So I have a big question. I have a 5 acre food plot of clover. In the spring we use a "conventional" planter+sprayer combination to plant CORN and SOYBEANS. (so we keep the clover between the rows, but completely burndown/kill the clover where the corn and soybeans are planted)
***For the small amount of weeds that do germinate in the spring, what pre-emergent and post emergent herbicide would you advise(that wont affect the corn and soybean germination)?***
Thank you for your continued services. Top notch and always professional!!!
Hmmm
That’s a good one
They are both a grass and a broad leaf if you plant together.

We've always had good luck spraying Butyrac 200 and Clethodim 7-10 days before planting the corn and soybeans.
***Unfortunately, we learned that corn and soybeans MUST be planted no earlier than 7 days after spraying these two herbicides. For anyone else's benefit***
We haven't found a herbicide to spray after planting, of course (and I do not think such herbicide exists -as you said grass and broadleaf)
I have been using your seeds for last 3 years. Great seeds
Thanks !!
Thanks for providing us some great information John. I think I've made 1/2 of those mistakes.
We were all rookies once….
Just trying to get past mistakes and some bad advice contributing to the mistakes.
Thanks John!
You bet!
Best place and best price for quality seed. Best information, too. Thanks Northwoods !!!
Thanks Sam
Great video as usual John keep on keeping on! This is why I keep coming back and will continue using your seed which grows phenomenal in Vermont. Upfront advice, no secret recipes or BS.
Great to hear! Thanks
Yep
No BS here..
Thank you sir
Keep up the Great work!
I’ve been using Northwoods whitetail seed for he last 4 years. I’ve been impressed with everything that I have ordered. The oats are an awesome draw even in Ag land. I planted them 2 years ago and thought it was too early because they put on a seed head, but I watched the deer reach down to the ground, pull off an entire stalk and eat the whole thing!! For as long as you sell seed, I’m a customer!!
Thanks !!
Glad it’s working
Keep up the great work John love the videos and seed!!
Thanks!
Great information as always ! I always get good , honest information from you and great seed. My food plots are amazing and I have no idea what I'm doing but I follow your instructions and it works! thanks John.
Sounds great Mark , thanks
Great video and business plan. That's a great way to look at it and to actually do it like you have is really awesome. I'll be ordering more seed from you here before long!
We have done the same thing from day one.
It seems to be working quite well.
Thanks!!
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 This WHOLE video 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
I've been watching you for years John and you always give it straight.
And thank you also for not hoping in thr price gouge bandwagon. I will be buying my 12 + 1 acres of seeds only from Northwoods you for the quality and this! 👍
Proud to say we are not part of the insanity that the Food Plot Seed cartel has brought on to people.
Haters gonna hate John. We appreciate the no BS mentality. There’s plenty of that out there. 👊🏻
You bet…..
Quite a few folks making P.T. Barnum proud unfortunately.
And some haters really hating lol.
Good info.
Hey John, great video. I saw in a previous video that you do minimal tillage. I have been doing all no til (spraying/broadcasting). I have had great success with my good soil however I am trying to reduce my chemical usage and plan on buying a tiller for my tractor. What do you feel is an adequate tillage depth? I only plant cereal rye, crimson clover and brassicas. Also, how do you terminate your cereal rye? Thank you.
One inch
Thanks for the informative video. I’ve been buying seed from John for the last 3 years. Great guy to deal with and the seed he sells is quality. I was tired of seed not germinating and since I started buy from him I haven’t had a failure. I was actually in my plots today wishing it was spring to start some work on them.
Thanks Chad,
Love to hear that feedback!!
I just bought some Tecumseh switch from you! I'm am planting a few 6ft wide areas only about about 60 ft long. Would there be any reason I shouldn't apply peat moss over top to seed to help with germination? I'm worried about another dry summer in NW Mi in my very sandy soil.
That could smother seed
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 I have a specialized peat roller/spreader that plays down a thin stratified layer. I'm going to do a very small test spot for comparison.
I will always buy your seed and listen to your no nonsense information!
Thanks Jeff
Just bought 6 - 3lb bags of Sweet feast Brassicas from you! Had great results with the seed from you!
Thanks
Hope it does great!
I agree 💯 % with you. Best seed on the market with the best prices been using it for the past 5 years
Thanks!!
Don’t sell yourself short John. I find this entertaining. Thanks for the great info as always. Can’t wait for spring here in Wisconsin
Thanks
Yep bring on spring
Thanks John but IMO what should be added to the list is OVERSEEDING brassicas! With your guidance after 3 years of finally spreading them properly they grew up to my knees and turnips were bigger than softballs!
Appreciate you answering texts, etc. fantastic customer service!
Thanks for the input mark…
Maybe a part 2 video in the future
Great tips John. I was going to incorporate a kill plot into a shooting lane. The lane is 25’ wide. Now I’m rethinking that because of leave coverage in the fall. Is it worth putting some cereal rye in?
Sure as long as it fits your strategy
John - do you recommend planting annual clover or peas in the spring to fix nitrogen and then sweet feast brassica or rye grain in the fall? PH is OK and soil sample doesn’t say I am low on N. Just curious if that’s a recommended practice. SW Michigan. Thanks!!
Sure
If you don’t have something like a red clover growing from the fall before, a spring planting of oats, peas and an annual clover like berseem or crimson works great for a plow down.
Would you rather add an annual clover to the fall mix (I rotate portions of the plot with rye and brassica) or would you rather put it down (maybe with peas) in the spring to improve soil health? If so, which NW clover product would you recommend?
spring
great info John. I have been buying so much seed from you lately my wife thinks I'm a dealer.... lol. can't wait to get it all in the ground (RCBR, HD screen, clover/chicory)... getting ready to pull the trigger on pollinator and forbs and forage for the balance of my old field restoration plan.
Thank you Brian.
Really hope it works out!!
Hay John did you ever try the switch in your HD screen
I remember you said in one video you where going to try it
Yes
We added some RC Tecumseh to HD Screen and it seemed to do well. We will see what the switch looks like this June
Hey John, I sure appreciate all of the great information. I have a switchgrass question for you: I have an established switchgrass screen but I wanted to fill in some bare spots and also widen it some. I already broacasted/ frost seeded more switchgrass seed (Cave n Rock) into those areas. I removed most of the thatch last fall where new seed has been applied. Would it be ok to spray simazine on it before green up this spring? Will that hurt the established switchgrass if it makes contact?
You should be ok to spay as long as you keep the rate no more than 1.5 qts per acre
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 great, thank you
Please consider working with Jason from the Wisconsin Whitetail TH-cam channel.
He has been producing great foodplot test plot content for 6 years and might be able to offer you growing conditions (soil and pressure) you may not have at your disposal.
Both relatively small channels with valuable content. 🏆👍🌱
For sure
He’s got some great content .
Like to talk to him someday.
One thing I've learned is to stay away from liquid lime "alternative".
It works great for the county crews spraying it on the highway before a snowstorm.
I often wondered how a “liquid lime” is brown. But our Plot Dr. Liquid lime is white 🤷🏼♂️
Got kicked off food plot for Whitetail FB page for telling guys they WI clover was 32 percent annuals. Didn’t know the admin that I was talking to works for WI. Oh well
Welcome to the club……
I got the boot 2 years ago lol.
Apparently the truth makes them uneasy lol.
No-til comment from Kansas. It works adequately when conditions are good and moisture is available, with more rain on the way. BUT.....there is so little room for changes in conditions, (heat swing, dry spell, birds, etc). It's definitely a tool, not an all out solution.
Fully agree
It may work in one area but be a big failure somewhere else.
Thanks for the comment
WHS 50 lb of buckwheat $155.00 includes shipping! What a rip off!
Can’t understand that….
Very unfortunate that people are asked to pay that.
We do our best to get high quality seeds (no, not bin run seed like some are suggesting we are) at the lowest prices.
But that price over $100 is very unnecessary.
Great seeds thanks john @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
Doesn’t surprise me that WHS prices are outrageous don’t get sucked in by some smooth talking salesman that’s all he is disgusting 5:13
Sure doesn’t make much sense….
Very unfortunate
