- Today we discuss the workhorse of any food plot program, the grains & greens. Cereal grains as well as green candy crops (peas & beans) are a big part of attraction and nutrition for whitetail deer. We talk about our products as well as how to plant and what to plant.

Great video John! Do you recommend splitting a smaller food plot (1/2-3/4 acre) in two and doing greens on one side and then grains on the other, and rotating every year? I’ve heard it’s good to rotate to avoid disease and fungus especially for brassica. SW Michigan. Thanks!

Add some red or crimson clover to the grains
I've haf good luck with the "field rye" (VNS Winter Rye) grown locally for the coop. Figured the misc corn, oats in it wiould wiinter kill anyway and no probs. The cllover seed (or maybe local radish), hiowever might have been a different balll game in retrospect, reason I added your clover blend along with my sweet feast order. Don't even get me started on coop local sourced switch grass!
like I said, their are some good trusted sources as well as some bad suppliers.

Great information John! Thank you for the great explanation and examples. We plant a lot of oats, rye, and wheat here in the South. One of the most planted cereal rye is the Elbon variety.
Another cereal rye that we have to special order is the Nelson variety. I don't know if Nelson will grow in your location, but if it can, the deer will walk through Elbon rye to get to the Nelson variety.
Your Green Forage blend has to be up there with the best Jon. 3 years in a row it’s been fantastic.

John, you’re about 8-10 days out from brassica. Same here but I’m splitting my plot. Should I seed the other area with fall forage at same time ? I’m using buckwheat as a cover crop so I’ll be rolling it over and don’t want to wait too long before the buckwheat goes to seed.

Tried the Fall Forage/Sandy Soil on my plots last Fall (Lake Superior area) and added a bit of radish. Deer hit the buckwheat, no question. Deer didn't seem to touch the oats but picked at the rye and the leaves of the radish. One big problem I had was with the sorghum in the soil builder I grew earlier on. I was told that disking would terminate everything, but the sorghum came back- and grew to 4-5'! I feared it blocked a lot of sunlight to radish, which barely grew to any height. pH is about 5.8-5.9 and OM was 5%+.
Very informative video! I planted my first food plots ever with your seed last year and couldn't have been happier with the results. Can you plant oats as a cover crop to fill in the open spaces or is rye the best option?
If it’s over seeding I would use rye.
Oats can work as a cover crop when planting clover
For me sunflowers are my #1 fall attraction crop when planted in August. I plant peas and rye every year and the deer don't touch it. Not sure whats going on there...
Great Video, I am surrounded by AG in southern michigan but in the woods. Thinking of trying the Green Forage Blend, can you add rye to it John to keep some regen going or just overseed late sept?
you could try 20 pounds of rye at planting
I ordered from them. Granted I'm down state Michigan but it was faster than I'd thought. Always great products.
What are your thoughts on Sorghum? Wondering if it could provide some late season value in snowier areas
We are using some Milo this year in plots to break them up
Enjoyed the video, very informative. I live in SC i don't own a tractor but my plan is cut the area as low as i can use a dethatcher get up all clippings which it will scratch the dirt a little throw out some 19-19-19, a little bit of turnips, red clover and a little bit of radishes. Then late September early October broadcast rye and or oats. I have very sandy rockie soil. Would you blend that may work better? Your cereal rye is it the hairless variety? Thanks. John, another great video! I have a bag of your seclusion 360 I am planning on putting in this fall hoping it will get a good start and take off next year. Can I use one of the mixes discussed in this video as an attraction for this fall or is it better to just use some oats as a cover crop? Thanks. Took your advise and lightly disced your buckwheat in this summer and the results compared to last year of just broadcasting on top of the soil are unbelievable in a good way!! Hi, live upstate NY. Just starting small plots, ag area so the deer dont hang out too much. Looking for what to put out for all year starting spring and something for them to hit hunting season which starts second week of November. Thank you

Green blend maybe. 25 pounds
Rye can be. 50 pounds
Re radish. I have been adding radish to my rye plots for years. My game cams show the deer selectively hitting the radish and ignoring the rest. I keep upping my rate yet I have not seen a radish make october yet. I cannot decide if this is a win or a fail.

I got 25 lbs of the fall forage, clover and some turnips from you for a 1/4 acre kill plot. So i plan on planting the 25 lbs of fall forage, 3 lbs of clover and 1 lb of turnips. Does that ratio sound right and how should i plant it? Clover/turnips together then the fall forage 2 weeks later? Western Kentucky
Nevermind. I think I just heard you say you can plant the fall forage, radishes and clover all at the same time. Did I hear that right or did i misunderstand.

Would you ever sow radish into white clover/chicory plot; especially this sad, dry year?
If the clover is canopied, there won't be enough sun getting to the ground.
If the clover is drought stressed/overbrowsed/mowed and there is a lot of bare soil, it will do as well as your site allows.
@@brushcrawler8612 Thanks. Clover/chicory will probably recover soon. I'll overseed a bit this late summer where thin. Thinking radish is just too big anyway.

I'm curious what type of peas you'd recommend for the SE. Right now, I've been using cowpeas, which works fine.
Cowpeas are a great choice

I'm ok with putting seed in the ground.. even tho I like no till better. How can we protect that top layer of soil and the organic matter?
A light discing to cover the seed is fine.

Any type of soil builder or green manure for plow down is a good start
Great info! I have decent rye thatch in my plot. Can i broadcast fall forage or the green forage blend into the thatch and cultipack before a rain? Or still prefer to bury it even with some thatch?
Rain will definitely dictate that.
The green blend should probably be buried if possible.
If it’s dry bury the fall forage, if it’s consistent rains and you can get the thatch on top of the seed it may be notilled.
If it’s hard clay, definitely bury it to help break up the surface crust.

There is a place for it.
But as bad as our soils are up here , any food plus OM building I can get from rye is a big plus.
But if wheat is a big draw in your area, by all means keep using it.
John, if you have buckwheat in a plot right know, do you recommend killing it off (rolling/spraying) and then coming back a week later and lightly discing the Fall Forage in so the seed is covered? I too have rolled the buckwheat over the seed with so-so results. Looking for the most reliable option. Thanks

John, I plan on planting rye the next 2 weekends if we get rain. The sorghum in the soil builder is only about a foot high. Would you recommend dragging with a harrow drag and/or using a cultipacker? I’m assuming the sorghum will not come back up or will it?

When you talk about a green plow down are you mowing a couple times and then spraying to terminate, then tilling in or do you literally have to turn it in green for all the benefits
The red clover is 6-10 inches tall
One pass with the tiller at 1” deep and it’s ready for brassica

Does cereal rye seed need to overwinter before it germinates? I cut off a bucketful of seed head and I was going to try and thresh it myself and broadcast it.
Rye germinates quickly. It needs to over winter to form the seed head.
