      Andrew did you ever notice how young the Soviet D Corp was?
      Fetisov was 21, Starikov 21 and Kasatonov 19/20. Morrow and Baker were 2&3 years older than
      half the USSR D corp.
      Incidentally it was Starikov who lost the puck in his skates on
      Johnson's 2nd goal.
      The Soviets lacked any star of HOF players born 1955-57. In fact
      the USA produced better talent from players born 1955-57.
      55 - Mark Howe, Paul Holmgren
      and Mike O'Connell
      56 - Reed Larson - Tom Rowe (first 30 goal US scorer in 1978-79 in just 69 games), Mike Fidler.
      57 - Rod Langway, Gord Roberts, Joe Mullen and Mark Johnson.
      Steve Baker, best USA goalie prospect since Frank Brimsek.
      I would take the group of players
      born 55-57 in the USA over USSR, Czechoslovakia and Sweden. Only Canada's was better.
      Was by far best collection of US talent at that point.

    • @ryansmith1044
      @ryansmith1044 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, I'd say GGG _is_ trying to be this type of coach. Herb's line, "I'm not looking for the best players, I'm looking for the right ones" best describes Berhalter's philosophy. The problem is, Herb's system was specially designed to beat the Soviets, and he actually had the proper players to execute said system.
      On the other hand, Gregg's system isn't designed to beat anyone in particular, and is poorly executed because, while we have exceptionally talented players right now, these players aren't best suited to that system. There is so much talent in international soccer (or football, if you prefer) that you can't afford to play a system then pick your players to fit into it. You have to determine which system is best suited to fit your player pool, which is exactly the opposite of what Gregg is trying to do, and that's why we've called up Wil Trapp, Cristian Roldan, and Michael Bradley even though we have better players at those positions. It's why Christian Pulisic, our best player ever, was subbed off in a tie game for Paul Arriola.
      In conclusion, Herb Brooks' coaching philosophy, while it may have proved effective in hockey, does not translate to international soccer-more specifically, the USMNT-and why in order for us to succeed, we either need a change in philosophy or a change of head coach.

    When Argentina won the world cup last year it was because the head coach had adopted a mentality similar to Herb's here: up to that point the national Soccer teams had been put together out of the "best" players. Scaloni, on the other hand, was looking for the "right" ones.
    And then he turned them into a team, playing for a common goal and not individual merit.

    I was 14. Had just got done roller skating in Lakewood NJ when I found out we beat the Russians. It was on Sunday afternoon I believe. It was on a tape delay so the game wasn't on to the best of my recollection. I believe the Russian team destroyed the NHL All-Stars. Only team Russians didn't destroy up to then we're the Philadelphia Flyers Broad Street Bullies. Unfortunately Herb never got to see the film

    Wonder “what if” had the roles were swapped as Craig Patrick became a NHL coach and Herb Brooks became a NHL Executive?

    • @jamaljennings5734
      @jamaljennings5734 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m sure both would’ve been great if they had swapped but both had an knack, Brooks for being the great Coach he was (RIP) and Patrick being able to find talent that matched with the locker room whether that was in NY or Pittsburgh.

    He seen what he needed to build a team, that takes brain work, can't have all goal scorers, need playmakers, need a good number one d man who can move the puck but that's perfect, most of all you need a team to mesh ......

    This movie is a prime example that nothing is impossible. Everyone thought it was impossible for the USA team to beat the Soviets and win the gold medal

    • @chrisconley8583
      @chrisconley8583 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except they didn’t “beat the Soviets to win the gold medal”. They beat Finland. The Soviets were the game before.

    • @KMK7355
      @KMK7355 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Chris, there is nothing technically wrong with what he said. He didn't preclude the Gold being won later.
      If he said No one thought the US could beat the Soviets in The Gold Medal Game you would be right, he didn't though.

    What if the right players are the best ones? Imagine if Herb Brooks saw his players kneel during the anthem before a game, he’d be so angry he would skate those players after the game. Herb Brooks would never tolerate any disrespect to the American flag. And Herb is right, the front of the jersey is way more important than the name on the back.

    • @CatieCass
      @CatieCass 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh I think Herb would've done a lot more than just have them skate after the game if he saw them kneeling for the anthem. Knowing him, he'd probably send them all back to the locker room and not even let them play that game. There's a reason President Trump put a statue of Brooks in his National Garden of American Heroes.
