-appreciated actor. I don't know jack about acting but he always seems to bring a warmth to his characters. Even playing a tough guy like Herb he seems to convey something deeper.
As a Football Coach, I tell all my players in Practice #1. I ask. Did you wake up this morning knowing today that you become part of a new Family. Say 25-30yrs from now, you walk into a grocery store or at a gas station and you will see one if the other players here and you will greet each other as a brother from the family that has formed today!
He knew mixing Boston and Minnesota kids was going to be very difficult because of the animosity they have for each other so he gave them all a common “enemy” and got them all to focus their anger and hate onto him to unite them.
@@KevAng039 correct. They even said that in the movie when Doc and Craig Patrick were sitting in line waiting for gas. “If they all hate him, they won’t have time to hate each other”.
It's sad that the real Herb Brooks died in a car accident the same year this film was released, but he will forever be remembered as a coach that unified a United States of America hockey team.
Here’s a tremendous coach. He demands obedience from his players, forcing them to play hockey his way no matter what up to this point in order to keep the kids from running the team. His players fear him like how men fear God, that’s the first step. However, in order to earn true respect from his players before heading to the Olympics he takes into account their opinions on an important matter such as this. His players now trust him, and he trusts them. That is how you lead men.
Ser Davos Seaworth and they picked the perfect actor to play him because Kurt Russell just looks like the kinda guy who commands respect. Like he just walks in and owns the room without saying a word.
He was not forcing them too do anything.. He wanted to change their mind set... To focus as a team. To play for each other..... The same thing that Jimmy Johnson did. When he took over the Cowboys. As talent alone can get you so far. But to win Championships..You want everybody to feel they are part of it...Ken Hitchcock of the Dallas Stars did the same....And walked away with a Stanley Cup...
@@WizzRacing About Jimmy Johnson, his predecessor Tom Landry was also about focusing on the team and playing for each other - he was among the ten greatest coaches of all time.
According to Tim Harrer, the player Coach Brooks had brought in from Minnesota, this happened in real life. Harrer was cut shortly after the conversation.
And I 100% believe every part of it. I believe that Brooks would have put him on the team of not for the conversation, and had no qualms about it because of what happened to him.
That is what some of the players in the movie thought, but I think he was 100% prepared to put Timmy on the team if this confrontation didn't happen. It's the exact same thing that happened to him, except that it happened to him 6 days before the Olympics.
I love how defensive Mac is about this having not been Rizzo's idea (because I'm pretty sure it was Mac's), and how pissed off O.C. gets when Herb says "That kid can flat out play." Because basically he's insinuating that Rizzo (who they all believe is who is going to be replaced with Tim) can't play, and they all know that Rizzo can play. And then Mark Johnson's just like "We're a family" and suddenly all their reactions make sense to themselves.
It's inconceivable that he'd consider replacing of all people, Rizzo, the captain, with anyone. But that's how you get their attention and test their commitment. Pick on the leader the hardest and see if anyone will stand up for him. Mark Johnson, the star player (and likely would-be captain with Rizzo cut), is the one to stand up.
broadstreet21 well Herb made it clear that nobody’s roster spot was safe. And he was especially hard on Rizzo because if word got around that he’d cut the captain, the other guys would wonder where they stood. That’s exactly what he wanted because he didn’t want anyone getting complacent.
Also like the way the two regions of the team (Boston and upper mid-west) come together in this scene. Two from each region, who earlier in the movie were at odds with one another are now standing together literally.
Also notice that it is Mark Johnson, son of Badger Bob Johnson (Wisconsin legendary coach) that steps up. Mark is also currently a very succesful coach if Wisconsin's womens team that has won multiple NCAA championships.
I have multiple championship trophies in baseball, basketball, and softball in my later years. My teams that won those trophies were never the most talented. We were the best team because of our love for one another as a TEAM. Everybody picked up everybody else no matter what. We never had stars on those teams. The whole team was the star.
@@svitloinpurgatory the quote was from the coach of the 1980 US Hockey team that defeated the USSR in the greatest upset in Olympic history. You probably weren’t born then. No worries.
I really think Coach Brooks put a lot of faith in Mark Johnson. He was the son of one of Brooks' closest coaching rivals, Badger Bob Johnson. From what I seen and read, it was Mark Johnson getting mad and breaking his stick that actually ended the "again" herbies after the game with Norway.
Herb felt the pressure. It made a bear out of him for that time frame. I might have had equal trouble keeping my composure during such troubles. Took God's Grace then. It still does today. Herb Brooks, RIP.
I think the most insane part about this is remembering back to where they started a little less than 6 months ago with Jack O'Callahan's cheap shot on Rob Mcclanahan. Not bad to go from 6 months to family and really mean it eh?
This actually happened that Herb brought in players late to try out for the team. The current players who had been with them from the start stood up together to say it's not fair to do this to this group. So Herb sent all the kids home he brought in late
Herb Brooks knew exactly what buttons to push. He even did it in the Olympics calling Rob McClanahan a pussy for having a hurt leg. The guy was a genius and it paid off.
I need more good hockey films in my collection. I have Slap Shot of course, and Miracle, and the Rocket. I don't know of many others. Goon ain't much about hockey so, pass. Ive almost wondered if he did that on purpose. Like picked that player out of the blue to see how the team would react. Either way, looks like he got the reaction he wanted.
They were already a few practices into the season. The boys already knew eachother and loved one another. They worked together well on the ice and they all knew eachother. They didnt want the new guy because it would mess with their chemistry and comradery. They refer to themselves as a family and they wanted it to stay that way
